View Full Version : Just saw War of the Worlds. NOw what do y'all think!!

I just watched War of the Worlds, thought it was pretty good. I had thought Tom Cruise wasn't gonna do a very good job but it was alright. I really enjoyed the return to the original strider format of the invaders. The 1950s saucers just weren't as cool. And certainly not as Ginormous. Anyways the movie got me thinking about what I would do in the event of extra terrestrial invasion. Me I'd go down to the local armouries(since I work there), get as much ammo and food as I could for the GPMG and some rifles and pistols for personal protection and get the hell outta the city(with a select few). Then go about occupying a mine shaft or the deifenbunker from the Cold war. How bout you all? WHat would you do?

But on a serious note how many people here think our armies and governments of today should be focused more on the hypothetical defence of the planet against an unknown more advanced (assuming) threat. Rather than just focusing on how much dirt they can grab and pushing each other around.

I for one think it's pretty likely that there are other civilizations out there and that they are something we should be warry of. Regan certainly did. Except North Korea, those mothers can go straight to ummm. substitude a word.

HEY hey hey don't be bashing a classic they've been telling this story since 1898. This War of the Worlds follows the original story very well. The aliens invade, we are brought to our knees and then the aliens are killed off by Earth viruses or bacteria. The moral of the story is because of the billions of humans who have died from disease over the years our race has sorta earned the right in evolutionary terms to live here, they hadn't.

H.G. Wells was a great writer for his time with a huge immagination. He seemed to write about things happening before they ever happened.

Can i have the SMAW? Plz.

But really if there was an invasion, i would search my neighbors' houses for a weapon. If i don't find one i would make myself a little molotov cocktail and head for the gun store about 3-5 miles away. Once i get a gun, i'll search for other people. If i can't find anyone, then i'll just head for the nearest military base.

it seems that some bacteria or something like that caused their downfall. They plan an ivasion a million years in advance and get defeated because of some bacteria.

I dont belive it is currently being used, but the .50 HMG is supposed to come back as an Interim weapon until a new weapon system is fielded.

The only place Ive seen it (On TV of course) is on the HMCS Winnipeg. Right now most of our jeeps only have the C6

Awesome movie that was worth the money. It wasn't the shooter-rama like Independence Day, but a bit more 'realistic'. I also like how it doesn't take an hour for the aliens to come, but it gives you enough time to get to know the family a bit. My only complaint is

***SPOILER***His son surviving, but I guess you need a happy ending.***SPOILER***

*don't read if you havn't seen it*

it was cool because, as opposed to other alien movies, this was from the point of view of the people, as opposed to the government trying to save the world.

just saw it, wow, i was getting ready to walk out b/c some many ****ing people were just getting killed, and there was no solution, it was 2 hours of running away until *magic*, the pen is mightier than the sword.

I'd find meself the biggest badest lethal thing out there, even if it was an escavator or something stupid like that!

I think it was called the Horn Of Ulla or something. This movie was intense! We always sit at the front row and the side speakers are broken in this **** theatre so they jacked up the volume from the front speakers.

Anyways I wouldnt stand and fight and get slaughtered, I would grab my gear and food and head for the mountains with some people that I trust.
No little kids to get you killed ;)

Pretty funny this subject came up cause my friends and I had the same discussion, one of my friends said he would goto his uncles house who lives in a small town and hide in his basement...I was like "Did you just watch the same movie as I did?" And when I told him about going to the mountains, his reply was "Why would you goto the mountains and be in the middle of nowhere".......well fvcking no ****! SO you dont die!

Oh and nice to see they used real marines and soldiers.

And btw http://www.militaryphotos.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=52636 p-)

I dunno who here said it was some kinda scientology commercial but this movie, the story is older than scientology. It was written in 1898 and this movie follows the original storyline better than the 1950s-60s version. It was a good movie and they did a good job adapting it from being set in England to being in America.

Ok lexi just for you we'll make a short stop at the naval armouries and see if they have a 50 cal. If not We'll get you another C6 and a P225.

I say we all drive to the deifen bunker and hide out there.

It was a pretty good movie. Could tell right off it was Spielberg; he did that "a cell turns into a raindrop turns into the stars turns into the sun turns into a streetlight" thing. For some reason I love his transitions. but anyways, this is a great example of a hugely hyped up movie, when after seeing it you're like - "oh. ok. that was cool." I don't think I've heard one person say "oh man, I loved it, it was awesome."

Cruise is great, like always; apart from his media persona, and all of the other crap that's going on, he is a fabulous actor and I think he really metamorphoses into his character. The bad father cliché was good in this movie, it turned out to be not so cliché because he really was an ass. great acting (I love Dakota Fanning) and somewhat predictable but not completely, aaand good action. Not tons of dialogue, but a lot of emotion.

Many people may not like the ending, but at least it stayed with the book (so i've heard...I'm gonna read the book very soon). Iff it had a huge end-of-the-world scene, people would have complained it didn't stay with the book; and since they DID stick to it, people complain about it crapping out. Not gonna please everyone.

