AP - A charter airliner with 141 people aboard -- most of them French tourists -- crashed into the Red Sea shortly after takeoff early on Saturday from the resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, according to officials who feared no one had survived.

The Boeing 737 jet took off shortly before 5am local time (1400 AEDT) and quickly disappeared from radar about 11km south of the airport, said airport officials using customary anonymity. No distress call was made, according to officials at Egypt's Ministry of Civil Aviation.

The crash occurred amid a week of heightened concerns about terrorist threats from the air that have led to increased security and cancelled flights around the world.

But an initial statement from the aviation ministry ruled out terrorism, calling the crash an "accident" that may have been caused by a mechanical problem. The ministry said no one was believed to have survived.

Officials said 135 passengers were aboard the jet operated by the private Egyptian company Air Flash en route to Cairo -- 129 of them French and six Egyptians. There were six crew members aboard.

Rescue teams rushed to the scene and found the wreckage of the jet close to the coast. They were attempting to find survivors or bodies, according to an official quoted by the Egyptian news agency MENA.

Engineers from the national carrier Egyptair rushed in to try to help determine what happened. The Associated Press attempted to reach Air Flash for comment but its phone numbers in Cairo were busy.

The weather was clear in Sharm el-Sheikh and other flights were taking off without incident, officials said.

Sharm el-Sheik is a popular Red Sea tourist resort that also frequently hosts major political and economic summits. Egypt has held several meetings on peace in the Middle East there, including one in which US President George W Bush met with regional leaders in June over the "road map" plan toward creating a Palestinian state.

Local news media reported that vacationing British Prime Minister Tony Blair was to meet there later in the day with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

you've already given us this one a couple of months ago; try something new, you are becoming soooo predictable now.

Once again, from left to right;

Speer (architect), Hitler (failed painter), Brecker (sculptor) enjoying a very early morning drive around Paris. The one and only parisian visit for Hitler who was completely fascinated with Paris (especially the Opera) and who was desperate for Berlin to equal and eventually surpass it.

I dislike the Frenchies who refused to support the rest of the Allies. Dumb bastards would've been speaking German if it wasn't for us invading.

Tragic situation, nonetheless.

This is disgusting.

I must admit that this time it was morlicks "below girdle-line" remark to Budanski that startet it...but Bud promptly played the ball.

This is about more than 140 people, including children, who died in this crash. And that is damn sad.

It wasn't politicals comments, you said that you hates french, that a racist comment!
A politicals one should be : i hate french government!
Clear??
I always said i don't like Bush gang and his supporters, i never said i hate americans!

For the guy who spoke about OIF, we supported US for a just cause (OEF) but we can't support a war that give us more problem with terrorism and islamists integrists! Btw Rumsfeld was so arrogant and thinks that all allieds are his dogs that Chirac was right!

His name was Eric Vianet ,he, his wife and his 3 children was in the plane! I knew him as he worked in my company and i worked with him several months ago!
PT is a wellknow french basher, and a should have question about why he openned this tread on this military site, since it was a CIVILIAN ACCIDENT! Maybe the nationality of most of the victims is the cause!?
RIP yes because for me it's honest!

RIP to the victims.

But on another note, it will be interesting to follow the accident investigation that follows. It's worth mentioning that they're already swearing up and down that it was purely an accident, though they clearly have no way to know that yet.

Remember the farcical "investigation" the Egyptians performed on EgyptAir 990. They have no shame. Hopefully the French will have a hand in looking into this one & they'll certainly do a professional job of it.

The admiral said he had asked for a sub that can dive deeper. A sub that goes below 400 metres is not exactly standard issue to every ship in the Marine Nationale...the plane crashed on Sunday, give them a bit of time.

True enough... But what I'm noting is that there's already a clear difference between the Egyptians & the French. The French are doing a competent investigation & the Egyptians have already drawn their conclusions & have begun sweeping it under the rug....
