Note the old WW II vintage .45 M3 "grease gun" used by Delta before the MP5.

"Gentelemen, you have been selected... not because you are the meanest sons-of-a-bitches in the valley, nor was it for showin' off what a tough guy you are to the gang back on the block... not because you have muscles in your do-do, and not because you have the potential to become some sort of cold-blooded killer who would just as soon blow the eyes out of a baby as step on a bug.

"Your units selected each of you... because you are good Marines - men who are well disciplined... courageous...duty-bound...and loyal to your country and you Corps... in top physical condition, mentally sound and very patient. Each man here... has good moral character and a strong sense of values, among which he holds life sacred.

"When you go on a mission, there is no crowd to applaud you - no one for whom you can flex your muscles or show how tough you are... You have to be strong enough to physically endure lying in the weeds day after day, letting the bugs crawl over you and bite you, letting the sun cook you and the rain boil you, ****ting and pissing in your pants... because you know that Charlie's coming, and you're gonna kill him."

Not wanting to follow the trend of itemizing and correcting every weapon and component in a pic, I do suspect the SMG is actually an old Walther. Obviously not the best pic as far as detail, but the vintage M3 has a rather ****ounced long barrel (Walther pic here - http://world.guns.ru/smg/smg39-e.htm).

The DF photo is also on the cover of a great soft cover book, "Delta: America's Elite Counterterrorist Force (The Power Series)". I'd strongly recommend this for anyone interested in the early, developmental history of Delta - excellent photos of early weapons, kit and CQB tactics.

Of course Colonel Beckwith's own narrative is a must-read. No question.

And the recent title "Inside Delta Force" by Eric Haney, gives fast-paced history on Delta's very first selection process, some real-world '80s missions in Central America, advanced sniper surveillance techniques and detailed CQB room-entry procedures. Very factual, very real, also very poignant as many ops' anecdotes end with a tribute to fallen teammates.

Dennis, that quote is awesome! Thank you for sharing. The first paragraph highlights the psychology required to not only excel as an unconventional warrior, but to even consider candidacy - well done!

The Power Series book on Delta has been raked over the coals a number of times citing the staging of the pics, accuracy, etc.

I have this book and I think it is one of the worst as far as getting any real info on Delta. The majority of the pictures are horrible and staged.
Just my two cents.

The book I read says it was a WW2 greasegun.

The SMG is a Walther MPK or MPL- I think it's an MPK. CAG used Walthers in the early days including Eagle Claw/Ricebowl. There's an image of a coupla operators on-site with one carrying an MPK.

That Delta book made me cringe- a mate had a copy and one of the images credited as two CAG operators preparing for an explosive entry is actually a still from the film 'Who Dares Wins'. Made old Chops laugh anyway.

I have Inside Delta Force by Eric Haney and it is an awesome book. I think the rarest picture you will ever see is in this book and it is of a Delta operator baking bread

Seriously though it is an awesome book and I recommend to all. I never have read the Power Series book but I will take your word on it guys.

In the picture gallery I believe there are two faces blurred out. I bet the two are Brig. Gen. Grange who is now an analyst on CNN and the other Major General Boykin. Grange just retired after almost thirty years and Boykin is still in after well over twenty. I'm on this site way too much

I dont have the book but I read it when it came out. The picture where the entire 2 squadrons are posing in black with weapons out. The snipers I believe are in the front two rows and the short shooters in the back three.

I dunno guys, to be honest, the weapon looks nothing like a Walther or M3. All the MPK/MPL's I've seen have had wire stocks, where this one appears to have a solid one.

[edit] http://world.guns.ru/smg/walther_mpl_r.jpg

As seen there, the Walther doesn't look much like the weapon in the pic, folded stock or not. Notice how near the end of the weapon in the picture, the stock/reciever seems to consist of three destinct circular shapes, where as the Walther is a rather thin and flat bodied piece.

I've a hard time making out the gun so here's a wild guess: Swedish K? The Seals and CIA used them in SE Asia, right?
