I was wondering if I could use a Commercial Vest in the Army? Like a Warhead Industries or a Blackhawk vest?
Thanks Guys!

It all depends on your unit SOP

Worry more about getting into the military instead of what gear you can and cannot wear. Once you get to your unit after you've finished all your training, then you can start worrying about that.

This is one of those things that always cracks me up. New privates in the military go out and buy all the 'cool guy ****' (thats what my DS called it ;-)) and then when they get to their unit they find out that the stuff they spent so much on is worthless. Why would you want to wear something of your own anyways? Unless you are being deployed use the military's gear. That way if you rip it up during training you don't have to pay out of pocket to get it fixed/replaced.

well, the Army uses a hell of a lot of stuff.....
marines use interceptors, SDS, FSBEs for FAST. FLCs in the MEU, and FAST may also use almost any gear they want, most prefer the FSBE, and SDS, but some use BHI, Eagle, DBT, blackwater, among others.
Navy SF use what they want to get the job done. Chest rigs, suck as the hellcat are popular as well.
Air force doesnt use ****....(jk dont hurt me....)

I think he meant "Chest rigs, such as the hellcat are popular as well."
But maybe I'm wrong.

It all depends on his 1st Sergeant, and whether or not he's cool or a ****! If you want to buy your dad something he can use, you might want to write to him and ask him his opinion. It would be a waste to spend a ****load of cash on something he can't wear. If you get him something that's high-quality, there's a better chance they'll let him wear it.
Does your dad have a decent field knife? That might make a good gift, if you are allowed to send that sort of thing. I would think it should be okay.

Hmmm, could be dodgy as to whether your old man can use the vest. It all depends on the rules and regs in his unit.
But as he is american, I doubt he will really need any more 'green kit'! :)
(his issue gear ought to be good enough, plus he might be picky about what he wants to use)
Your best bet is to get him something that will make his life easier/more comfortable wherever he is and also remind him of his family. I don't know what the most popular items are, cos I don't know where he is and I'm not there. Try asking around people you know (other service families?) or on here as to what the guys are after out there. Or, if you don't mind it not being a surprise, then ask your dadwhat he would like.
I'm sure a non-green item that will bring a little 'home comfort' would be greatly appreciated by him.

Hadfield, is your dad in an infantry or combat arms MOS? It makes no difference regarding the value of his service, but perhaps a fancy vest isn't really what he needs. But still, it might not be a bad idea. I wish we'd had better load-bearing equipment when I was in!

something simple like a really good thermos flask might make his life more comfortable than a vest. The sorta thing that keeps him comfy and aware of his folks every time he uses it at 3 am in the freezing cold. just my 2c

in my bn, we wear whatever the heck we want, at least while we're over here. during training we mostly wear the issue FLC. a LOT of people wear stuff from tactical tailor...not cuz its any better, the factory just happens to be right outside of ft lewis is all. Really does depend on your unit. BSB in my bde has to wear the issue gear...not like it matters when you never leave the FOB anyway

So if you move around between infantry units you might want to get whatever the local company is to blend in with everyone else?
Tactical Tailor = Ft. Lewis
SpecOps Brand = Ft. Hood
US Cav = Ft. Knox
Lightfighter = Ft. Bragg + Ft Campbell
Hehehe could get complicated . . .

I think it is an interesting reflection upon American Society than even our military finds it necessary to be 'fashionable'. Are we that obsessed with materialism and consumerism? Just a thought. :|

Just save your money, and wait to see what the guys in your unit are doing... I promice your Team Leader, and Squad Leader will square you away. When I was in the Army, we had to make do with the ALICE sytem they gave us. We could wear all of the stuff that's out there. But I didn't spend a year in a war zone... I've seen lots of pics of guys wearing lots of commercial kit... great! But before you spend your bucks make sure you can use it.. I don't care how many years you played Army, or played airsoft. Spending a couple of hours wearing a piece of kit, and carrying 2 mags of plactic BBs isn't the same as carrying a basic load of 5.56 along with all of the other **** you are required to carry ,depending on your unit's SOP, for a 5 day exercise or 1 year of patrolling in a war zone. So getting back to what I've already said. Wait! You will be surprized when you get there. And if you can have some of that kool stuff, then get something your buddy would also like to have, that way if you bite it.. he gets a good peice of used kit....

Well then he should think twice before he joins up... the reallity of the situation today, is that if you join the Army you will have a 99% chance of going to war during your time in... He's thinking about the wrong stuff... What color your unifrom will be, what kool kit you'lll be wearing, if you can wear these boots instead of those boots... are all comments and questions I've read on this forum from guys who were thinking about joining... the real questions should be, what MOS I should sign up for, what can I do to get ready before I go... People have these ideas of glory about joining the military... when they don't realize that glory comes from hard work, lots of hard training, and in war the loss of freinds and sometimes oneself... although SFC Smith the winner of the CMoH has left this world and his name lives on in glory... his family has lost a father and husband... Hollywood has dramatized war... and the only drama in war, is when your holding a Compression Bandage to your buddy, and watching the life leave his eyes.... The rest is a reality that takes a lot of work to arrive at... it's not like playing war... when it gets dark, or your hungry or better yet when your mother calls you in because it's late that the fighting ends... it never ends... and being tired is how you feel before you get to the LOD.... then the next level begins..... I'm not on this site to lie to people.. nor am I here to BS people... I'll tell you the facts straight.. you don't like what I have to say, then kick me off.. or don't read my posts... I don't give a fvck one way or the other... but I'm damn sure not going to white wash reality to make someone feel better...

Maybe just ask your father some things that he needs/wants, would be a better idea? Im not putting yours down, Im just saying this is maybe what I would do. Maybe you want it to be a suprise, but sometiems its nice giving a person what they REALLY need/want :D
