My brother spent a week underwater on board an Ohio-class missile sub this summer with Navy ROTC...crazy stuff. I can't imagine spending the time down there that career submariners do, but I guess you get a whole new appreciation for fresh air.

Ya thats gotta be one hell of an experience.
I suppose its better than the old days though when you lived in a cloud of diesel fumes and were constantly being sprayed with water and smashing your head in the tiny living spaces :D.

Woah, I went on that sub in Victora BC a number of years ago. Now its down in Seattle (not that specific one, but the same class).
Its really cramped like the WWII German U-boats.

The two u-boat types I´ve seen in real life and been in to (both museum boats) is a Soviet Whiskey Class and a swedish similar size sub from world war 2. The difference was astounding. The swedish was like a space ship in comparison despite that it was older. The Soviet one was so small inside, and primitive, must have been a real horror to have been drafted to be a crew in one of those.

Whiskey-class
One of these Whiskey-class subs on its way to Poland to be scrapped stranded on swedish territorial water in 1981. This was a huge scandal in its days, in the midst of the cold war. Even to this day swedish media claims that was carrying nuclear weapons, just looking at the size says what bull**** that claim is :)

Just wanted to point out that the frigate in the foreground (F101) is not a Perry class. Its actually a Spanish AEGIS destroyer I think its called Alvario de Bazan, but I may be wrong.
Also, MolliG, or anyone else for that matter, when was HMS Torbay decommisioned? I ask you in particular since you posted the pic.

yes, it's the same sub (except for the silent drive thingie) and AFAIK, they are still in the Russian Naval inventory. Whether or not they still sail is probably more a question of economics than naval strategy. They (I think there's like 8 of them- could be wrong) are the largest submarines currently in service.

Just to touch some more on the USS Constitution, it was commisioned in 1797, fought in the war of 1812, and is still commisioned today as well as sailworthy. If I'm not mistaken, its home port is Boston, Massachussetts.

That is exactly what I thought too when I saw this picture but the guy who served on one of those when it was almost new says it looked just like that and it is pretty normal for the in between hulls space due to the pressure (they dived down to 390 meters ~ 1300 feet but he says that it can go even deeper) and salt water.
So pretty much it's like most russian hardware - it may not look pretty but it is reliable and it works.
He also said that amount of space inside and the living conditions are simply unparalleled to any other Soviet/Russian sub.
