Well, there i was back home again, for now. We scraped together some 9000 pictures during our six months, and so i was thinking i'd share some of them. My last thread was put a lid on due to some over-nervous sods back home in Norway, but my CO gave me the go to post these once i was back home.
Keep in mind that the Norwegian mission is still ongoing, so it's rather limited what i can comment on regarding some things. But just ask and i'll help as best i can.

EDIT:
For the record, these photos are from the Norwegian 3 Squadron contribution of things down there 2004-2005. Most of these pictures has been taken by me, the other were taken by various member of the team/troop. Credit goes to them for the respective pictures.

Oh yeah, link to my old thread for those interested:

Excellent pictures.

At least we could feel the ambiance in country and not the usual "I love me and my gun" craps.

Good rifle too! (although you seem to have lost the rubber butt-piece, try a cable tie on it next time ;) )

What are those hunting blanket/hides called again? I've seen them before and was thinking about getting one. Are they waterproof?

Just came back from your neck-of-the-woods the other week. I was out in Jottunheimen for a while, I was surprised by the amount of snow still on the ground for that time of year. I nearly froze my b*ll*cks off on Galdhoppingen! Next time I think I'll invest in some skis! ;)

Nice pics anyway mate!

Welcome back mate, been looking forward to this ever since the wankers told you that you couldn't post any more pics while your rotation was down there.

You should send this pic to "Tusentipset" or whatever they call the funny pic they have on the back of Se&Hør, "Dagen er ikke det samme uten VG" or whatever their catchphrase is :D Or to VG themselves, see if they could use it as an ad.

Just wondering, did you ever have to even fire warning shots? Heard that the situation around Kabul was pretty much calm these days. Apart from the occasional explosion, that is.

I'm guessing this was either posed or that you only went a couple hundred yards. ;)
What are those hunting blanket/hides called again? I've seen them before and was thinking about getting one. Are they waterproof? It's called "Jervenduk", it's waterproof, but more importantly, it WILL keep you from freezing to death. Well, that's what they told me, but I still can't feel my big toe.

But in general, most hunters and people that walk in the wild pack one. Any major sports shop in Norway should have a pile of them somewhere.

Ardy, i can't provide statistics for you. ISAF, including the Norwegian contingent has had a very calm six months is all i can say. My job hasn't been to close with and destroy the "enemy", it's been to keep an eye on them instead.

I think Clearday-TRForce saw the crew and asked that question, like "one thing got to the other"... I don´t think he thougth the soldiers are Turks...

Most of the old haunts from the Norbatt days I understand are closed nowdays, but I presume "Woody" is still around near Scotchman in Nethanya?

Good photos as allways. Ever considered jumping over to "the other side of the fence" and do press photography for a living?

Nethanya is not on our itinary this time around, doing the Galilea and Gaza the next time. Never heard of Woody, although the old Norbatt veterans we had in Afgh had loads of stories from the days.
This trip has been mostly a nationwide pubcrawl with a rental vehicle and unlimited mileage, with the mandatory culture bits like the Old City/West Wall etc. included. So far, done Tel Aviv, Eilat, Dead Sea, currently in Jerusalem, going to Hebron tomorrow, and heading back to Tel Aviv on Thursday to get the Shabbat out on town Friday. I'll post some pictures up from this setup once back home for sure. Tel Aviv is fantastic, but Eilat was too plastic IMO. Jerusalem is very nice too.

As for the photography thing, i might actually do it at some point. Met up with Carl Schulze (the C&S dude) and some other German military magazine photographer (Calibre i think it was) in Afgh and they gave me some good tips and inspiration. I'd definately like to do a stint abroad as an assistant PIO for the army some time, once i grow tired of doing ninja stuff that is... ;)

Take care guys,
Marcus

This is off-topic of course, but still: There was a time when one could risk being named on radio norbatt as a new member of the "woodpecker-club" if one had ..'relations' with her.She was a legend - but not for her looks! The whole thing was in rather poor taste, but there you go.

Two tings; why do the two in the first of you last pics wear the “TS” knife and why upside down like that?

Because it was the only knife we were issued (well, except from the Victorinox and the bayo), and probably because they felt they could reach their knives much easier that way.

wow what a sweet pic, one question though, how many Mp5's are withtin your unit, it looks as if only certain people are issued them, while everyone else has the G3?

bra job, mere bilder!

Everyone was issued a G3, an MP5 and a Glock. The aimpoints on the MP5's are private though. When and if you wanted to use it was an individual matter, you're trusted in making the decisicion when it's appropriate to use it vs. the G3, ie. you wouldn't bring it with you into the mountains.

