I saw this question tested in Guns magazine. Which is a better combat scope, the ELCAN or the ACOG? They favored the ELCAN, though they said it was as heavy as a brick, yet as durable as one. From what I understand, the ACOG scope is used by U.S. special forces on their M-16's amd M4's. The ELCAN is used by the Canadian army. If any of you have experience with either site, which I don't have, I would greatly appreciate anything you guys offer on the subject. p-)
For what it's worth the ACOG is the sexier piece of kit :D
Not that I've tried either...

ACOG wins here
-told by Kevin B.
ELCAN only got contract because Diemaco(manufacturer of
C7 and C8 etc.) likes to sell their rifles with ELCAN.
(apparently, they now have a deal with EOTECH)
-Many were against ELCAN being issued.
once the Canadian troops underwent combats in Afhgan,
no one wanted to use it, some ended up using ACOGs with
their own money.
it also gets caked around elevation and windage drums.
TA31 really is the hot stuff right now (issued to US Marines now)
(or TA11 is very good too)
it's basically TA01 NSN with illuminated reticle with
fiber optic light gathering device.
it can be used as a scope with single eyes open, and
when using BAC (both eyes open), the magnified picture
becomes reasonably insignificant and only see the red doughnut.
so you can use it like a reflex sight.
Well, that DOES sound good. Where can I find out more?
So, I went web surfing to find this and the first pic I see is of a Trijicon ACOG reminding me of one thing I really like about it; it has back up iron sights mounted on top. Redundancy can be really nice, especially if it's redundancy of the simple, sturdy, low weight type.

Whats the SUSAT like compared to the ACOG and Elcan?
From what I've picked up its a very good sighting system (much better than the rifle its on ;) [the L85A1/2 and L86A1/2]).

I haven't read too many reviews on th SUSAT but early versions seem to have suffered from fogging(of course, anything new has bugs). There was a review of the L85A1 rifle in the Feb.96 SWAT and the author seems to have been impressed with the clarity and toughness of the scope. Just like the C79 the windage and elevation are external so its a safe bet it has the same problems with dirt.
I find it funny that some Canadian troops replaced their C79s with ACOGS because I noticed that the 101st airborne troopers seem to have fitted their M249s with Elcans.
buy the way, heres a good review on the C79 and the main complaint is again the external adjustments:

I think I've only read positive, indeed raving things, about the SUSAT. The Swedes put it on their AK5/FNCs. Can't be all that bad.

Notorious, can you confirm which issue of Guns Magazine that article appeared in? I saw it too, but missed picking it up - it was either March (likely) or February (possible?). I may actually order a back-issue.
Why? Because, they printed a representation of each reticle and I'm gathering examples while trying to mod it correctly in Delta Force 2 and TFD for the PC. Curiously, the Trijicon website AND Bushmaster catalog both have differing representations as well. All appear authentic and all are labeled for the TA01NSN 4x32 milspec model.
