From Canada.com (http://www.canada.com/national/nationalpost/news/story.html?id=589dc106-8f34-4924-99af-476bb64d514e)
OTTAWA - Canadians are much fatter than they were a quarter-century ago, a major new study by Statistics Canada has revealed.
[snip]
The one bit of good news is Canada's adult obesity rate of 23% was lower than in the United States, where 30% of adults were obese in 2004.
What the hell is that? Why is it "good news" that Canada's obesity rate is lower than the US? As long as Canada has less obesity than the US, Canada is doing well? As long as Canada is doing better than the US, everything is fine?
Just another example of how Canada constantly compares itself to the US, trying desperately to knock the US down. You never see Canada compare itself with Europe!
Why can't Canada just do it's own thing? Stand on it's own feet?

Because the US is our only neighbour. But you're right though.

So now that whole "world neighbors" claptrap is out the window now? Or does it only apply when its convient to piss on the US just a little bit more?

Bah thats a bunch of horsecrap. There are those in Canada that think the US is a nation of arrogant, aggressive fools. Then there are others that view the US as though we are part of the same family. The majority of Canadians fall into the second category, but only the ones that fall into the first category get there stuff printed.

I agree with you there. One important distinction I notice is with age. Many of the youth (< 25 yrs) in Canada are rabidly anti-American, while the majority of those 40+ yrs old are grateful the US exists. They definitively don't agree with everything the US does, but it's more like a quarrel between siblings vs. a seething hatred. They use theirs heads instead of falling back to the old "what the US wants is always bad for me and my country".
I think Canada could really be a player on the world stage if it simply figured out what it stood for and then stood fast.
Countries who waver too much are simply used by the rest of the world. Switzerland never sent troops to Iraq, but no one ****s on them for it. Why? Cause the rest of the world knows the Swiss are gonna do what the Swiss want to do. They aren't as likely to cave to international pressure, threats or bribes.
You don't have to be a superpower to have power in this world, you only need respect.

Gus: These Canadians suffer from a serious inferiority complex. That's why they built this: The Canadian National Tower! World's largest free-standing structure!

VERY true. I only know a three or four other people my age from school that support Bush and the war in Iraq. They prefer to keep it quiet because they know how the majority is anti-Bush and there are plenty of people who are anti-American and hate just about anything America does.
I prefer to show off my support with t-shirts and stickers.
There were some dip****s who put up a bunch of anti US pictures on lockers and walls (Bush is Hitler etc.), and also some anti US Soldier pictures (one was a picture of American soldiers marching on one side and Nazi soldiers marching on the other side, with a caption that said they were the same thing) which I have ZERO tolerance for so I ripped them all down.
If they keep it up when I go back in September I'll be armed with a camera and some of my own posters and I'll be a doing some counter-protest operations. ;)

They just feel left out probably. Almost all of their entertainment, music and TV come from the US, along with fashion, cars etc. Thats just what i get, Maybe Canadian society just feels overwhelmed in Americanized culture so much that they are just fighting to maintain their individuality.

Canada's inferiority complex ha whatever. Its more like the misguided need of whoever wrote that article to feel superior to our neighbour.
I don't need to cite examples of Canada's so called superiority to the US. All I know is this is a far better place to live and am completely confident saying that.

If I really cared I could probably dig up quotes of people on fox news bashing Canada for this and that. Guess what there are assholes on both sides of the borders who like to bash one another. Let them cause they're immature morons.
At the end of the day there probably aren't many countries in the world with as much in common as the US and Canada.

Entertainment? We get alot of yours but we provide ourselves with even more.
Music? Same thing, in fact theres alot more Canadian music in the states than american music in Canada.
Fashion? Where do you guys get your fashion from? Id say all fashion usually starts off in Europe.
Cars? 3/4 of cars in the states are made in Canada.

You missed my point. The article wasn't bashing the US. The US does in fact have more obese people than Canada.
My point was, why mention it at all? I just found it really odd when I saw that quote.
I've come across this attitude before in Canada. Someone might bring up the long waiting lists for medical care in Canada. Instead of trying to solve the problem, they just say "Well, it's better than in the US!".
Most Americans I know have real affection for Canada. They consider Canada to be a valuable partner. I don't think I've heard a single anti-Canadian comment in the US (face-to-face conversations). Most Americans have more important things to do.
If Canadian's think they live in the best country in the world, great! If you don't feel that way about your country, you're probably not an effective citizen.
It's the same as when someone who is fat tries to find someone fatter so they can look down on them. It points to something deeper.

when i lived in the states, i had people **** on my country, even towards my face. and when our guys were bombed in afghanistan, some kid made a joke to me about "scoring one for the good guys". Needless to say that kid didnt say much to me after that. ;)
But i have heard many anti-canadian comments directed at me from idiots. Not knowledgable respectable americans, but idiots.
And you know what? I could care less about the people up here who say **** about the states, cus you have the same type down there, who feel that way about us up here.
it goes two ways.
and as long as there are us, that consiuder you guys a valuable friend, it really shouldnt bother you that much!
So cheers
now go enjoy yourself with one of those watered down beers ;)

thats the point of journalism, it's the same as comparing crime rates or polution. Comparing one nation to another in the same vacinity allows the readers to see how their nation stands up to its neighbors. this article isn't U.S bashing, its just proper journalism.

Yea I actually did get your point but I think its a stupid one to bring up in the first place. No one cares who has more obese people in Canada or in the US.
What I was saying is no matter where you go in the US or Canada you will find examples of idiot writers trying to get a one up on the other one. Canada has this and the US doesn't have that. OR Canda's armed forces oh you mean the US armed forces? **** like that. It's always gonna happen so the best thing is just to ignore garbage like it. Instead of holding it up and saying look Canadians have an inferiority complex see, I have proof from this one douche who writes news articles. Or this dumbass Member of Parliament who says dirty words about Americans.
My point is yes there are jerks but the vast majority of Canadians don't think like that.
