Chicago Publisher Convicted of Spying for Saddam

CHICAGO (*******) - A Palestinian-born newspaper publisher was convicted on Monday of lying to the government and with not registering as a foreign agent while spying on Iraqi exiles on behalf of Saddam Hussein.
After a week-long trial, a federal jury convicted Khaled Dumeisi, 61, of crimes that carry a maximum 10-year prison sentence. He was not charged with stealing U.S. government secrets or with any crimes related to terrorism.

Prosecutors said Dumeisi was paid for his spying on Iraqi dissidents who were living in the United States for the since-deposed Iraqi president; however, he was inspired mostly by his belief that Saddam would help the Palestinians and by his hatred of Israel.

Dumeisi published a small, Arabic-language newspaper that rarely turned a profit.

Among the evidence presented by prosecutors was a videotape of a birthday party to honor Saddam held at the Iraqi United Nations mission in which Dumeisi gave a speech praising the Iraqi leader.
