1. Why do you use the honorable word "football" for such a vulgar sports?
2. Why don't you just use the metric system? It's a lot better to count in centimeters meters and kilometers and grams and kilograms rather than counting in inches or yards or miles or pounds or ounces.
Two things I've always wanted to know about......
I agree with the first one but not the later. :D
they use yards cuz well Football fields are in yards so they know how big it is lol

J/P. Actually, we use the metric system in education and science. We use the 'English' system in the outside world. It's just being able to associate groceries with pounds versus the weight of a molecular compound in metrics.

Fat AND Lazy. You forgot lazy.
Anyway, we use metric in the military, also. I have know idea why we use both systems. Too lazy to change it, I guess. Or too fat.
The English do the same thing, though, more or less. We should blame them. I am sure the whole thing is somehow someone elses fault.
Maybe we should sue them?
Fat, lazy, and letigious. That's America.

The more important thing you need to know is how many hours you work in week.
For example, you can work 7 days a week but only 5 hours a day oppose to 5 days a week but 12 hours a day.

I think there was alot of talk in the 60's about converting entirely to the metric system over a period of time. Nothing ever came of it.
Why do we use English measurements? Simple: it works. If it isn't broken, don't fix it.

Among findings from the NFL concussion study:
Blows that caused concussions packed an average 980-pound force, strong enough to cause skull fractures if no helmet were worn.
Collisions occurred at an average 20 mph over 15 microseconds of contact.
On average, in players' heads snapped back with an acceleration 98 times stronger than the force of gravity.
I've only had one mild concussion and it sucks.

About Americans being overweight, I won't argue about that. We got too many McDonalds and Taco Bells for people to eat healthy food on their short breaks at work. Everyone just goes for the fast food, because it's fast, cheap and stuffs you up good. I want to bring up another point though, hygiene. In my school, we have people from lots of different countries. I always run into a foreigner that has hygiene problems (I won't say which countries), considering American students taking bath everyday, those foreigners do it every 3 days or so. So, Americans may be fat, but they're sure clean as hell.

I disagree with the first one, and agree with the second...The Metric system is superior because its a decimal based system! you can get far more precise measurements than you can in the Imperial system!
What I dont understand is why the Americans decided to stick with the Imperial Measuring system when you aren't even a member of the commonwealth? why would you use a system that the King himself doesn't even use anymore?

1. I like Socc...errr football more than our Football. Except for College Football, which rocks, except when compared to World Cup Football, which rocks more...plus I have played socc...errrr football for 26 years now.
2. Americans have a hard enough time with math, weights, and measures. The metric system would be so much easier to learn and teach and use. Next time you folks are at work, ask the person next to you how many grams are in a pound and how many feet are in a miles. Then again it is what I was taught first.

You're right Jack, and they do. Students are always complaining about the smelly ones, so they are sent to the nurse to get "educated" on bathing. Check this, in my gym this one kid who doesn't wash for a week or so, farted when I was pinning his feet to the ground when we were doing sit ups. I was the unfortunate person that got teamed up with him (teacher's choice) and I regret the day. He already smelled bad as it was, but when he farted I passed out.

BS. No system allows for greater accuracy. That's completely specious. Now the metric system IS easier to do calculations(in your head) because it's base 10. There is no way in hell either system in more precise than the other.
Deut nailed it on metric v. "imperial system". Anyone who took chemistry in college or even high school should know that accuracy has nothing to do with it. Also, the "imperial system" can be, and often is, decimal based. (e.g. 1/4 inch = .25 inches). 1/4 is just as accurate as .25 whether the topic is inches or centimeters.
What is this about what the King does or does not recognize? Last time I checked England had a Queen. No Kings or Queens have had decision making power in the US since the 18th Century. The fact is we have always used the old "imperial system" and change comes really slow in a country of over 250MM people with the largest economy in the world.
Also, remember that the US Congress decided in the 70's at the height of the oil crisis to adopt the metric system nationwide. During the early 80's road signs on interstates in TN, and maybe other states, included mile and km distances. Not so anymore and any plans to adopt the metric system nationwide are long gone. I read an article one time that said that Ford and GM lobbyists helped in large part in Congress's decsision not to implement the metric system. I have no idea if that is true.

Metric sistem is beter as it is very homogenious system esspecialy when used together with SI. It was created to ease calculations, making them error free and to ease comparsions between values of a different size or base(try to compare value in inches to value in miles). Sayng that metric sistem is only easing calcualtions is like saying that plane isn't beter than rock because it can only fly :) .

okay Herrmannek.... that comment about the rock and the plane made me laugh out loud. That's it.... I just wanted to tell you that. ;)
Hermannek - I'm not saying metric isn't better - but nothing you mentioned has anything to do with accuracy. 1 centimeter is not more accurate than 1 inch it is just a different measurement. Obviously, converting cm to m to km, etc. is far superior to inches to yards to miles, etc.
I took a lot of chemistry/biology/physics in college and high school and I agree with you that metric system is easier/better and I would like to see the US switch. I think we are in agreement on this part. But, having said that, do not confuse ease of use/calculation with accuracy. That's all I'm saying.

