Estonia is a small country (the green one) situated south of the Gulf of Finland, with a population of only 1.4 million. The finns in the north are their "brothers" while they share a very similar language and ancestors. The Estonian Defence Forces (and the other baltic ones) has been built up after their independence in the early 90´s with help from neighbouring countries, mainly Sweden and Finland that has more or less donated them their old equipment.

Estonian conscripts on their arrival. Are learnt the basics of a formation
immediately, (guess its universal, everyone who has been in the army
must get backflashes by this :) )

"You lazy sons of *****es, when you were still in your mamas belly I was killing commies, you useless
piece of ****..." Oh I hope he doesn´t say that, because Finland and Sweden that has educated and
trained their officers has tried to get a more democratic and more productive approach to it.

Yes most of it is more or less donated from abroad. Usually the Estonians only have paid the transportation costs, and not always even that. During my army days (in Sweden) we had a couple of guys from Latvia and Lithuania in our company. They had already completed their military service in their countries and were officer cadets, and had moved to Sweden, learnt a little swedish and then they did their military service all over again, the only difference was that they didn´t have a swedish flag on their uniforms but their own.

I think they stayed for about 6 months, then they moved on to swedish officer school. The whole point was that they should learn it the "western way" so that they could go back to their countries and teach out those methods, and not the old ineffective Sovietski-style. Our officers said that the first time the baltic soldiers came here they were surprised, because no one beat the **** out of them :)

Seems like we Finns and the Swedes as well have also teached the Estonians one more "useful custom": the use of rubber boots...

Ah, the M14's I talked about in another thread recently seem to be used on these sorts of "ceremonial services" as well.

Do I dare to say it, but in theory these guys here are better equipped than some of our guys during basic training.

Actually the one that looks like Galil is not Valmet but Sako. It's called the M95 (or 7.62 RK 95 in Finnish Army). Valmet however did manufacture the older model, called M76.

What? You gave away the newest standard issue firearm? 100% sure that it is a finnish firearm on the latest pic? I know that one of the Balticstates boought Galil from Israel.

It's not bleach white because that gets dirty to fast.

Or rather, it gets spotty and destroys the camouflage effect. The somewhat darker hue also works better in shadows than pure white.

It's not about "giving". SAKO can produce Rk95's much faster than the Finnish Army intends to buy them. ;)

The "bazooka" type weapon is an Israeli B-300. The US Marines adopted it also, back in 1985. In the USMC it known a the MK-153 SMAW. It is a 83mm, reoadable, anti-tank/bunker weapon.
Nice to see the Estoniaians using the 106MM M-40A1 recoiless rifle! The USA got rid of that years ago! One photo shows a M-220A1 TOW launcher on a vehicle! They have some good stuff!
Odd though, that they would have PRC Type 56-2 rifles, Swede AK-4 and GALIL AR weapons? All different calibers!
Plus the three different helmets, Russian SSh-60, US Kevlar and Swede type!
Keep the quality photos coming!

That's what I thought, too. Kind of a hard task logistically to supply the troops with so many different calibres, parts etc. for the weapons. No *****ing here, I really like the variety of small arms seen in those great pics. http://www.click-smilies.de/sammlung0903/travesmilies/smilie_daumen1.gif

Hmm, the rifles in the picture are Galils alright. I was just trying to make a point that the new Finnish rifle is not made by Valmet but Sako... Estonia doesn't have any finnish assault rifles to my knowledge. Then again, I don't know much about the Estonian Defence Forces.
Have a good one.

Will be pretty cool to play around with some leftover muzeum exhibits like the m-14 etc. I just hope I won`t be sent in Iraq to fight for uncle Sharone and USrael....
And please, don`t bash the skin. The Estonians honor the SS very much, they *are* nationalistic, so skins are a common sight. All that of cource, not my assumptions but what my friend who was in that army sayd.

