Guys, just thought of putting up some info on Indian special forces.Although equipment wise we are far behind , but selection and training is simmilar to SAS,DELTA and SEALS .In fact i have heard rumours that many US personnel on exchange quit the course. But i dont know wether this is true as i am not in the military yet.But a recruiter tried to discourage me from opting for SF ,he said many have died or have become hadicapped due to injuries suffered during selection or training.
Info on the special forces is very difficult to come across, they are very secretive about training, tactics etc. There are very few books or websites.
The very first special unit created was Para commandos in the 1960s.Before 1947 India was ruled by the brits, and i think more than a million Indians served in the british army.During WW2 many joined brit commando units,i have read about Indian officers with the british Special Operations Executive taking part in various missions, i guess some might have joined the SAS or SBS but i have not come across any info on that. The Para commandos selection is simmilar to SAS,forced marches etc.Even tactics are kind of simmilar during one of the wars with our neighbour they conducted David Stirling style jeep raids deep within enemy territory.Indian SF even uses the winged dagger batch like the SAS.

During the late 80s there was a need felt to create an crack anti-terrorist force, thus the National Security Gaurds were created. It was modelled on GSG 9 and I think DELTA.NSG is highly trained in CQB(it has its own killing house called the combat room)protecting VIPs,and long range patrolling, hostage rescue & protecting VIPs.Although i compare our SF to DELTA,SAS etc i point out again that the equipment is very inferior, this is causing serious problems.India has been fighting islamic terrorist groups and other terrorist groups for more than 15 yrs now.Last year 2 fidayeens stormed a religous place and killed aroun 16 civilians and injured many. The incident occured in the evening and by the time the NSG arrived it was dark.As the NSG did not have sufficent NVGs,they simply walked out in the open drawing fire and pinpointed the terrorists and eliminated them. But they lost one operative and another got a bullet in his head and is in a comma. The NSG commander told the media that they could have taken the terrorist out with no loss,if they had Night vission equipment.

In the 80s the Indian Navy felt the need to raise its own special operations unit. Some officers and sailors were sent to train with Navy seals(they must have attended BUDS ,i guess) and Brit SF(Royal Marines & SBS ,again I am just guessing)These personnel returned to form Marine Commandos or simply known as MARCOS.
MARCOS are highly trained ,supposed to be better than their Army counterparts, basic training after selection lasts for 2yrs.Selection lasts for 9 months.
This is the course many US personnel are supposed to have failed. Many Sailors I met on different occasions confirmed this, some said that some US marines failed the course, they never mentioned personnel from any other western countries. But again I have never been able to confirm wether this is fact or sailors bragging after a few beers

Weapons used by Indian SF is outdated according to western standards but generally AKs,HK,MP 5setc
