ESG 1’s interception was the third in two weeks by coalition maritime forces in the region. USS Decatur (DDG 73) detained a dhow and its 12 crewmembers and seized upward of $10 million in hashish Dec. 15; USS Philippine Sea (CG 58) detained two dhows and their 21 crewmembers and seized 85 pounds of heroin and 150 pounds of methamphetamines Dec. 20. Of the total 33 crewmembers originally detained in the first two interceptions, 10 have been transferred to a secret, undisclosed facility for further questioning by U.S. officials. They were transferred after initial interrogations revealed possible al Qaeda connections. The remaining 23 crewmembers were turned over to officials of a country in the region. The detainees from the Jan. 1 seizure remain with U.S. officials aboard U.S. warships in the region for further questioning. Of the previously seized dhows, one was sunk by coalition maritime forces due its lack of seaworthiness, and two others were turned over to other countries in the region. With the exception of small amounts kept as evidence and for analysis, all contraband has been destroyed. U.S. Navy photo by Photographer’s Mate Airman Jeffrey Klemm. (RELEASED)

Baghdad 29 December 2003.

http://www.nldetirak.nl/eenheden/24ostcie/080104verkpel2.jpg

http://www.nldetirak.nl/eenheden/24ostcie/080104verkpel3.jpg

http://www.nldetirak.nl/eenheden/24ostcie/080104verkpel4.jpg

http://www.nldetirak.nl/eenheden/24ostcie/080104verkpel6.jpg

http://www.nldetirak.nl/eenheden/24ostcie/080104verkpel7.jpg

http://www.nldetirak.nl/eenheden/24ostcie/080104verkpel8.jpg

Sectievuur kort op elkaar…
Over elkaar heen vuren.
Reactie op doelen…..
Het zat er allemaal in!

Choreografie een 9
Uitvoering een 8.5
En vooral dooooorgaan!

Bachdad december 29th 2003
Here some more news from the far Baghdad Iraq.
We just passed christmas and celebrated it on a fitting manner like the Americans are used to in my opinion. The evening before christmas we had a delicious meal and after that there was presents for everyone. Santa was present too.
The first day of christmas was a day off to give the soldiers handling security a quiet day off. Everyone stayed as much 'home' and did whatever they wanted to as they could.
Santa pulled out with the Humvee and surprised the children in the neighbourhood and the soldiers with candy and other delicacies like the photos show. However the reality of the environment can be seen at Santa as well, too bad but necessary however.
Second day of christmas was a normal workday as al others, so for us christmas was already over again. The coming days are like the days before and we're looking forward to newyear.
From all Dutchies in Baghdad we wish everyone a healthy and prosporous 2004.

To be able to fullfill the task of patrolling and delivering force protaction, with sometimes other tasks on top of that, it's from the upmost importance that the vehicles of the 21 INFCIE (INFanterie CompagnIE - Infantry Company) are in perfect shape.

On the 1st of january we started the new year quite well. After a "wild" evening with lots of alcoholfree beer (poor guys :() it was time to go for the range again. Goal of this day was shooting some of the other weapons than we are normally used to : AK47, Mauser rifle, Glock 19 pistol, Shotgun e.d. With our own weapons we did some exercises in the form of reactionshooting. On this photo instruction with the Glock 19.

The Mauser rifle is a remainder from the past, on some of the rifles you can still see inscriptions that remember from the 2nd World War. This weapon is a bolt-actionrifle that is mainly used for long range.

The AK-47 is THE weapon that's being used here, needs little instruction, so is easy in use, foulproof and sometimes even gives the feeling it's a toy gun as well...nothing could be further from the truth.

http://www.nldetirak.nl/eenheden/24ostcie/080104verkpel4.jpg

Because the AK-47 is mostly used as an automatic weapon it's preferable to heavy a decent steady firing basis, therefore the crouching shooting position is most fitting for this.