Yeah I can see you now in Iraq with your Israeli Galil and the Israeli bazooka (and I am sure there are a few other Israeli weapons that your military has) and you thinking your fighting for Sharon.

Yeah we "jooz" conspired to get you from Estonia (and your military) to fight for us with our weapons

It's funny that we give you our old 105mm howizers and they become your only field artillery. Those guns are pre WWII era :o. I have payd a lot of time with those guns and must say that they are even nowadays good weapons.

within their respective units, and thus end up looking pretty professional IMO. In
a way these guys almost look like South African troops, with their Galil´s.

You're what? 12 years old?

Jesus man, their country isn't exactly an economic powerhouse. With a population of 1.4 million (that's smaller than most cities in the US) they are remarkable professionals who train just as hard and are just as committed to their duty as any American, Canuck, Brit or even Russian soldier if the pictures are any indication. Kudos to their neighbors too for donating the equipment and providing some of the training.

In short: take your opinion and blow it out your ass. Show them some respect.

Variety is not very bad. Rounds are generally interchangeable weapons which correspond to NATO standards.

One of US consultants who were helping to recreate army’s for Baltic countries had said very straightforward - "There is no need to buy new weapons, because there is already a $hitload of weapons in the world. Better spend your money improving your knowledge and military experience".

That was a strategy for all Baltic states in 1995-2003. After joining NATO of course we will acquire some more modern equipment but these weapons that we have now are still good too and are perfect for training purposes.

I have trained with the galil (I'm Estonian, my first post ! Hi everyone ! :)) and have only seen a handfull of other assault rifles (mostly AK). The Estonian army does not use any other rifles at the moment and only some use them as a personal choise. Yes, indeed a variety was used in the begining but nowdays only galils.

The galil is crap - do you see any israeli soldiers useing them ? And in desert conditions ? It's not an accurate or a reliable weapon. Just my .02

The Galil is still deployed in Israel with reserve and artillery units (people keep saying its been completely withdrawn, and then I keep seeing pictures to the contrary). The MAR is still around with Police too, and before the Magal showed itself to be unreliable, it was fielded as well. I can't honestly believe a gun that was based in large part of the Kalashnikov design is unreliable, and the most consistant reasons I've heard for replacement in the IDF is the lack of accessories, weight, and in my opinion, the prevelance of American handouts that have long cut into domestic Israeli weapons manufacture.

Yeah well , the "westernization" of their equipment figures , since they're a member of NATO these days..

And you know , doesn't Estonia get some sorts of "handouts" (sorry for copying the Israeli guy for that term) from NATO in forms of equipment and so on , since I know Sweden and Finland (alright , not NATO members) have supplied the Baltic armies with all sorts of infantry equipment along with other countries.

A question for you Estonian guys: How are the SISU XA-180s holding up? I remember not everyone in Estonia being happy about the purchase claiming they were old etc. Also, do you use a special nickname for them? Nice. So, how much did a weapon gain in weight.....hopefully not significally...

R.S
03-18-2009, 02:07 PM
It gained around 1.5 kg, but at least most of it will sit atop the action, not like the Galil which has most of the stuff weighting up the nose.

Surprisingly the weapon as such - 2 moa dot (with 3x magnifier it covers some 18 cm-s at 100m), with my personal bipod thrown into the mix - was pretty accurate. It was around 2 moa-s, enough to pick which part of the face gets shot.

right now I'm begging that guy, who started this thread in 2004 - please, put adequate links to pictures you've been commenting, or erase old photos. When I read your comment, that on photo we see first Estonian soldier, killed in Iraq, but photo itself shows some guy, shaking hand of our President (both are alive), or Funeral ceremony marked, as a Pretraining in Denmark, I start to laugh and cry at the same time...

good video, thanks.

