Poland in Talks on Hosting U.S. Military Bases (http://news.lycos.com/news/story.asp?section=Breaking&storyId=812235)
WARSAW (*******) - Poland has launched negotiations with Washington on hosting U.S. military bases on its territory, Defense Minister Jerzy Szmajdzinski said Thursday.
"We expect the second round of consultations on the issue of bases early this year. It's too early to give any details," Szmajdzinski told the parliament's defense committee.
He added Poland was generally in favor of hosting the bases, but the issue of who would cover their operating costs remained open.
The United States began a diplomatic offensive last month in a dozen European capitals to discuss a redeployment strategy expected to involve closing bases in western Europe and reflect a greater NATO focus on the east and south.
Poland, a staunch supporter of the war in Iraq, could see one of the biggest build-ups of U.S. forces in Europe on its territory, diplomats say.
Poland joined NATO along with the Czech Republic and Hungary in 1999 -- 10 years after they toppled communist rule and escaped from the former Soviet Union bloc. Seven more countries, mostly ex-Soviet satellites, will join the alliance this year.
Russia has expressed concern over any U.S. military moves closer to its border. But Washington has said any redeployment of troops to eastern Europe was intended to tackle new security threats and was in no way directed against Moscow.
Szmajdzinski declined, however, to confirm a newspaper report that American forces could take over an air base at Powidz, to the west of Warsaw.

Does Russia trust Poland? Since Poland has allowed U.S. to have bases closer to Mother Russia. Could Russia think that this is it the Cold War come true, the invasion of Russia has may begin?

i thought part of the agreemnet with moscow about NATO expansion was that there wouldn't be any basing of troops in the new states obviously i was wrong.
I know the costs of maintaining Garrisons in germany is getting prohibitivley expensive. But can't see 1 uk armd div moving to Poland how on earth would senior officers go home for the weekend.

No your not wrong, that was part of the aggrement that US would not move bases eastward. Breaking the rules, but what is Russia gonna do (invade us). Im sure US will passify Russian fears with US dollars or by whatever means. Yeah it is cheaper in Poland, and makes more sense. We got half population of germany meaning we got more open space and less restrictive laws concerning noise etc. Makes more economic, political and militaristic sense to move to Poland. We simply got bigger playing fields and more of them with less restrictive laws. But people have to keep in mind these will not be huge ass bases. they will be as they call them skeleton bases - small base with less troops and an airfield for inernational capabilities. These bases will not house 100 000 troops, and they might not even come to poland who knows.

The agreement you mentioned was between NATO Alliance and Moscow. Plans for moving US bases to Poland are strictly bilateral, it's between Warsaw and Washington. So, theoreticaly, NATO-Russia agreements have nothing to do with it.

First of all, there's no talk about moving to Poland any of US or UK big units. All suggestions points that there will be only some storage depots, one or two air bases. Nothing more. Still, these are only speculations presented by newspapers.

I hope that these bases do good for the Polish economy. Poland really deserves it after being under the Soviets and Germans for the last 50 years.
Poland is great. Lots of Poles came to Canada during Communism and a lot of my best friends are Polish. Great people.

@Whistler:
Poland was only "under" the Soviets for the last 50 years. You probably need a history refreshing course. ;)
Normally countries with stationed US troops have to compensate the US for this. And even if not...the contribution of these bases to the economy of Poland will be neglectable.
By the way...the volume of trade Poland has with the EU is 15 times greater than the one Poland has with the US. Which is not surprinsing if one considers Polands geographical position.

Ya 50 years was what I said, plus 5 or 6 years of Germans.
Either way it sucks and its good that they are free now. I hope having US bases there brings in money to the country to build up the economy.

poland is trying to do 'everything possible' to get the US in a relationship similar to the UK's relationship with the US (relying on the UK to support the US in endeavors such as OIF despite strong domestic criticism, etc).
i just threw that one out into the air. ;)

Yup. US is not that big of an economic partner 80% of our trade is with the EU and mostly Germany and France, although we are heading more to the east where our products are more accepted and known.

Yeah Im one of them.. :D Love Canada.
Ok still I don't see why the UK would need to put bases in Poland?
