Я со снайпером. Не поверите, до 84 года ходили с СВТ 43г, потом дали СВД. Этот парень, Меньшиков, не дожил до её получения.

According to the author's quote - snipers were issued SVT model 1943 rifles up until the SVD's were issued in the spring of 1984. The sniper in the picture did not live until its issue :(

лето 1984г, беспрецедентное десантирование посадочным способом на бреющем. Одновременно работали свыше 40 вертолетов.

Summer of 1984, unprecedented drop by low level approach landing. More then 40 helicopters operated at the same time.

там же, один сломался, сел, взлететь не может, а нам уже сматываться.

same place, one of them broke down and can't take off - yet it's time to get going!

I'm no expert but I think thats a Mosin Nagant, not an SVT of any kind.

Roughly translated:
"4th Battallion 11 Platoon 4th Squad. Year of 1982 - Sergei Kozhukovskiy and Nikolai Ostrovskiy in Afganistan.

Sent in by Sergei Kozhukovskiy, whom also annotated the photos."

The source is from Lenigrad (St.Petersburg) military Academy of Kirov - from photo archive submitted by the Alumni... The Battallion and the Plattoon is that of the class - not of the unit with which they served in the Afganistan...

There are more great photos of Alumni - I'll see if I can post more.

Not to mention - the picture is mirrored... Now I'm noticing that the bolt is on the opposite side p-) No explanation on absense of the scope, but the bolt handle is bent to accept it...

Here is another picture with the Mossin-Nagant:

One of the snipers with SVD, another - once again with a scopeless Mossin

Scope could have been taken off and stored. Rocky terrain - dropping a 40 year old scope would have been bad...

are they wearing different style camo because they are from different branches, or was it just normal for not everyone to have the same camo?

They worked with what they got. It's normal for them not to match. The Green and tan camouflage was the KLMK oversuit to be worn over the Afghan Khakis. It gets pretty damn hot here so I could completely understand just wearing the KLMK and undergarments as it is very light and thin. Now KLMK over khakis, you're talking winterwear! The KLMK does get ripped easily since its just disposeable and thin, and the guys who chose not to wear it were probably preserving it for later use by not wearing it.

The reason why they have the Mosin-Nagants instead of the SVD (which at that point was given away to any and every army of a country which the USSR was sponsoring) is that it used to be a practice in the Soviet armed forces (at least for infantry) not to upgrade weapons until a unit was deployed. So these guys were in a paratrooper unit that had not seen combat since the 1960s, and were deployed with the weapons they had at their base, which were later upgraded as the new weapons came in. This is for example what happened to my father's sapper unit, who deployed with AK-47s and then had a switch-out to AK-74s, which if you look at these pictures is also what seems to be happening. This way, some infantry units did not switch to carrying AK-74s until the first Chechen war (and there was a famous story about some marines that carried both AK-47s and AK-74s to confuse the enemy).