Shows quite a casual day for Estonians there and if I may, problems or at least challenges for the NATO troops in general -- to few numbers (few platoons ain't enough to clear the village nor it is a wish to do so. So they always have to rely on air power. Taliban knows that, fears, but plays the game well enough -- if only some villagers stay, there's a risk of collateral damage. And even if that does not occur, air strikes brings no presents to the homes of the villagers)

It`s hard to find a pic soldier wearing "telkmantel", cause it`s not so popular against rain as special rubber jacket and trousers.

That's pretty cool. You guys have outreached us...again :) We were planing to acquire new helicopters as well, although we need larger and more universal helicopter and a bigger number of them. And yet this seems like a good idea for SAR roles. How much did you pay for them? Due to the crisis, the helicopter purchase has been postponed for several years at least in our country, I wonder where did you find that much money.

Thanks for the photos. A few questions:

Is there an artillery range in Estonia or is that part of the exercise held in Finland/some other friendly country? Or are they just shooting blanks?

Are the guys marked with yellow training opponents?

In the last picture the mortar seems to be set up horribly. The base plate should be always dug into earth. Otherwise it will cause the mortar to move with the first shot and force the platoon leader (or whoever does it) to have to realign the it.

Yes

So? First time seeing second hand equipment? It's cheaper, it's ok for training and general use if it works, so why not having it now and later purchase newer and more expensive stuff. Or do you suggest, Estonia should produce artillery, trucks and assault riffles itself?

There's soon a contract to be signed for 30 000 uniforms, hopefully fielding starts in 2010.

And about the winter digi camo, is there any specific reason why there are gray squares on it ? Why not a completely white camo ?

Thanks. The winter digi looks extremely awesome. On Wikipedia it says that there's 4 types of digi camo : forest, winter, desert and urban, my question is what does the urban digi look like and is it in use ?
Also about the latest pics you posted, why is it that some of our soldiers are wearing US Marine desert camouflage , did we ran out of our own uniforms ? :D

Estonia have recived tons ans tons of military eqiupment from Swedens armed forces. When I got my basic training back in 2003 we used to use the old F13 airbase in Norrköping. All the runways and the sorrunding was full of hundreds of decommisioned Bv 206 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bandvagn_206), Bv 202 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bandvagn_202), Tgb 20 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volvo_C303), Tgb 13 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volvo_C303), Bofors 40 mm guns (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bofors_40_mm_gun), trailers, mobile generators, tractors, fule trucks, Cheverolee pickup trucks (look like never been used) ecs ecs and about half of it would be sent to Estonia and some other Baltic countrys.
The other half would be scrapped.

Estonia have recived tons ans tons...

what is your messages point. If U are interested, there are plenty pictures in same thread, and in the beginning - where U can find your shopping list up to swedish helmets. There are plenty swedish TGBs sold to public or just send to scrap. Only few things are in common use in voluntary Estonian Defence League - and this list contains only few things: ksp 58, 90mm AT gun; 84mm CG, AK4. Thats it.

regards,

P.S. But we are slightly running out of Pasi (Sisu) APC in A-stan. As you got new Patria XA360 AMV; what you do with XA200 APCs? Any info?!

Estonia signs contract with Systematic to provide C2IS/BMS systems.

Pilot phase for the Estonian Command and Control system 6 November 2009 marks the signing of an important agreement between the Estonian Ministry of Defence and Systematic Software Engineering Oy, based in Tampere, Finland.

10 November 2009

After a rigorous process of competition, evaluation and selection, the Estonian Ministry of Defence has selected Systematic to deliver an extensive range of situation awareness products aimed at enabling units of the Estonian Defence Forces to deploy rapidly and effectively in both national and international operations.
Unique “Try before we buy” opportunity

The Command Control and Information System (CCIS) project will begin with a one-year trial period in which Systematic will provide the Estonian Defence Forces with a wide range of command and control products for trial and testing as an integral part of the normal exercise schedule.

