anyone recall the valerie plame leak? where a reporter got word from a senior white house official about the identity of a CIA operative and wrote it in a story? the FBI's special investigator has been at work on the case for some months now. he's gotten cooperation from the courts to gain the reporter's notes and TIME magazine has agreed to hand them over.

and now this..

MSNBC Analyst Says Cooper Documents Reveal Karl Rove as Source in Plame Case

NEW YORK Now that Time Inc. has turned over documents to federal court, presumably revealing who its reporter, Matt Cooper, identified as his source in the Valerie Plame/CIA case, speculation runs rampant on the name of that source, and what might happen to him or her. Friday night, on the syndicated McLaughlin Group political talk show, Lawrence O'Donnell, senior MSNBC political analyst, claimed to know that name--and it is, according to him, top White House mastermind Karl Rove.

interesting. of course, this begs the question of who told rove. senior advisors to the POTUS (even ones nicknamed 'bush's brain') shouldn't have access to the identities of CIA operatives. so who told rove, i wonder?

it looks like the special investigator, scott fitzgerald, already knows who the leaker is...

Miller did some reporting for a story but never wrote an article. She has maintained she intends to go to jail rather than reveal her source -- though Fitzgerald has indicated in court filings that he already knows that official's identity.

apparently the investigation has moved on beyond identifying the leaker and has moved on to perjury (lying under oath for those not in the know).

He is the President's Deputy Chief of Staff. In that role, he will be in charge of coordinating policy between the White House Domestic Policy Council, National Economic Council, National Security Council and Homeland Security Council. He has access to whatever he wants.

but he's not supposed to have access to the identities of undercover CIA operatives. that's something the CIA keeps to itself for very obvious reasons.

and in any case, it's still a federal felony to reveal an undercover operative's name to the public.

so, if fitzgerald knows who the leaker is and still hasn't arrested anyone, it's likely that he's going after more serious charges. if the leaker testified to the grand jury and lied, there is a case for perjury that fitzgerald can press for. if the leaker had help, more people can be charged with obstruction of justice.

I'm banking on Scooter Libby, Cheney's Chief of Staff.

havent we already shown that we dont care if a president lies under oath......or is it only if he lies about something you care about?

I care and both Clinton & Bush are horrible liars.

However...they are winning....because I am starting to not care.
And that is what they want!

Undoubtedly, whoever was responsible for the leak, whether it was Libby, Rove, or somebody else, will probably get away with it. If it had been something IMPORTANT, such as the Whitewater real estate fiasco or Bill Clinton getting a blowjob, I'd bet 10X the resources would have been expended to investigate it and make sure the guilty were punished!
