Top Chinese general warns US over attack
China is prepared to use nuclear weapons against the US if it is attacked by Washington during a confrontation over Taiwan, a Chinese general said on Thursday.
“If the Americans draw their missiles and position-guided ammunition on to the target zone on China's territory, I think we will have to respond with nuclear weapons,” said General Zhu Chenghu.
Gen Zhu was speaking at a function for foreign journalists organised, in part, by the Chinese government. He added that China's definition of its territory included warships and aircraft.

Besides, we can look at it this way. The US will reduce our stock of nuclear weapons and make the peaceniks happy, solve some of the problems of overpopulation in the world, conserve precious non-renewable resources, and eliminate the only nation on earth who could be a serious threat. And all over some tiny nation that makes DVD players.
Sure the heat spike over China might adversely affect the rate of global warming but the overall reduction in fossil fuel used by a billion people should level that out in a year or two.
Seems like win-win to me. ;)
Honestly, this sounds like an awful lot of saber rattling to me.

Strategic Nuclear Weapons: 7,300
Nonstrategic Nuclear Weapons: 4,700 - 11,700 (based on released classified docs; estimated tactical and nuclear reserves)
Total Nuclear Weapons: 12,000-19,000

Approx. 4500 weapons
http://www.cdi.org/issues/nukef&f/database/usnukes.html
Many missiles have more than one warhead, so the number of warheads would probably come to roughly come between 7500-9000.
Here's some more:

I should have broken those numbers down a bit more.
the 9K are stategic weapons. such as the Tident D-5II, ready to go at a moments notice
the Tactial weapons are things like nuclear Gravity bombs (W-87 mkII). Most of those are in the Nuclear emergency reserves and would take some time to get out and ready. thats why it jumps to about 19000.
the ready to go weapon systems are at around 9K like you said.
sorry for the confusion.

It doesn't matter if you have enough to turn their country into a parking lot 10 times over.
A parking lot is a parking lot, 7500 is still overkill.
Sabre rattling yes, but would you bet 50 million people (more, probably) that they're not that crazy?
what i still dont understand is that a country so big wants a land so tiny so badly. truly wild. risking nuclear war because someone else may try and defend the isle? crazy. then again if the US backs down and does nothing that gives china much incentive over future dealings to do what it wants and threaten nukes. call thier game, im bored. god nuclear war would be horrible.

If China blanketed the U.S. with nukes, we're out 300 million Americans? If we returned the gift in kind, they're out several billion Chinese? Sounds like a good trade to me.
All this for something as stupid as trying to take a little piece of land called Taiwan. In the process of reuniting "our people", they cause genocide on a global scale. Great logic.

Don't know is China insane enough to use nukes, but if they do and strike first I think that all other countries that have some nuclear capability won't stand still and wait for the winner. So my guess is that china's going to be left as burning pit of radiation. :|
I for one think Bush is the wrong guy to try to play out the nuclear card against..
talk is cheap
China is not going to risk nuclear war over Taiwan, this is politics at its best (worst?) they're just trying to keep their own people 'happy' ... look at how powerfull we are, we are threathening the US so we must be doing something right, right?'

If this whole thing ends up heating up, any possibility the Chinese would get pissed their government is using their lives to try to get Taiwan, possibly overthrow?
Hm, stupid thought, the government probably doesn't even let them know there's a world outside of China.
And so we raise the BS flag.

Well, I think the consensus is that China is just trying to use the big boy voice to try and get some respect. Even with the sheer size of the PRC
Army, most people don't see them as a peer to the US. I don't really think China is that worked up about Taiwan, but letting the round eyes in the US have any say so in their dealings with the little country is just going to agitate the Chinese. It doesn't matter if we are the bigger dog. Bush needs to be careful of two things: don't make the PRC feel cornered or threatened, and don't make the Chinese lose face.

It's 2005, and the ChiComs are threatening nukes over the US? rofl These guys want their own personal cold war, because they missed out on the superpower status. They think a superpower is a nation that can blow the whole world up. But face it, China has no ideology that can be spread to other nations. Therefore, it's not close to being influential, and will never be a superpower. This Chinese general is pathetic.

This is one thing that scares the crap out of me. So, is this China building up to an invasion of Taiwan? Basically saying the US can't intervene at all, otherwise the nukes will fly? Or is it just a load of crap? And, knowing the Chinese rhetoric, would the US respond if China invades Taiwan?

ok, let me stated myself before anything.
I am a Chinese-Canadian that came from Hong Kong(Is a good place, you should make a visit for at least once in your life, Japan as well :P ).
From Chinese point of view, or China point of view, Taiwan is belong to China, reunion is just the matter of time. China doesn't view this as invasion, and certainly not the interest of *stealing* technology (Coz a China general don't care this ****). Does 100 nuclear bombs and 1000 bombs make a different of destroying only 1 country. Might be more fireworks going on, but certainly both will end up MAD ( Mutal Assured Destruction), that's why Soviet Union never fired a single nuke.
Of course I reject China of using nukes or even any arms for the reunion. Just that this problem couldn't be forever extent. China views it as the civil problem, but w/ the intervence of US, this worsen the problem. Obviously, this is utter stupid for China to risk of gettin nuked becuase of gettin bak this small piece of land. But China values it beyond then that, she treats it as part of the country, and it shall not be seperated.
I was *SHOCKED* when I heard this news in the forum. I was like, Hong Kong better not get nuked....or 7 million of lives will get vaparioued.
And I totally reject the idea of this ****, but I am just speaking as the China point of view....

The Taiwanese might be being bullied, but not the US. Tough anti-US rhetoric is just how dictators and communists try and puff up in front of their own people. It is typically a political show for the benefit of their own countrymen.

Yes taiwan is china and china is taiwan. I won't mine Democratic China to unify taiwan in a peaceful way. But its a undemocratic country and treathen taiwan with invasion. plus 800 missiles pointed to the population. Its like you pointed a gun in their face and demanding that "your azz is mine". Treathen the use of nukes. Wow...China really needs a hug.