Building on the results of this pilot phase, Systematic and the Estonian Defence Forces will collaborate on configuring a highly effective command and control system based on these products. The primary focus will be on addressing Estonia’s specific needs in national as well as international operating environments and in meeting its NATO membership commitments.
Solid basis for future purchasing decisions

This configuration will then be tested thoroughly to verify that Estonia’s practical requirements and national and international performance expectations are met.

This unique process will enable Estonia to establish the best possible basis for the application of selected products in its CCIS system.

It also minimises risk, ensures significant value for money, and supports rapid roll-out of a highly effective system for Estonian command, control and communications. Crucially, this innovative approach also makes it possible for all the parties concerned to work together to determine an accurate, comprehensive and relevant set of specifications closely tailored to how Estonian Defence Forces use their systems and equipment in practice.
In-country support

With a view to providing ideal in-country support for the CCIS system, Systematic has signed a partner agreement with the Estonian company Webmedia – one of the largest software development companies in the Baltic states.

The objective is to ensure a solid basis for training Estonian Defence Force personnel in how to use the many Systematic software products in the most effective and consistent ways.

Well, it won the competition. It's quite limited procurement. The good thing about it is that it has various warheads, for example anti-bunker which we also bought.

Having two different “anti tank” (rather anti IFV) grenade launchers of same class makes it difficult to train troops. Swedish army uses excellent AT4 training device. It has 9 mm machine pistol barrel inside. Tracer ammunition is used for training shooting. Soldier can see there he is hitting. Cheap and effective method.

( Sorry for any Reposts)

CAMP DWYER, Helmand province, Afghanistan – Many cultures throughout the world sustained themselves because they had men and women who had a warrior spirit and a willingness to fight for a common cause.

A company of soldiers from the Estonian army demonstrated this characteristic last year while supporting 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment in Now Zad, Afghanistan. Now they have another opportunity to continue NATO's mission here with 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment in southern Helmand province.

"I would jump at the chance to serve with any Estonian unit in the future, and I appreciate the almost six months that I did have to learn and serve with them," wrote Company F commanding officer Capt. Ross Schellhaas, in a 2/7 after-action report. The battalion, stationed at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms, Calif., finished their most recent Afghanistan deployment in November.

Estonian soldiers had similar thoughts of admiration for their brothers in arms. "The same basic soldier drills and common thinking on the battlefield made the cooperation very smooth," said Estonian Capt. Villiko Nurmoja, liaison officer stationed at Forward Operating Base Delhi. "Working together with U.S. Marines is a privilege which some units never experience."

Estonia, located in northeast Europe on Russia's western border, has a population of 1.4 million people and is no stranger to conflict, transitioning from German control during WWII to a Soviet government for 50 years. In 1991, they became an independent nation, joined the United Nations and have been developing economically ever since. They have participated in NATO's missions in Iraq and Afghanistan since 2003.

"They share the same risks, same harsh living conditions, and they have absolutely no issues with either of those," said Maj. Mike D. Broyan, Regimental Combat Team 3's future operations officer and Estonian integration planner. The 2/8 and their Estonian attachment fall under RCT-3's command in Helmand. "That's what they want – to be in the trenches with us."

The Estonian soldiers moved into 2/8's battle space at the end of September and took over Patrol Bases Shamshad and Masood, previously occupied by elements from 2/8's Company F. They share these bases with elements of the Afghan national army and will continue the battalion's counterinsurgency operations until 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment takes over later this year.

"They're coming at the exact right time to set the conditions for the relief in place and framework," said Lt. Col. Christian G. Cabaniss, 2/8 battalion commander. "It will be hard for the insurgents to react to it."

To prepare for the deployment, the Estonian army participated in training similar to their American counterparts, like reaction drills and company-sized exercise simulations. The exercises were enhanced to reflect lessons learned from testimonials of real combat scenarios in Afghanistan.

"The situation in Helmand changes so often that units have to be very flexible to take over new tactics, techniques, and procedures from previous units or coalition partners," said Nurmoja. "Flexibility and open thinking save lives."