I'm pretty sure it's a T-62. actually. Truly great pics, the best!
Oh man, how much better kit you have than we had in Lebanon during the 80s..Good to see how things have improved. woot woot[/quote]

Yes that's a T-62.
The bore evacator is halfway down the barrel and not at the end of the barrel as on the T-54/55's. Also front plate less sloped than on later Soviet models.
As for the kit nowdays compared to UNIFIL days x2.
If you had asked for more than 1 personal weapon in NORBATT, you would only have been looked upon as a queer.
Nowdays it seems allmost somewhat over the top.

Marcus,
were the mines a constant worry for you? Were you, or any of your
colleagues, hesitant to get out vehicles. Did you look at the ground
permanently to check for tell tale signs? And last question did anyone/any
material suffer injury/damage from mines exploding?

Much obliged,

This is a real recruitment effective picture for me personally. Create a feeling
inside that made me want to cancel my university education and run to the
nearest army careers centre. (I take it this is a Foward Operating Base, not
under shelter on a mission?)

You have a strange way of posting sometimes! :)
- Mines are a constant worry in Afghanistan, but some places worse than others; Kabul, Kandahar, Bagram, and i've heard Pansjir being among the more mined areas of the country.
- There were a couple of times we thought staying in our trucks was a better idea.
- If we'd looked at the ground permanently, we wouldn't be able to do our jobs. But we did look out for telltale signs and acted accordingly when needed.
- Not for our part. The Germans hit mines a couple of times with their trucks, but only minor damage. IIRC, no injuries either.

Solid locking clips on the pouches off your load bearing rig. Satisfied with them our would you have prefered velcro fastening?
Those clip locks are quick to open but more fiddly to close I presume?

This maybe opsec, but were the job of patrol medic alloted to designated people with training, equivalent to jeger1 or what they call the medic course given to para-jaegers or reccies, or did you rotate on the job from patrol to patrol as we did in Leb? Good to see the gear have developed from our gas-mask bags stuffed with dressings and "sky-hig juice" syrettes.

Yeah, i got hold of that rig as the military didn't supply me anything usable. Velcro wears out, but those clips never let me down. Another good thing with that rig is that it handled both G3 and MP5 mags just as well, and it was designed for M16 type mags. Excellent!

Ah, the noiseboxes!
Yeah, our trucks were nice, but it sucked being us whenever there was rain, and the winter really tested our coping abilities. Especially the situation on the 290's were extreme from December-March, and i'd really envy the QRF guys having heated armor to drive around in.

We had a medic per team, four in the troop. Our medics got the level-3 patrolmans course, which included IV's and battlefield surgery/first-aid (pig-shooting in other words). Apart from that, everyone was level-2 qualified. The medical/CASEVAC platoon had several nurses/paramedics and two doctors in it.

Just to annoy you guys a bit.. I viewed some of Marcus`s private pictures tonight. The ones he cant post. The reasons a quite clear, atleast to me.
But I can assure you he has sufficient photos from Afghanistan that he can post to keep this thread going for something like 6 months with weekly postings...

For those of you interested in photography out there, I can just say he has one of the most moving photos I have ever seen in his collection. But the thing is that the "black&white" picture was taken by their Press officer, and the credit belongs to him.. A damn shame in my opinion, but i understand and respect Marcus`s descicion..

I have no personal experience with it. NM149 is built by Våpensmia upon a regular Mauser M98 receiver with a rail on top where the Schmidt & Bender 6x42 scope is located. Nothing fancy indeed, it's more or less a regular hunting rifle with a heavy weight. It was made in two versions because the first one had some flaws.

The boxes with the flag is the foul water the canadians made. While everyone else had their water flown in from the Emirates or Kuwait, the enviromentally concerned Canadians had to use the ground water in Kabul. It was awful, and best used as a computer table in the seriously overheated canadian tents.

Sindrulf, just got a mail telling me about my inbox. Try resending your PM.

Cheers all,
Marcus

Bumming about in Israel?

I guess it's the women p-) And there's more women than men in Israel, so i guess there's lots of hot little stuff waiting to be plucked :D

Ohoy sailor boy!

Happy birthday! A couple of days to late...
Hows life?

The thing about your postcount:
I think it gets ****ed when you change your forum name...

Ps if you do a search for you as a member, it says your last visit was in 1969!!! OMFG Marsuitor has invented a timemachine, he is so hyper high-speed!!

Cheers
Andreas

He should have invented modern computers, started MP.net and ropyrighted it and generally made a killing when he was back there.
Not to mention all those Norwegian oil fields he could have invested in before they were discovered p-)
