WASHINGTON -
Sandra Day O'Connor, the first woman on the Supreme Court and a swing vote on abortion as well as other contentious issues, announced her retirement Friday. A bruising Senate confirmation struggle loomed as
President Bush pledged to name a successor quickly.

"It has been a great privilege indeed to have served as a member of the court for 24 terms," the 75-year-old justice wrote Bush in a one-paragraph resignation letter. "I will leave it with enormous respect for the integrity of the court and its role under our constitutional structure."

Little more than an hour later, Bush praised O'Connor as "a discerning and conscientious judge and a public servant of complete integrity." He said he would recommend a replacement who will "faithfully interpret" the laws.

O'Connor's announcement marked the first retirement in 11 years on an aging court. It came as a modest surprise, particularly since Chief Justice
William Rehnquist has been the subject of retirement rumors for months. Rehnquist, 80 and ailing with thyroid cancer, has offered no hint as to his future plans.

O'Connor's decision capped a pioneer's career. President Reagan broke nearly 200 years of tradition when he tapped her — a top-ranked graduate of Stanford law school — for the high court.

Over time, she evolved into a moderate conservative, but more importantly, a majority maker.

She voted with a 5-4 majority, for example, on the case that effectively awarded the disputed 2000 presidential election to Bush.

Oh boy! Now the political jockying begins.

Am I the only person on earth that is abit skeptical about this particular saying? I do not disagree with it however - I do not agree with it either.

If we waited two hours, and then refreshed the thread, I bet this will be overrun with pro- /anti- Bush trolls just frothing at the mouth. Can't wait til the Senate BS starts going down. This is gonna be ****in hilarious...

I hope Rehnquist drops out soon too just so I can see the panic ensue. Somehow I picture a shark feeding frenzy about to begin or more like people running around on fire screaming the sky is falling, it’s the end of the world, we’re doomed.
You know its bad when I find my own government and media more fun to laugh at than the crap from Hollywood.

Already reaching for the popcorn and beer, awaiting the circus…

Dewine will get support from the left, he co-sponsored the renawal of the AWB, plus I think he is from my(adopted) neck of the woods.

DeWine is fairly respected, but I do not see him as a solid choice for the highest court of the U.S..

On a personal level, I have no problem with him. I LOATH is son, who was our commissioner down here before I moved to Kentucky. What a loser. "Republican Family Values" as defined by him is sleeping with an aid, getting her pregnant while married with kids of your own.

The father should kick him to curb rather than support his son's election to the State House....but noooooo...

Big question of poor judgement there and good old boy mentality.

Now, 5th Circuit Appeals Court Justice Ed Prado, would be a solid choice I think. Fairly moderate. I think we should replace a Moderate Conservative Judge with another. He made it through the Senate by an almost unanimous vote...so he would have consensus.

He was original sent up for vote by Reagan, and later sent to the 5th by Bush and got him through on something like a 96 to 0 vote...

I say this because the court, 9 times out of 10 rules much in the way American opinion flows. It works. We, as a nation should be concerned, regardless of beliefs or political affiliation should demand a balanced court that uses their minds rather than political ideologue in judgement.

The court is supposed to be apolitical. They are supposed to balance the other two branches of government and be representative of American society and to uphold the Constitution of the United States of America in their ruling.

She stood up against the property seizure hearing last week and I will miss her when she is gone. She will be missed and she will be hard to replace.
