View Full Version : Hip hop suggestions?

So recently I've heard a bit of hip hop that ain't bad, and I'm looking for more good stuff (up until recently, I listened to pretty much only hard rock and electronica). But I've had mixed luck really finding hip-hop I like. And I was looking for some suggestions. This is what I already have, and what I think of it:
Lauryn Hill, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. This BLEW MY MIND. Hill is massively overtalented at singing, rapping, and writing good lyrics. Ten out of ten, and I don't say that about many albums.
Outkast, Stankonia. I had heard a couple songs off of this and really liked those (B.O.B., Ms. Jackson), and there were a few more tracks that I dig, but the album overall doesn't move me. I find myself putting it in, listening to a couple of my favorite songs, and putting something else on.
Missy Elliot, This is Not a Test!. I just got this today, so I've only listened to it about once through, but I've got mixed feelings so far. "Pass that Dutch" and "Wake Up" have some pretty cool rhythms, and the rest of the album is "not bad," but it doesn't totally blow me away either. Still more to my liking than Outkast, though.
Black Eyed Peas, Elephunk. Okay, this isn't exclusively hip-hop, but I'm not sure what else it would be. So far I'm liking it a lot, though I'm not through listening to it all the way. The anthemic "Where is the Love" blows my mind though. "Hey Mama" and "Shut Up" are wicked cool, too.
So does anyone know of something else out there I should give a listen to?
And a final disclaimer about lyrics: I'm not interested buying gangsta-wannabe stuff about how cool the guy's shoes are, and how cool his car is, and how he's gonna cap his ex-girlfriend, and so on. And I'm not interested in anything racist or bigoted. And I'm not interested in anything totally anti-American (I'm not bothered by the Black Eyed Peas' calls for world peace, which include some complaints against the War on Terrorism, but I am bothered by Rage Against the Machine, which basically roots for the other side).

Stick to your hard rock! The reason I say this is because although hip hop is what I grew up with (I live in Harlem, New York City) in the innercity it started to become another education that opposed my parents parenting. It tought me to join a gang, (former latin king) hate white, disrespect wemen and to become a degenerate towards private property and lack respect for my fellow New Yorker. I snapped out of it real quick after a strong talk with my Dad (tough bastard) and I turned for the better. Lucky for me I was raised with both parents and my short time of rebelling was stoped at its' infancy. I know your like OK? but don't support it, its really a waste of your money and if you have kids they will get into it and it will become your childrens future culture. But it's a free country and im just trying to be a little teacher!
But I do like outcast been a fan for about 5-6 years but just my thoughts...

Jurassic 5 is pretty good...but hip hop and rap is now my thing. Oasis's first album was good.

Outkast is the only rap group I like. Some other songs are okay but Outkast is usually decent.
Something about saying izzle at the end of every word, spending more $ on your rims than the vehicle itself, gold "teef", etc. just don't work