Good movie though, I enjoyed it :)

All I can say is I loved it! I've read the book, heard the 1938 radio broadcast, watched the 1953 Movie, and even saw the crapped out War of the Worlds 1980 TV series. Say what you like but this story pwns every Alien invasion story because it was the original and oldest story about this concept (1898). H.G.Wells wrote something completely new and ahead of its time and that's why no matter what Tom Cruise or Speilburg did or didn't do makes no difference to me. The movie was visually well done and I just LOVE this story.

Also the return to the original concept of the novel was a good idea. Every movie of this type you see has to revolve around the US Government (or the Japanese) or a buncha rag tag rebels trying to save humanity from the alien invasion. And somehow (computer virus, harrier jumpjets?, nukes) the humans prevail. With this all our best weapons, and tactics and ideas fail and we are saved by something as simple as a virus. When you consider when this was written and that if a person of the day believed there were little tiny critters living in their water or on desks or in the body they were considered CRAZEE. So I just find it and incredibly original peice of work.

Good movie though, I enjoyed it :)I just saw it last night. The movie had me riveted, wondering how it would be resolved. The ending was anti-climactic. Some people booed. I'm sure that H.G. Wells did a better job making the ending have more emotional significance. Speilberg seemed to lose interest in the film toward the end and wanted to quickly tie up loose ends. The word 'perfunctory' comes to mind. Opportunities were lost in making how the aliens were defeated more dramatic. There could have been a few hints or even showing people noticing the aliens becoming sick and racing to find and deploy the proper infectious agent before the bad guys found out.

Having a main character who didn't have a chance of surviving just pop onto the screen completely unharmed in the last 5 minutes -- w/no explanation -- was weak. How the grandparents' entire block in a major metro area suffered little damage when the main characters had to dodge several deep scans in a rural farmhouse strained credulity. It was almost as if it were a pre-ordained safe-haven.

The movie has potential and could stand to be re-cut by Ridley Scott or John Carpenter.

I havent seen it yet, but I like the way the book and original movie ends . For people not to know how it ends before seeing it kinda reminds me off people who didn't know that the Titanic sunk before they saw the major motion picture. From what I have read of this new one Ill probably be disapointed in it.

I know that The Thunderchild isnt in the new one, which for me was the best part of the story. Im also upset because in the book and even a little in the old movie the suspense is built up, with the martians hammering and building their machines after they land on earth, which I understand in the new one the machines are buried under the surface, kinda lame to me.

Actually, this brings up a point I wanted to mention in my WotW preview post, but forgot to do so.

I've heard complaints about Dakota's line, "Is it terrorists?" Many thought it was stupid and unnecessary. I can understand where they're coming from, but in my opinion, it added realism. The changes Spielberg made to the movie make it more modern; we are able to relate to it more. And whether you like it or not, we do live in a world now that is obsessed with terrorism. It seems only natural that a young child would ask their parent if terrorists were attacking. They were right next to New York, there was mayhem, etc...I seriously doubt the first thing that would pop in most peoples' minds would be "Omg aliens are attacking us!!"

Personally, I thought it was a flop. The story was poor, there were a lot of glaring continuty errors, and the ending stunk. Never before have I hated a character in a movie as much as that little girl. Why didn't Tom Cruise ever gag her?

All I'll say about the ending is Speilburg messed around with it enough. In the novel the main character wanders into London after the long trip through the English contryside and the first thing he notices is the red vine is dying. And then comes upon dying Tripods and witnesses an alien trying to emerge from its ship. END.

In this version the military just HAD to get its licks in. Firing the Javelines and Gustavs at it for purely a revenge factor. The things would've died whether those troops fired on em or not. As the narator said "they were doomed the instant they breathed our air, ate and drank."

to explain the concept any more would have made the movie a lot like the original blade runner, "dumbed down so much it would be painful to watch". How much more explaining can there be? And one of the nice touches Speilburg did was add this uncertainty into the film. It makes it more like reality. When in reality do we ever get all the facts presented to us and when do things end with a dramatic end battle in reality? The ending was supposed to be more like a storm dying down or passing over. Not some kinda macho, human vs alien showdown like independence day.

If you watch the 1953 version of the film it REALLY gets annoying because the main character is a government scientist and always has the answers about the martians. It gets drab and slow with the depth they go to explain things that you forget the world in under attack.

At least with this one its one thing to another fast, keep running or your dead kinda action.

Saw it right now, great movie, but it could be a lot better. The Title is 'WAR of the Worlds' not 'We run away from the fvcking Alienbastards!' - A little bit more Action would be great, see the Army and Marines (watch out for the MARPAT-Camo) fight these bastards!

But over all a good movie with good performance of Tom Cruise and the other actors, fantastic Effects and great sound!

Some -- like the ones directed by Ed Wood -- are so bad that they're extremely watchable for the unintentional comedy factor. BTW I recommend the movie made about Ed Wood (http://www.militaryphotos.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=47323) starring Johhny Depp and Martin Landau.

I agree with most of the ones picked by Roger Ebert (http://www.militaryphotos.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=47323) as bad [and his flaming reviews are hilarious]. But I did like I Heart Huckabees.