Broyan boasted about the Estonians' professionalism and said there is no question about their capabilities.

"They're good soldiers with good attitudes," Cabaniss agreed from his headquarters at Forward Operating Base Delhi. "I expect very good things from them."

HELMAND PROVINCE, Islamic Republic of Afghanistan – "Estonians!" yells the instructor, "Get into the pit!" A comrade, serving as a makeshift interpreter, prompts two soldiers to step into the ring.

"No punches to the head!"

After the whistle blows, padded fists fly, stopping occasionally when a fighter commits an infraction. The penalty for a foul is 10 pushups.

Six soldiers from the Estonian army completed training in the first level of the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program, Aug. 30.

In the weeks leading up to their testing day, the Estonians completed more than 25 hours of instruction with Gunnery Sgt. Charles R. Stephens, future operations chief with Marine Expeditionary Brigade – Afghanistan and MCMAP black belt instructor-trainer.

With limited English spoken by some of the Estonians, Stephens used a universally understood teaching technique – repetition and hand signals.

"We teach using E-D-I-P," said Stephens, a native of Marietta, Ga. "We explain the technique, we demonstrate it, we imitate it step by step and we let them practice."

Stephens noticed few differences between the Estonians and the Marines, who he is accustomed to teaching. He believes that the Estonians have the proper mental attitude exhibited by soldiers worldwide.

"They've got that killing spirit steeped inside of them," Stephens said. "As far as having that killing mindset, they got it."

Stephens tested the limits of each Estonian soldier, ensuring they all received the proper martial arts training and enhancing their overall fitness level.

"It's up to the instructor to see what fitness level they're at and try to push everybody," Stephens said. "I try putting myself in their position. It would be pretty strange trying to learn from somebody [when] you have to have a translator. I'm impressed with them."

Stephens finishes every class with an exercise instilling solidarity amongst his students, emphasizing unit cohesion.

"Normally we finish with squad sit-ups or squad pushups," Stephens said. "We finish with a team event to bring it back together."

Lessons learned by the Estonians included teamwork, mixed martial arts techniques and physical discipline. The lessons learned will benefit them as they head out for their own missions in Helmand province.

The MCMAP class for the Estonians began while Stephens conducted MCMAP classes for the Marines of MEB-Afghanistan. He started to notice a few Estonian faces hanging around his area of instruction. Each day, the Estonian audience grew.

"I think what was neat," Stephens said, "was just one or two asking to come, so I just made a motion to them and sure enough, the next day, with somebody that could speak English, they asked me if they could come, and I said 'Yeah.'"

From that time, more and more Estonian soldiers came and their enthusiasm piqued the interest of other soldiers. Soon Estonians made up half of Stephens' class.

"It's good," said Estonian army Cpl. Margo Turro, a rifleman with the Estonian Company, International Security Assistance Force. "Somebody spread the word. We came out the first evening and they spoke to us about what they did and then we started to (gain) some interest."

During basic training in the Estonian army, soldiers receive limited instruction in hand-to-hand combat techniques. Their training does not use the same techniques employed by the MCMAP program, according to Turro.

Turro, along with five other Estonian soldiers, passed his tan belt test, Aug. 30. The group received their tan belts and challenge coins from Brig. Gen. Lawrence D. Nicholson, commanding general of MEB-Afghanistan, in a graduation ceremony Sept. 6.

"I'm very proud of your training," Nicholson said. "The enemy has no idea what they're in for."

CAMP TAJI, Iraq " A newly inducted member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization is playing a lead role alongside American troops in securing the future of Iraq.

Although small in numbers, the infantry soldiers from Estonia's STONE Platoon bring added force to the tank crews of the Fort Riley, Kan., based 2nd Battalion, 70th Armor Regiment.