Britain supposedly turned metric a few years back, but everythings still miles, vegetables are still sold in pounds etc. Everyone hated metric, it was seen as "complying with the Eurocrats in Brussels" etc etc. Why?! Metric is great, easier to convert cm to m etc and easier to get your head round.
I know I'd prefer metres/km squared than acres, hectares or horses-arse-diameter-multiplied-by-the-length-of-it's-****, or whatever measurements British farmers use ;)

I wasn't refering directly to your post, rather to previous posters saying that ease of calculation isn't nothing speciall :). I agree with you that almost any system can be accurate if properly used...
BTW I still like Chemistry, Physics and Biology. I even consider studying Chemistry or Physics as second faculty, b/c computer science is ussually very abstract and I woud like to solve more practical problems.

tourists from a certain country sweat profusely whenever you come across them in places like london, perhaps it's due to their size. Once, when I was a kid, I passed out on london underground because one of them was holding on to a bar and had his armpit in my face. London Transport police came along and lecture him on healthy eating and responsablebehaviour in the use of the london underground.

We aren't about to adopt no fancy pants metric system. Clearly it's just another tool used by those of the old world to subvert the rights of the individual and abolish the ownership of private property. One day its centimeters and cc's, the next thing you know we're under the lash of a one-world government.
Soccer is an activity designed to feminize the males of the world, and make the eventual takeover less difficult. Witness the countless "metero******" soccer stars, who appear to be men raised with no male role model. It is not to be confused with football which is a territory based game of strength. Soccer on the other hand emphasizes lower body strength (the kind primarily found in women), and fancifully kicking at a ball with one's pinky fingers extended.

seriously though, you are incredibly misguided, I'd say football is popular because it's an all round sport, you don't have to be 8ft tall like basketball players, you need stamina, it's continuous so no time-outs or any of that american BS. Basically it's about strength, skill, speed and stamina, just like being in the armed forces. But if you want a game which more bravery and muscles, then Rugby football is perfect, aussie rules is also good no pansy protection there.

When I was in High School I was on the football team. One day, a bunch of soccer players decided to mouth off a talk about how they were so much tougher then the football team. So we decided to settle the arguement. We agreed that all members of both teams would meet at a nearby park the next day, we'd bring some boxing gloves and find out who was really tougher. So the next day the entire football team showed up, but only 3 soccer players had the balls to show up. Out of them, only one (the biggest guy on their team) was willing to box. So we paired him up with one of our guys who was the same size, and within twenty seconds the soccer player was reduced to tears. :slap:

That's not entirely true Evan, there are some damn fine American soccer players, and soccer is getting extremely popular in the US. Our national team really isn't too shabby, either. Not amazing, but not bad either.

It's stupid to let a soccer player box against a football player. I mean, football is a lot of upper body strength and soccer is all lower body strength. Guess what boxing requires more?

More upper body but you need lower to stay up. Ive been boxing for some time now and you need strong legs to stand your ground and when you throw a punch you use your leg muscles as well.

EvanLloyd, i know you don't like us Americans but saying soccer players can box football players is like saying pigs can fly. It's time to pull your head out of your ass buddy.
Do you actually think people with strong legs can box someone with stronger upper body?
You do not comprehend my words buddy. First of all i do not hate americans. I live in the U.S. and have many many american friends. Second of all i never said soccer players could beat up football players, i said european soccer players are much different from american soccer players, and thirdly i never said someone who has strong legs could box someone stronger than them, i was merely implying that having strong legs in boxing is a good thing because it allows a steadier stance and in some cases a harder hit.

Soccer has become "popular" for many reasons, mostly because it is not a full contact sport. The American moms, they usually control the sporting activities of their offspring far more than the fathers do, have decided they would prefer to have their children playing this decidedly less aggressive sport. This has led to the feminization of the youth of our nation and other deleterious effects. When football was the ONLY summer/fall sport that boys aspired to participate in, America was a much different place. Now we have to deal with soccer. It’s not surprising that the current trend of overweight children has coincided with the growth of soccer. Let the rest of the world have their sissy game. American men need to grab their balls and not let their wives send their children to play non-contact sports.

There's nothing wrong with soccer, in fact it can be extremely physical and downright dirty in some games (ever watched games in South America? ;) ). I love both soccer and football, they're just totally different sports. And Deut, I think it's just coincidence that "the current trend of overweight children has coincided with the growth of soccer," considering the fact that you need very strong endurance to last through 45 minutes of soccer.

