Utah Bill Would Ban Firing Squads
SALT LAKE CITY - Utah could ban firing squads and execute condemned prisoners only by lethal injection — but not on Sundays, Mondays or holidays — under bills submitted for the upcoming legislative session.
Utah is the only state that uses firing squads. Three current death row inmates have chosen to die by firing squad rather than injection.
State Sen. Ron Allen and state Rep. Sheryl Allen introduced the companion bills in the House and Senate aimed at abolishing the firing squad. The Allens are not related.
The Utah Sentencing Commission said in August it would support eliminating the firing squads. Commission members said firing-squad executions have become publicity magnets that tend to focus attention on death-row inmates instead of their victims.
"We're making a hero out of some idiot that's destroyed families," said Sevier County Sheriff Phil Barney, a member of the sentencing commission.
The state's last firing squad execution, in 1996, drew more than 150 television crews from around the world.
If enacted, the ban would mean inmates who already have chosen to die by firing squad could not avail themselves of that option.
"I don't think it's right that felons convicted of a capital felony should have a choice," Ron Allen said Friday. "Their victims had no choice."
The Utah Department of Corrections has taken no position on the firing squad bill, introduced in December for the session that begins Jan. 19, said spokesman Jack Ford. But the department requested another bill, sponsored by state Sen. John Valentine, that would prohibit executions on Sundays, Mondays or holidays.
That would allow the department to avoid paying overtime for officers preparing for the execution, Ford said.

I don't see what the problem is. If you ask me- I'd say lethal injection is too good for someone who's on death row. I mean, they swab your arm with alcohol before they inject the sedative. :cantbeli:
I would welcome back the days of the guillotin or the gallows. If a bunch of news crews show up- all the better. Make an example of the murdering bastard. :D

Lethal injection consists of at least two drugs. One, which acts first, is a parylising agent to prevent spasms, or in fact any movement at all. The second, which acts slower, kills the person in a few minutes. It would be very painful for those minutes and not at all a humane way of killing someone. The parylising drug just gives the impression they have 'fallen asleep' and died. Hardly 'too good' for anyone, I would think.
Why kill murderers? The average death row case lasts over 10 years, this can't be good for the family, preventing them from moving on. I say, convict them and then make them repay their debt by working for the community, making equipment or doing other manual labour. Don't have them sitting around watching sky, with new library books and studying for an open university degree like they do over here. But don't kill them. What's the point?

I also believe we should use criminals (not only murderers) as labor. Make them work until their hands bleed, until their nails fall off, until they have no energy. Make them do this each and everyday for the rest of their miserable life until they die. If they do not cooperate, whip them.
But guess what, that will never happen. Stupid hippies.

I agree because they arent human at all.[sarcasm]
I had an uncle who was in jail and it appauls me to think that you would actually wanna do that to criminals.
I would agree if you had narrowed it to down to criminals put in there for rape murder and molestation and all the works like that, but what about the ones who are in there for drug posession and ones who are wrongly accused? Would you really feel okay if they were getting that kind of ****ty treatment? Pull your head out of your ass brother, and stop posting bull**** for the sake of it.

Pull your head out of your ass, Drugs are illegal...
People need to grow up and take responsibility for their actions. If one breaks the law, there are no if, and's, or but's. If you don't like the laws, too bad...send a letter to your government officials.

I agree with what Evan said there. Hard labor is good for murders/rapists/etc., but is that really warranted for non-physical crimes?

If retardation was a crime you would have been in jail a long time ago. Think with your head not with your ass, no matter how much alike they may look.

i went to a catholic highschool, so i had to take religion classes. one was called death and dieing, in which we studied deathrow, and normal prision. it is cheaper to keep a lifer then it is to kill them. i say just throw them all in the same rat hole and see who survives.

Non physical crimes are still crimes.
I think that if you're in prison then you should be working to repay your debt to society. Not sitting around soaking up tax dollars. Even if it's just mowing the grass by the highway, have them do something. It doesn't have to be hard labor (although I would prefer that felons have to work very hard while in prison).
It is more of a deterrent to have to spend the rest of your life doing an honest days work, than it is to sit around, watch TV, lift weights, have *** and do drugs. Then 20 yrs later after two appeals get an injection and go to sleep.

That's basically what I meant. Labor is entirely appropriate for any criminal, but hard labor should be reserved for those who harm others.

I agree with having them work, i was just disagreeing with TFs version of "Make them work until their hands bleed, until their nails fall off, until they have no energy. Make them do this each and everyday for the rest of their miserable life until they die. If they do not cooperate, whip them." If i may quote him.

I with everyone else here who reckons criminals should be made to work. If you put someone to death and they wrent guilty then thats not really going to help. If someone spends 20 years working hard labour or something and then is found out to be innocent then yeah, they'll be pissed off but at least they are still alive.
On another point, what do you do when the lifers get too old to work or too ill or what not?

My suggestion was not that they should be worked to death on starvation rations!
Maybe those of you who think so should seek employment from Stalin, Hitler or the Imperial Japanese army.
I had a relative who was worked to near death on the Burma railroad and I wouldn't wish that on anyone. Thoughts of vengence are fine for the short term, but what sort of sicko is going to watch over these people as a prison guard whilst they die of exhaustion?
The idea of all criminals working at a sustainable rate, on sufficient rations, to improve society is what I was on about. Those who are less of a risk could be given lighter, community jobs such as cleaning up streets and graffiti and all the **** they threw over the railway line. maybe then they would get some respect for the hard work of other people.
