Cocaine traces at EU parliament
Cocaine powder
The results suggested cocaine was in regular use in the areas tested
Cocaine traces have been found at the European Parliament in an inquiry by one of Germany's main broadcasters.
The Sat-1 channel sent reporters to take 46 swabs from toilets and other public areas of the Brussels buildings. Nearly all tested positive for cocaine.
A European Parliament spokeswoman said cocaine abuse was not a problem among staff working at the buildings.
A professor who analysed the samples said the amounts found were too great to have been carried in on clothing.
"It simply reflects the fact that cocaine was brought in there," Professor Fritz Sorgel of the Institute for Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Research in Nuremberg (IBMP) told the BBC News website.
"The amount was too high and found in too many spots. It shows it was brought in deliberately." .........

If this is your meaning of a scoop then you have a point!

Reporters find cocaine in EU parliament

The Guardian
Significant amounts of cocaine have been found in the European parliament, German undercover reporters claim.
Armed with wet wipes, reporters from the television station Sat 1 polished toilet roll dispensers, door handles and other areas in the Brussels building. Almost all the 46 swabs they took were contaminated with cocaine, with 10 samples containing "significant amounts" of the class A drug.
The European parliament has denied a problem of cocaine use among members and staff. But a scientist who analysed the swabs last night urged a thorough inquiry.
Five years ago, the same television station tested the German parliament, where a huge scandal erupted after cocaine in amounts of one or two micrograms was discovered.
In the European parliament, however, 10 of the swabs were smeared with between 20 and 30 micrograms.
Professor Fritz Sorgel of the Institute for Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Research in Nuremberg told the Guardian: "I was surprised to find such significant quantities on the swabs. This proves substantial amounts of cocaine are being used in the European parliament building.
"The drugs did not fly through the window and were not found in all areas of the building. This is not something which should be overlooked.
"It needs to be investigated."
So far, nobody has dared to suggest that European politicians could be the culprits.
Ulrich Meyer, producer of the Sat 1 show AKTE 05, said: "We understand that the European parliament building is open to all members of the public. We do not wish to point our fingers at any individuals or professional groups."
But he added that cocaine consumption was a larger problem than many politicians were willing to believe.
A European parliament spokeswoman, Marjory van den Broeke, dismissed the findings, claiming that traces of cocaine could be found in most public buildings. "It is not a problem at all," she said.
Prof Sorgel recently tested for traces of cocaine at five German secondary schools. Insignificant amounts of the drug were found at only two of the sites. "This," he said, "proves that cocaine is not everywhere in society."
When AKTE's reporters took samples from toilets in the German parliament, traces of cocaine were found in 22 of the 28 wipes.
The Berlin judiciary refused to conduct an investigation, claiming that the parliament was open to the public, and because there was no reason to suspect anybody in particular.
Sat 1's reporters carried out the tests at the Strasbourg site without the consent or knowledge of staff at the European parliament.

Cocaine use regular in MEPs' toilets
15.07.2005 - 09:44 CET | By Lisbeth Kirk Systematic controls of 46 toilets in the European Parliament have revealed traces of cocaine, according to German TV magazine AKTE 05 - five years after the same reporters found cocaine traces in the German parliament.
The quantities found in MEPs' toilets imply regular use, according to the German TV show revealing the findings last night (14 July).
"Some of the quantities found there would have caused a police drug dog to respond", said pharmacologist Professor Fritz Sorgel from the Institute for Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Research in Nuremberg (IBMP), who analysed the samples.
In total, 41 of the 46 surface swabs taken at European Parliament buildings A to H in Brussels contained traces of the highly-addictive drug.
In one room the concentration was so high that there was only one possible explanation - cocaine had been consumed there just before the sample was taken.
"I’m sure a systematic control would unveil cocaine everywhere", said Professor Sorgel to Spiegel Online.

Wipes were labelled with the building name, the storey and a room number
"Therefore I’m not at all surprised cocaine has been found in the European Parliament".
Producer and moderator of AKTE 05 Ulrich Meyer said that consumption of cocaine is a problem which pervades all of society, a problem that is "bigger than many politicians are willing to believe".
"We do not wish to point our fingers at any individuals or professional groups", he said, pointing out that the vast and complex European Parliament building is widely accessible to outside visitors.

I can't think of anything less authentic than SAT1 finding cocaine in a public building.
Like I said, a few years ago they tried to make up a scandal about cocaine addicted german politicians. They said they found cocaine in a bathroom in the Reichstag. Strangely enough, nobody was interested because the cocaine came from public bathrooms, which are used by everyone, including journalists, visitors etc.
Now they did the same in the EU-Parliarment. Nice Try
Traces of cocaine can be found in virtually every public restroom and banknote in the western hemnisphere...
What a surprise. :cantbeli:
