18x-----SF recruit. Basic, Airborne, SFAS. if you fail SFAS, you just get thrown into the 82nd, if not, you go on to go through the Q course and other things, and earn your green hat and long tab.

Wow man, good luck with that. That stuff will kick your ass. You got a while to get in shape though and I would recomend it. Just remember your not an 18x till you get through all the training. I dont want to bash your bonus, but thats only 10,000 more then what I got when I enlisted in the National Guard, pre 9/11 and recuriting shortages. You shoulda played the TO card. And did you ask what happens to your bonus if you wash out?

Last time I talked to the recruiter about the 18x (i decided im not going to do it thoguH) he said if you washed out, you keep your bonus, but..that was the recruiter saying, I'd guess he'd have to look at his contract. But my recruiter is a pretty good guy, and so far havent heard any tall tales.

Congrats! A good friend of mine took the 18x contract and made it all the way through. He just finished up SERE. Remember also, before you go to SFAS, you have to go through another 30 day course called SOPC at Bragg, althought my friend did this at Benning for some reason.

My best friend, whom is at the sandbox now got a 17,000 bonus for 18x. When he got to basic he decided to get that dropped and was offered a chance to try out for Ranger Rgt, which he did and made it. He kept his orignial bonus.

i was an 18x recruit about 2 years ago, keyword-"was", i got hurt in airborne school and got a worldwide assignment, but i'm happy with where i'm at now and i got to go back and get my wings. i didn't think they were doing the whole off the streets sf thing anymore. but if they are doing the sopc thing, thats cool, sopc will smoke the ever living **** out of you from what i've heard and make selection a breeze, it's typically phase 2 that gets young guys. as far as the bonus thing goes, its an enlistment bonus, so even if you get dropped anywhere in the training, you'll still get it once you get to your first unit. as far as learning army **** before you're even in, i wouldn't, it's a waste of time, they'll teach you everything you need to know. spend your time getting in shape, drinking beer, and re-populating the world.

5kman and others - Correct me if I'm wrong but I did not think you could even get to the Q course unless your and e-4 or above. I was in 10th group back in the early 90's so things must of changed since then.

So it's possible to enlist in the army and get tabbed without spending anytime with a regular Army unit?

SKman,

congrats for stepping up and going for it.

Here is a site that is populated & run by no BS Army SF

http://www.professionalsoldiers.com/forums/index.php

Join the group and you can learn quite a bit. Though be forewarned.

1. ALWAYS SHOW RESPECT WHEN POSTING. PERIOD.

2. While no question is stupid, think before asking and ask intelligently.

3. Be concise and to the point; though don't be afraid to share important details.

4. Read the forum rules prior to your first posting.

Pretty much EVERYONE on the forums are current or past operators and don't take kindly to BS. ie; no Pogs, REMF's or wannabes. They are quick to no-go anyone who fails to show proper respect to other members.

I promise you'll wind up meeting members while going through your training.

Good Luck!

In a nutshell mate yes, that's correct,it'll take about 2 years to get into the Team room, but yep.......you'll get there without ever having any regular Army time!!

DO NOT QUIT.... thats pretty much what it all comes down to, NOTHING YOU DO WILL BE SO DEMANDING THAT YOU NEED TO QUIT, no amount of pain, time away from family.... or any other excuse is worth loseing the chance for a lifetime of pride. Trust me, i have been down the road you are about to go down. And after the long dark tunnel, its definitely a nice bright light at the end.

Just don't be one of the hundreds, if not thousands of foolish 18x that join not realizing what you are getting into too.... you signed the dotted line, its time to freaken cowboy the hell up..... and go for broke. Run outside, workout..... whatever it takes. Be in such good shape that you finish every training session feeling unimpressed.... thats the ticket. Anything remotely book related the instructers will help you get by.... so its basically all in your court now. Its not the army's job to prepare your body, only to give you needed skills you may not know (land nav... etc)

sorry for the sermon and caps.... it just means a freaken lot to me.

Thanks everyone for the encouragement and links. My experience at meps was wonderful aside from the long ass wait times. I was seriously waiting more than 2 hours just to get the ball rolling. Add another misc. 1 1/2 hours + physical(regular&Airborne) = out to around 8 hours(I know the G.I Jane script like the back of my hand). And I still have to go back and take the DLAB :| . They knew what I wanted(18x) because I reserved the job prior to going. I didnt get offered anything or had another mos pushed on me. Nothing like the horror storys you hear. This was all at the meps in Springfield,Mass nice place. Im gunna bust my ass like never before, I dont wanna turn into one of those washout statistics!

Bend over a stick your finger in your butt, look a the chart, get stuck with some needles, tough your toes - now stand around naked/in your underpants for half a day - pretty much like that.

Start road marching and figuring out how to land nav now, or else I'll be seeing you in the Eighty Duce some time at the end of next year.

Yep :|. The Airborne part is like 20 questions added on to the regular physical.

Did you have to do the "make the wierd hand-signs" and duck walk parts?
