Hey guys, I'd like to purchase a book about US Army Special Forces explaining a Green Beret selection and training. I know quite a bit as far as Navy's BUD/S go, but that's about it. I'm very interested in knowing what a trainee has to go through to become a Green Beret, how long it is, what are the instructors like, what's the culture like etc. you get the point. I'd like to hear from people who know of books like that, thank you.

Why get a book? I mean, there's bound to be SOMETHING around on the internet. Maybe some training diarys from guys that went trough the training...

Actually, I was going to ask Deuterium anyway: got a guy in my unit who went through SFAS about a year ago, and he gave me a pretty good details about exacly what went on there. Now, I don't know if he was actually supposed to do that, since it is not a very publicized selection anyway, but if Deut is fine with it, and anyone wants to hear it, I will gladly tell you what he went through.
By the way, he made through the whole 3 weeks, while people were dropping left and right, but he was "non-select" by the board at the end. He said he fratured his ancle on one of the land nav courses, but didn't want to be dropped or rolled, so he finished it...

Get through recruit training and then your basic school. It seems that all the kids these days want to run before they have even begun to crawl. No books will help you to get through the hell that is gonna come down on you once you make it to selection or Indoc.

Yup...it's not like you're getting fit from reading.
Might be some arm training tho, turning all those pages ;)

Do I believe this guy?? Yeah, he is an E-5, and still had an SF patch and airborne tab because he had a six month train-up with with them. I don't think he is lying.
As for joining, I can go and do the same thing starting tomorrow, except from some of the stuff they did there I know it would take me several months of some hell of a training to get even close to barely making through(and that's just physically)
But he just gave me some good insight, and like I said if anyone wants to hear it, its just some pretty interesting stuff.

All I did was asked about any books that some of you guys might have read, and people are replying back with "why" and trying to question my reason of wanting to read a single book. I didn't know reading a book is such a huge deal, it's my hobby, I'm not trying to get fit from it. I don't remember anywhere saying I need a book that would help me make it through the training, yet Trigger makes it seem like I did. I've read a SEAL book by **** Couch about BUD/S, so I thought I'd read one about SF selection. So chill out people.

You can get it for FREE!
Just ask your recruiter:
USAREC Pam 601-25
PT 31-210-SWCS (or the current like document)
if Duet chooses to relay his personal experiences and knowledge that is one thing, but live by the gouge, die by the gouge. I would only listen to the sources (such as Duet) themselves or the mil.
I think you should go to Camp Mackall and ask them to talk to you about it. Head on down Lamont. Be sure to show up early for the free tours, they fill up quick!!! Try the fishing it is wonderful! Enjoy your trip.
Best of luck!

There's a book called something like "You Want Me To Do What?" and it's about a guy who became a Ranger, then went to Special Forces, and then went through BUD/S to become a SEAL. It's right up your ally :) I haven't read it, btw. Oh...found it, here's a link! http://navyseals.com/community/store/details.cfm?item=10087

I dont know why people are obsessed with Special operations work,i am not undermining the work these guys do but most of them started from somewhere like the regular infantry, why dont you start there,if you think you can hack it then you can move up to SF.Those SF type guys have a very hard job and you have to be top notch to qualify. But i can bet you,you can do a lot of big things in the regular units just as well.I am a bit worried that a lot of people overlook the work the regular units do but instead look at what Sf do.You have to learn to count before you learn to add.

Why start there when there's fast track (18X)available....if you have what it takes. If you can cut the mustard you'll be way ahead of the masses in terms of SF experience and rank compared to guys who spend years in a regular infantry outfit.
If I had to put up with the chicken**** of the regular units (airborne or leg) I'd have left the Army(as many do) after one hitch. I started in SF green as grass and wound up as team sergeant. I can't think of a faster way to learn the ropes than from being surrounded by SF veterans.

This isn't what this post is about, all I asked was for a freaking book since I'm a potential SF applicant, that's all lol. I want to have some insight before I enlist whether it'll be the Navy or the Army, I just don't know which branch to choose yet.

That's easy; just ask yourself if you've got a hard-on for water. If yes, Navy, If no, Army. Easy as that. :P

Okay, I'll try and make it more clear; maritime is basically everything on or in the water... So that includes boats etc. etc. I'm fairly sure all SOF are trained in at least some way for this.
Diving however (at least in the Netherlands) is of course a somewhat different story as it involves a lot of specialised training.. and as far as I know not all SOF operators (except SEALs and FR if I remember correctly) are scuba-trained. That doesn't mean there's no divers in army SF tho, it just means that not all of them are dive-trained.
Right? (I'm not 100% sure since I don't have personal knowledge on it, but it's just the best I can do...feel free to prove me a total know-nothing on US SOF)

When I speak with Army, Navy or Air Force recruiters, they always seem more mature then the Marine recruiters.

the marines have always had that mindset for several reasons. first of all, they have to have that attitude because they are the smallest branch and need to survive (i beleive some congressmen and some presidents over the years have tried to disband the marines) and secondly, they strive to be the best that they can be and always demand more (which also ties into survival).

A quick browse of the US Army's goarmy.com reveals this interesting site:
http://www.goarmy.com/jobs/mos/mos00B.asp
So it seems that even some of the regular US Army forces have some divers in their midst! Whether this is indicative of the Army Special Forces or not, one cannot say. But I suppose if the regular infantry has some diving capability, surely the elite troops have some also?

And believe me he just got out of Boot after 12 weeks of hell and made it you dont think he is proud of that accomplishment? Think alittle more outside the box. the army recruits or whatever they call them, in the army DEP, pt once a month for about a half an hour, and run about a half a mile and do some pushups. we, in the marines DEP, pt once a week or more, for about 1 and a half - 2 hours, and do far more. and why is that? because the marines strive for excellence and to always do more than others. thats what makes the marines so cocky. i don't even know if i am on topic anymore, i am sorryif i am not.

The recruiter actually did his job well he weeded you out before you even got started he knew exactly what he was doing and at 19 he was not a recruiter he was just home on leave. And believe me he just got out of Boot after 12 weeks of hell and made it you dont think he is proud of that accomplishment? Think alittle more outside the box. I will bet you right now no joke that you will never make it to a SpecOps unit, you may make it in someones Infantry but you have the personality that will always have problems.
TP
No you're wrong TP, it was me that weeded HIM out, he started talking to me not vice versa. You are right he was on a leave and I'm sure he was proud of what he has accomplished, or should I say too proud? Disrespecting other branch just because it isn't his branch is immature, and I never got it from the Army guys or the rest. I think there is a code that states you respect everyone in the US military not just your people. As far as your prediction goes of me not making it (funny, this comes from someone that never made it himself), you should know Nostradamus and his opinions is the last thing in my book that I'd worry about.

the army recruits or whatever they call them, in the army DEP, pt once a month for about a half an hour, and run about a half a mile and do some pushups. we, in the marines DEP, pt once a week or more, for about 1 and a half - 2 hours, and do far more. and why is that? because the marines strive for excellence and to always do more than others. thats what makes the marines so cocky. i don't even know if i am on topic anymore, i am sorryif i am not.

It's so easy to make your blood boil TP I love it, you have a hot temper no wonder you spent 10 years as a Marine handing out towels in men's shower room. Maybe I should rephrase myself because I'm not bashing the Marine Corps as a branch, I'm bashing certain Marine individuals that always tend to interupt me when I'm eating my lunch to get me to enlist, and when I tell them I'm signing up for the Navy they start with their lame jokes about U.S. sailors because I don't sign where they need me to sign. I'm critisizing them for being disrespectful towards other US military branches, something like a "defense mechanism", you punch me I'll punch you too, therefore it's you that is a hypocrite here. There is a reason why I didn't join up yet, it's called "high school diploma" in case you don't know, I want to graduate first so in few years I don't become a dumb bitch ass loser like yourself. And where am I arguing which service is better genious? Anyway, I'm really disappointed I wouldn't make it through a Marine woman's boot camp :( I'm happy you made through it though TP :D

papasmerf: I'm going to suggest that you show a little respect to those that have done what you aspire to do. From what I know about TP, you should be asking him questions and trying to learn from him instead of running your suck about how a marine hurt your feelings.
Now, young soldiers are annoying about bashing the other branches, but it just comes from pride in your unit/branch/yourself. It's just what we do, and when it comes time to work together and complete the mission we do. I've lived/trained/operated with numerous foreign and US units. We gave each other a hard time occasionally but there is always mutual respect. We all did the mission and most of us came home alive and unhurt.
The point is if you're complaining b/c a marine was making fun of what you want to do then how will you handle the other similar challenges in military.

Since you like to bet so much Argyll, I suggest we take a trip to Atlantic City someday and gamble a bit. Do you really think what you say about me will have any effect on my personal life or how well I will do in the military? Because from what I see you must really think I give a flying about your opinions or beliefs. The truth is, I don't take people seriously enough on the internet because well, it is internet and there's too many GI phoneys around for me to drop down and push out 50 whenever someone says he's a BTDT. Do I doubt TP being a Marine? Not necessarily, but I just can't take him as serious as I would in real life because he is nothing to me but just a someone behind a keyboard typing messages just like me. I could change my account's name and be a nuclear submarine commander if I played the game well enough for all I know. Trust me I appreciate people like TP and what they do, a US soldier was my hero when my friends' heroes were Batman and Superman. I admire TP for having more ribbons on his chest then spots and for being in pain that I'll never in my life will feel, whatever he does he must be some kind of medal of honor soldier! *JOKE* I never served in a military uniform but that doesn't mean I didn't serve in some way. I serve my city as a volunteer firefighter, right now the only thing that I'm not allowed to do is go inside burning houses but that will all change in a month. I'm a part of something, I work with some awesome people, they are professionals at what they do and I learn a lot from them. They are the people I care to hear from about my attitude and chances in life, not from you or anyone else on this forum Argyll. I don't know if I'll ever be successful, I can do everything perfect but I believe it's up to God and how he will lay down his cards for me, but as of right now it's looking very good which is probably sad news for you p-)
TP, like I said before, I hope you can see where I'm coming from, I too listen to people here where I'm growing up just like you did, and ignore those on the internet, unless you have a good reason why I shouldn't ignore.

that explains why you've been walking on your hands and thinking with the wrong end all these years.
True, but me having my head up my arse cancelled out the effect of that...

There's not too many books out there that go into detail about SFAS or the SFQC. The few that come to my mind are "The Commando's" briefly talks about phase 4 (robin sage), "The Company they Keep" talks briefly about SFAS. There's quite a few video's from the history channel that talk about the SFQC.
As for training, are you referring to the 18X program or the in-service one?
If you can remember the 3 L's you'll do fine. Don't be last, Don't be lost, and Don't be light. Above all be "The Greyman"

Thanks bud. I'm interested in everything that's out there, 18x and the in-service, so I'll checks those books out. I heard about the 3 L's, you can get dropped from the training for always being the first one to sit and the last one to get up, I'll definitely keep that in mind.

seriously? whats up with the freaking blank posts? that just clutters the board. same goes for posts that are just a smiley face. That adds no value to the discussion.
Well it's not like this thread is a prime example of good discussion anyway...