If you have never played football in the South, you haven't lived!
We usually had problems with the soccer team as well. The soccer players seemed to dislike everyone else and were unreasonably cocky. Baseball players were kinda preppy and whatnot but most weren't. I went to a private school and we were a football powerhouse, regional/state playoffs was expected. Anyways to make a long story short...soccer players were skinny, cocky dudes floating around the weight room not doing anything. I raced the "fastest" person on the team in like a 100 yard sprint, left him in my dust.

45 x 2=90 minutes of hard gameplay :) , with runing, jumping and thinking...football is fairer game than fatbull, you don't need to be 190 cm high monster to win with such guys...You can fight with speed, strenght, endurance, planing and teamplay. You win by diging weak points of oponents...Football(not American Fatbull) is like real battle where frontall asault is usually bad tactic...

Aussie rules footy is the ultimate mix of endurance, skill, power and athleticism.
I doubt any other version of professional football is played on a bigger ground or for a longer time. Games go for 4 x 20 minute quarters with at least 5 to 10 minutes of time on each quarter (time is stopped during game stoppages). Grounds are to be between 135m and 188m long (148 yards to 206 yards) and 110m to 155m wide (120 yards to 170 yards).
Players can be hit, bumped or tackled (and thrown to the ground) from 360 degrees.
Most midfield players run around 20 kilometres a game. Forwards regularly jump on their opponent’s shoulders and take marks (catches) with their boots 6 feet above the ground.

http://afl.com.au/video/mmp.asp?O=1848432&T=P&URL=http://afl.com.au/loadv.asp Mark of the year contender
The ball can travel from one end of the ground to the other in seconds with accurate kicks that hit their teammates on the chest at 50 to 60 metre distances.
Only the Irish with Gaelic football and maybe a really free flowing, high scoring Rugby Union match (which happens all too infrequently) compare.
One day the rest of the world will catch up and take on this game, until then you will all have to struggle on with your inferior versions and subscribe to ESPN so you can watch something special.
:P
As for the imperial system, Australia has been decimal for nearly 40 years and until all the people who have learnt Imperial die we won't be fully converted. Most people in their mid forties and older think in imperial and then convert to decimal.
I just think the imperial is weird For example, in the measurement of length there are: 12 inches in a foot, 3 feet
in a yard, 5.5 yards in a rod, 4 rods in a chain, 10 chains in a furlong, 8 furlongs in a mile, 3 miles in a league. In the measurement of volume there are: 4 ounces in a gill, 4 gills in a pint, 2 pints in a quart, 4 quarts in a gallon, 2 gallons in a peck, 4 pecks in a bushel.
In the measurement of weight there are: 16 drams in an ounce, 16 ounces in a pound, 2000 pounds in a short ton, 2240 pounds in a long ton. Note that weight is a force and the unit of mass is a slug. A slug? :cantbeli:
An acre is ten chains long and one chain wide, what sort of measurement is that? I'll take the decimal multiples of ten any day.
Soccer, rugby, .... it's jsut sports for christ's sake. Nobody gives a f*ck about what you do and why, just as long as you excercise and don't get fat I don't care how it's called or how it's done.

on the subject of endurance... Isn't american football full of breaks? everytime I've seen it they seem to stop every 2mins and set up again. whereas football is two halves of 45 mins constant play with 10 mins of half time. Rugby is the same excepts the halves are 40 mins.

The towels are to wipe sweat off your hands. Your pants and jersey will get soaked with sweat, usually before the game even starts due to warm-up/stretching/practice. Usually ends up bloody as well.
The 4.3, 4.4., 4.5 times are a player's sprint time in a NFL-sanctioned 40-yard sprint. We would begin in the stance that our position calls for...linemen: 3-point stance, linebackers: athletic position, wideouts: boxer position, etc.

Yeah, between plays there are short breaks for the teams to work out plays/defenses. In that respect, American football is a bit more strategic/tactical than soccer. As for endurance, it does require alot, but a different type than soccer. Think of it kind of like tennis: many short bursts of high energy. It would be like sprinting 50m, then taking a break for 30 seconds or so, and repeat.

I wouldn't exactly call soccer outright gay, more like "curiously thinking about the options"...... As for soccer being more physical you gotta be kidding. Maybe in the grandstands or the pubs, but the girls on the pitch( sorry Nawlins for the sexism) are more likely to cry or fake injuries to receive a field ruling than to actually hurt each other. Aerobically more taxing sure I'll grant you that, but so is speed-walking and just as gay.

That's a pretty strange thing. Almost all countries have some players that do it, but it seems in some countries every player does it. Worst offenders from my limited knowledge (I'm not a big football fan, and I mean either kind when I say that) are players in Spanish and Italian club teams and particularly the Argentine national team.
