According to the story he was both 82nd Airborne and with a Ranger Bn.
Rangers are considered an SOF unit and fall under SOCOM among other acronyms. The story did seem to have some holes in it though.

Pretty good story. The only thing different between him and I, as far as schools, is that I never went to the Marines.

You can only be with one or the other...

He started out with the 82nd. He ended up with the Rangers before his inter-service transfer. The article doesnt tell his whole story. Just the essence about what he did. He has been a DI for a while. My attention was brought to this article about him by a friend of mine whos brother was a recruit in his platoon last year. That's how I know he was with a Ranger Bn.
Anyways...I think its a good read.

Hey, little off topic, aren't LRSU's considered to be SOF also? They are all airborne qualified, all E-5 and above are Ranger qualified, team leaders and above are HALO qualified, plus they do long range recon and surveillance. Sounds like high-speed low-drag stuff, just wondering if they are SOF.

No, I wasn't a DI. I went through the same schools he did and was re-enlisting to go Division LRRS, as they called it in my day, with the 82nd Airborne, as a sniper. But when the time came to get my orders, they decided they were full. So I decided to go ahead and ETS. I really wanted to get in there, or there was no reason for me to stay in, in the Infantry.

LRSU's are not under USSOCOM/ARSOC, but do perform a lot of "SOF" roles, though often at a different level from other units. Have a good one, and just some thoughts...