The 34-member platoon from Estonia is a highly-trained volunteer force that performs an infantry mission with the skill and firepower comparable to U.S. Army Rangers, said U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Nicholas E. Wolf, one of two liaisons to the Estonians and a tank crewmember with Company A, 2/70th.

"These guys are first-rate soldiers, and it is as a privilege to be a member of their team," Wolf said.

Wolf works with the Estonians day in and day out, providing communications help with the unit in the field, and acting as a fellow comrade off of it.

"They can't have our communications security alone, so we act as radio-telephone operators in the lowest sense," Wolf said. "We are there to assist them if they don't know how something is done. I can guide them in the right direction."

Wolf stresses that he isn't in charge of the unit but he is always there for the rare occasions when the platoon needs advice.

"The Estonians are fully capable of running their own missions; we just act as liaisons," he said.

The Estonians patrol their own sector and have relieved some of the strain on operational manpower of the American unit.

When a U.S. company-sized mission is to take place, the Estonians are eager to be a part and assist in all facets.

While one section of the platoon may setup a 72-hour observation point to overlook trouble spots for suspicious activity, another will do cordon and searches or act as a quick reaction force to any attacks in the area.

"Having STONE is a huge asset," said Cpt. Johnny M. Casiano, commander, Co. A, 1st Bn., 141st Infantry Reg., Fort Riley, Kan. "They are very professional, and when we need help, they are always there."

Casiano and his Soldiers compliment the armor power of the 2/70th, and the two American units welcome having another platoon of soldiers with the qualifications of the Estonians.

"They give us extra combat power," Casiano said. "They are quiet professionals, and it's been a great experience to be able to have them with us."

Estonian Sergeant 1st Class Jarmo Johkem, a 24-year-old squad leader with STONE Plt., said the opportunity to fight alongside the Americans in the War on Terror has been an experience he won't soon forget.

"This has been a chance of a lifetime," Johkem said. "We train, train, train, and now after five years in the military, I have this great opportunity to utilize the training.

"It is great to work with the Americans and see them in action," he said. "We have a very small military, and to see such a large army at work, we can learn a lot."

Gaining war time experience hasn't come without costs. The unit has lost two soldiers in combat with several wounded since operations in Iraq began in 2003.

Aside from the casualties, the Estonians play a necessary role in the NATO forces alongside the Americans, said Cpt. Ulo Isberg, Estonian media relations officer with Multi-National Corps " Iraq.

"It's important that we are here and continue to do our mission," Isberg said. "The battalion has a long tradition of excellence dating back to 1919, and this opportunity shows that we are full partners with the U.S., and we will back them as a member of NATO."

As a member of the esteemed Estonian Scout's Battalion, STONE Plt. was recently visited by the unit's commander, Lt. Col. Indrek Sirel, on a trip to Camp Taji from Estonia. Sirel was not only there to see his hard-working Estonian soldiers in action, but to honor the American troops they have worked with.

"I didn't even really know about the awards ceremony," said Wolf, who was surprised by his awarding of the Distinguished Service Decoration of the Estonian Defense Forces.

"I thought that was really cool," Wolf said. "I thought I might get a certificate of appreciation, but from what I understand this is quite an achievement, and I'm really honored that they felt enough to give this to me."

Nine other American Soldiers, including Sgt. Brian McDonald, the other Estonian liaison that works with STONE Plt., were awarded medals from Sirel during the brief evening ceremony.

Just a few hours after the awards presentations, McDonald and a handful of Estonian soldiers were braving the midnight chill. The unit rolled out long before dawn to conduct a two-day mission searching a volatile area of Baghdad for weapons and insurgents.

Whether something is found, or it's just a quiet day for the STONE Plt., their presence is undeniable. It may be an air assault mission or eight armed Estonians piling out of the back of their armored vehicles; the Iraqi citizens know them and have come respect them, Wolf said.

"The Estonians feel like chosen ones from their country to support this effort," he said. "They are very proud of their country and what it has achieved, and they continue to want to be a part of this Coalition."
