Rafael, General Dynamics win US Army reactive armor order
The order for armor for Bradley Fighting Vehicle Systems is worth $37.8 million.
Michal Raveh 18 Jul 05 17:43
Rafael Armament Development Authority and General Dynamics (NYSE: GD) have won an order worth $37.8 million from the US Army to supply reactive armor for M2 and M3 Bradley Fighting Vehicle Systems. Half the amount will go to Rafael. This is a follow-on order to an order made in November for Bradley vehicles in Iraq.
The armor protects those riding in the vehicle from anti-tank fire. The armor consists of tiles that contain explosives. The explosives detonate when hit by a rocket or missile, preventing the weapons from penetrating into the vehicle.
Rafael's VP marketing Dr. Eitan Yudilevich said, "Our collaboration with General Dynamics is achieving results, and will be expanded to other fields.
The technology will also be applied to the IDF's M-113 Zelda armored personnel carrier.

Dont think i'ts going to help much.
SAAB has already shown how to easily defeat reactive armour.
Other manufacturers will create simmilar systems wery fast.
The only thing this will help against is when fighting against oponents with outdated equipment.

I love posts like this. Just try and THINK for a second. Seriously.

EURENCO also makes ERA, Dynamit Nobel too but much more advanced:

http://www.defense-update.com/products/c/clara.htm
The russians here still insist that era is exclusively russian and the russian ERA is the best in the world. Rafael got samples of Contact 5 from germany after reunification and were able to improve the design in many regards.
Only very few vehicles in the russian army are fitted with ERA and even less with other actie or passive defenses.

The Russians are actually the one and only who produces ERA capable of defeating Kinetic projectiles, Contact 5 is a heavy ERA of this category and is not suited for APCs / IFVs.
Russian ERAs like the Contact are not better or worse than other ERAs, they’re of a different category.

And those "other manufacturers" are the same Palestinian militants who 'manufacture' those marvels of modern weaponry, the Qassam rocket, in their basements? Or will SAAB be supplying those militants too?
The only thing this will help against is when fighting against oponents with outdated equipment.
Who do you think we're fighting? The USA? We're fighting people who make much of their weaponry in bedrooms and basements out of often dated and derelict materials they find in supply dumps.

Until each infantry group is fitted with a Bill 2 type missile, even if the US was fighting Sweden this kind of armour would be useful. Most spread weapons are rocket launchers like AT4, Carl Gustav, Panzerfaust and RPG 7… that is exactly what is meant to be defeated by these ERAs.

and the new wersions of AT4 ect will have the same capability as the bil2.
I predict that in about 4-5 years large parts of the world will have weapons capable of ignoring that type of armor. and in another 2-3 years it will have spread to a lot of the worlds "hot spots" (where they are then) so this armor will only be of practical use for 6-8 years.
now a second question you should ask is, what the weight of the extra armor is ? because when sweden upgraded the armor of our cv90's we ran into speed and clutch problems because of higer weights.
and a unmoving APC is a dead APC.
