V-94. New version is called OSV-96 I think, and has a muzzle brake more like the McMillan Tac-50.

Another 12.7mm rifle used more by GRU Spetsnaz (according to 16 OBr SpN) is the bullpup KSVK.

2.) AKMS retrofitted with the stock from a AK-74?

I don't get it? What's the purpose of the smoke? I mean, if you hide behind it, that's one thing (except that you can't see either) - if you stick your head & rifle out the front...you're not hidden.
I suppose it makes your clothes smell april fresh too...

Prism is probably the wrong word - I guess it's a 'split' mirror that reflects the image for the instructor, but also lets the shooter still see through:

Thanks! Never heard or read anything about that before. That is really a interesting approach to learning the basics of markmanship, we never had anything like that, only a old respected-for-his-shooting-skills officer that told us to breeaaaath, and to pull the trigger to 50-60% (the swedish AK5īs trigger requires quite a lot pressure), hold our breath, and then squeeze of the rest and let the butt of the weapon sink into our shoulder. He almost made it sound a bit erotic, but it worked great atleast for me.

But Iīm sure that a prism like that would help for those that had problems getting tight groups despite his excellent descriptions.

Here is the link that explains Russian special services system, it is in russian but you can put it in translator if you care.

http://www.agentura.ru

To put it simply- everyone in Russia has their own version of special forces: army, navy, VDV, MVD, customs, judicial ministry, etc. Most of those are rather unknown ans have their unique tasks and responsibilities, although sometimes work out of their "major". For some reason, lack of knowledge I guess, in the West they are all put in the same category and referred to as "specnaz", that is wrong. For example, Judicial ministry specnaz has nothing in common with VDV specnaz, specnaz SVR* is "somewhat" different from specnaz MVD and so on....

*SVR (sluzhba vneshnej razvedki) External/Froreign intelligence service
It does have its own spec ops unit but very little/nothing is known about it. Supposively it started with "Zenith" and "Kaskad" units (Amin's palace). The rumor is that the name is "Zaslon" and one of its missions is extraction/evacuation/retrieval of russian citizens and property from foreign countries. I have read an article where "Zaslon" was mentioned in connection with the retrieval of Iraq's state archives when US entered Bagdad.

PSS "VUL"

Russian Texan
01-08-2004, 08:26 PM
PSS "VUL"
It was developed back in 1983. Silencing and no flash is achieved through the use of special ammo "SP 4". "VUL" is capable of piercing steel helmet from 20 meters. It is produced in limited quantities for the special services use.
Double action and probably one of the flatest handguns in the world.

The special-subdivisions of the Ukraine
after 1991 only of six brigades of special-NAZ GRU remained in the independent republics, moreover four (three land and one sea) were reached to the Ukraine. Land brigades were dislocated in the Crimea (this brigade it was more lately converted into 1-1 paraborne regiment VS of the Ukraine), Kirovograd and Izyaslavle. In the beginning of 1992 the commanders of these brigades made demand in the administration of special reconnaissance GRU RF about the fact that them they require to swear to the Ukraine, on what there they answered, that the adoption of new oath does not contradict old. The Ukrainization of brigades passed as accelerated tempos - for example, assistant commander izyaslavskoy the brigades of Lieutenant Colonel Yaroslav goroshko of new officers arrived in the part asked into the forehead: "with moskalyami war you will be?".
10-4 brigades Of spN were converted in 10-1 AMP. 9-4 brigades Of spN were converted into the training center Of spN and slowly it dies, on the motion losing most important capital - people. In Kiev, quite near the so-called main administration of reconnaissance (KIESELGUHR) GSH, still there is created Ya.P.Goroshko the individual officer detachment Of spN.
Separate role was reached 17 to brigade special-NAZ of Black Sea fleet. After leading to the Ukrainian oath, and in its 1995 they planned to use against the Russian ships during the Sevastopol conflict.

It transported to the Ukraine, also, with special-NAZ of state security. The Ukrainian version of the group of "alpha" was created entire in the year prior to decomposition SSSSR, 3 March of 1990. During this day by the order đ of 0031 was created with 10- e the department of group "A" 7- GO of control THE KGB OF THE USSR. In 1991 on the base of group with the same tasks was created the subdivision "s", which was located already in the structure of the service of the national security of the Ukraine. But on 23 June, 1994, the edict of the President of the Ukraine created control of "A" of the service of safety of the Ukraine. Today complete name "alpha" - main administration SBU for fight with the terrorism, protection of participants in the criminal legal procedure and colleagues of pravookhranitel'nykh organs.