First off, I'm not dismissing your story at all. But right now I'm an unmarried 22-year-old, so I'm old enough to distinguish moral from immoral for myself, and I don't have any kids in my apartment to corrupt ;)
And just for the record, racism and misogyny isn't unique to hip hop. Just look at early Guns n Roses (I really dig their Use Your Illusion stuff though). And some European metal is radically anti-Christian, anti-Jewish, and anti-foreigner. If Nine Inch Nails (one of my favorite bands) is quoted out of context, it sounds like Trent Reznor is advocating rape. You can find ugly messages in any genre...
And at the same time, you shouldn't feel the need to abandon the entire hip-hop genre just because certain hip-hop artists are a bad influence. Just listen to the ones that aren't! You already discovered Outkast. I seriously think you need to pick up Lauryn Hill's The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill and the Black Eyed Peas' Elephunk. Here are the lyrics to one song from each to give you an idea of how un-50-Cent their message is:
"To Zion" by Lauryn Hill (about the birth of her son, Zion)
Unsure of what the balance held
I touched my belly overwhelmed
By what I had been chosen to perform
But then an angel came one day
Told me to kneel down and pray
For unto me a man child would be boren
Woe this crazy circumstance
I knew his life deserved a chance
But everybody told me to be smart
Look at your career, they said
"Lauryn, baby, use your head"
But instead I chose to use my heart
Now the joy of my world is in Zion
Now the joy of my world is in Zion
How beautiful if nothing more
Then to wait at Zion's door
I've never been in love like this before
Now let me pray to keep you from
The perils that will surely come
See life for you, my prince, has just begun
And I thank you for choosing me
To come through unto life to be
A beautiful reflection of his grace
For I know that a gift so great
Is one only God could create
And I'm reminded every time I see your face
That the joy of my world is in Zion
Now the joy of my world is in Zion
Now the joy of my world is in Zion
Now the joy of my world is in Zion
Marching, marching, marching, marching to Zion
Marching, marching, marching
Marching, marching, marching, marching to Zion
Marching
Beautiful, beautiful Zion
"Where is the Love" by the Black Eyed Peas (I don't entirely agree with what they say about the War on Terrorism, but when you look at the song as a whole, their heart is in the right place)
What's wrong with the world, mama
People livin' like they ain't got no mamas
I think the whole world addicted to the drama
Only attracted to things that'll bring you trauma
Overseas, yeah, we try to stop terrorism
But we still got terrorists here livin'
In the USA, the big CIA
The Bloods and The Crips and the KKK
But if you only have love for your own race
Then you only leave space to discriminate
And to discriminate only generates hate
And when you hate then you're bound to get irate, yeah
Badness is what you demonstrate
And that's exactly how a n**** works and operates
N**, you gotta have love just to set it straight
Take control of your mind and meditate
Let your soul gravitate to the love, y'all, y'all
People killin', people dyin'
Children hurt and you hear them cryin'
Can you practice what you preach
And would you turn the other cheek
Father, Father, Father help us
Send us some guidance from above
'Cause people got me, got me questionin'
Where is the love (Love)
Where is the love (The love)
Where is the love (The love)
Where is the love
The love, the love
It just ain't the same, always unchanged
New days are strange, is the world insane
If love and peace is so strong
Why are there pieces of love that don't belong
Nations droppin' bombs
Chemical gasses fillin' lungs of little ones
With the ongoin' sufferin' as the youth die young
So ask yourself is the lovin' really gone
So I could ask myself really what is goin' wrong
In this world that we livin' in people keep on givin'in
Makin' wrong decisions, only visions of them dividends
Not respectin' each other, deny thy brother
A war is goin' on but the reason's undercover
The truth is kept secret, it's swept under the rug
If you never know truth then you never know love
Where's the love, y'all, come on (I don't know)
Where's the truth, y'all, come on (I don't know)
Where's the love, y'all
People killin', people dyin'
Children hurt and you hear them cryin'
Can you practice what you preach
And would you turn the other cheek
Father, Father, Father help us
Send us some guidance from above
'Cause people got me, got me questionin'
Where is the love (Love)
Where is the love (The love)
Where is the love (The love)
Where is the love
The love, the love
I feel the weight of the world on my shoulder
As I'm gettin' older, y'all, people gets colder
Most of us only care about money makin'
Selfishness got us followin' our own direction
Wrong information always shown by the media
Negative images is the main criteria
Infecting the young minds faster than bacteria
Kids act like what they see in the cinema
Yo', whatever happened to the values of humanity
Whatever happened to the fairness in equality
Instead in spreading love we spreading animosity
Lack of understanding, leading lives away from unity
That's the reason why sometimes I'm feelin' under
That's the reason why sometimes I'm feelin' down
There's no wonder why sometimes I'm feelin' under
Gotta keep my faith alive to lovers bound
People killin', people dyin'
Children hurt and you hear them cryin'
Can you practice what you preach
And would you turn the other cheek
Father, Father, Father help us
Send us some guidance from above
'Cause people got me, got me questionin'
Where is the love (Love)
Where is the love (The love)
Where is the love (The love)
Where is the love (The love)
Where is the love (The love)
Where is the love (The love)
Where is the love (The love)

ok dude here is the good stuff:
Dr. Dre - Chronic 2001
Tupac - Changes
50cent - Get Rich and Die Tryin'
Outkast - Speakerboxxx (new album)
Sure it has some 'gangsta' stuff in it but the lyrics/music and stuff are top notch (it's not like 'fo shizzle dizzle' or holidaeee innnnn rofl ). I highly recommend these albums. I've had the Chronic 2001 and Changes albums for over 5 years and I still listen to them regularly.
Hmmmm.....Some of my Fave Groups/artists from the Hip hop Genre!....i don't like that fake gangster music that much. Just smooth beats & clever rhyming
Roots manuva
KRS-One - Anything...but get the retrospective album, its all the hits
De La Soul
A Tribe Called Quest
Scratch Perverts - Badmeaningood (New mix)
Digital Underground
Ice Cube - Ok he's a big racist ****, but his old tunes are good.
Gangstarr - Premo beats are the best
Pete Rock & CL Smooth
Public Enemy
Beastie Boys!
Errm, i'll post up more when i remeber

I have to echo what has been said at least twice in this thread, and advise you go for the Beastie Boys...Beastie Boys Anthology - The Sounds of Science is a good buy for a good cross section of their stuff.
For mindless hip-hop there can be only one, though. House of Pain! :)
House of Pain?!
All they did that was worthwhile was "Jump around"..the rest didn't do anything for me.

I'd suggest the album "Masta Ace - Disposable Arts" ; if you're lookin for some Spanish rap, I'd go for the albums from "Orishas" ("A lo cubano" and "Emigrante"). Nice French rap: Saían Supa Crew, and you might give the Soundtrack "Taxi 3" a try...