At present main administration of "A" OF SBU leads Major General Aleksandr birsan. Nothing it is known on the exploits of Ukrainian al'fovtsev in the fight with the terrorists, but widely was illuminated the role of this subdivision in the seizure of bandgrupp and the like furthermore, until now one of the most important tasks in the history of group considers the protection and tracking of sea transport the load of the new currency of the Ukraine, printed in France, Italy and to Canada.
Structurally control of "A" enters into the composition of anti-terrorist center (ATTS), and Birsan is the assistant of the leader OF ATTS. center was created with the edict of the President of the Ukraine on 11 December, 1998. It consists of interdepartmental coordination commission, into which enter the first assistants of the leaders of all power departments and operating unit - staff. Heads ATTS the first assistant of the chairman OF SBU colonel general Yuri Zeml4nskiy.

When still there was a national guard of the Ukraine (NGU), in the Crimea were dislocated 7-4 divisions NGU, into composition of which entered 21-4 brigades, with the mountain battalion Of spN "LAVENDER" even 10-1 regiment Of spN NGU "COBRA". After the "reformation" OF NGU they were reached BY MVD. As a result today the Ukraine has available two battalions of mountain-rifle special-NAZ - "cobra" and "lavender", which enter into the composition of internal troops MVD of the Ukraine and are dislocated in the Crimea - in Simferopol' and Balaklave. 24-1 the separate battalion "special-NAZ" OF NGU "PANTHER", which entered into the composition of Kiev brigade NGU, was also "mastered" BY MVD, while entire remaining brigade became presidential regiment. Furthermore, in the internal troops there are regiments of special-NAZ "jaguar" (Vinnitsa) and "Gephard" (Zaporozh'ye). Separately MVD of the Ukraine are also subordinated the detachments of special-NAZ "falcon" and "Berkut".V of '-oy division NGU (former 95-4 guard Sivashskaya TD) on the base ORB was formed the regiment Of spN, which now enters into internal troops MVD of the Ukraine.

Marmot1, the PSS pistol is the smallest silenced automatic pistol known. It uses special ammo that does not require a silencer. (There are smaller weapons that are silenced... like derenger type pistols using the same ammo.)

To understand how it works think of the cylinder of an engine with a piston and piston rod. In a car engine it is a petrol (gasoline) air mixture that explodes... blowing the piston up to turn the crank shaft to turn the wheels. In this bullet a normal primer and propellent charge blow the piston down the body of the bullet case till it is stopped by the shoulder of that case. The piston rod is pressed up against the bullet, which is a solid cylinder usually with a slight hollow at the nose. The gas from the explosion is is held inside the case so there is no flash or smoke. The Magazine holds 6 rounds of ammo and those shown in the picture appear to be live (it is hard to tell because the projectile is internal like with a nagant M1895 revolver).

PermskiiOMON

Thanks to you and undo and 16 and others for the excellent images. I have been collecting them and putting them on my hard drive... is that OK?

I have just gotten a Russian book about Afghanistan... called "War of the Scouts". It states that the RPKS-74 was unpopular due to its "Lack of firepower". (all of the text in the book is in Russian... but there are lots of nice photos and short abbreviated captions in English under the much longer Russian captions).

Was this due to the way it was used, or due to the ranges it was being used at do you think? (These are open questions for anyones opinion.)

(Note without having fired one... I have always quite liked the RPK series weapons. While testing AP ammo I have read of a test at 300m range where disregarding one flyer the group was 18mm across...)

GazB: I would say that guns with 5,45 ammo were unpopular in Afghanistan, and still not quite popular in Chechnya.

In a firefight at a distance of 200-400 meters it didn't really matter. Most important thing was the weight of the gun, because we were mostly moving on considerable distances towards our mssion objective.
I personally had my AKM with RPK magazines (2 X 45). More ammo, more comfortable, lighter, and gives you better aimed fire.
For firepower we had AGS, DShK, PK, etc.
