There is probably nothing “with the Boy Scouts lately.” It is just what the news media chooses to focus on. One incident happens (i.e. those Scout Masters getting struck by lighting) and the news media starts looking for other incidents. Young Mountain Dew chugging kids suffer heatstroke during a July gathering, Craziness! It makes things seem more dramatic when there appears to be a trend. Had these incidents been separated by a month or so, CNN, Fox, pick your flavor, never would have reported the later two happenings.
Remember when "all those people" were getting attacked by sharks in Florida. I'm no expert, but I'd bet people get bit by sharks more than we hear about in the national news.

God hates boy scouts.

Yea, I think that it has become painfully obvious that these BoyScouts must be supervised by "real" adults, as opposed to "Scout Masters"...It is quite obvious that these "masters" realy haven't mastered anything, really it is quite the opposite. Their lack of attention to detail/safety/common sense appears to have gotten themselves and their scouts, killed. That observation is based soldely on news/internet reports, so if it is inaccurate, I apologize & please correct me. I just think from now on it is clear that "real" adults NEED to be doing supervising to prevent further tragedies that were, honestly, preventable.

I found a newspaper article that said the following:
"...more than 300 Scouts suffered fatigue, lightheadedness and dehydration."
You have to take into acount there are 31,700 youth (http://www.bsajamboree.org/news/index.php ) attending the Jamboree. That works out to be under a 10th of a percent. Take all those kids, add in the weather as of late and you are bound to have some heat injuries.

so far at the jamboree 1 died of heartattack, 4 or 5 from lightning and (the paper said 300 but i heard it was more like 1000) have had heatstroke and thats just from the jamboree!

It was hot as fruck on the East coast this past week. They should have just cancelled the damn thing.
Yeah, what genius scheduled their meet at Fort Bragg, NC, in late July? I could have told you this would happen. Might as well have held it in Death Valley, CA--would have at least avoided the lightning and powerlines, and sweat actually evaporates in Death Valley... :|

that is bull****, their insturcotrs should know better. If from day one army it is pounded into guys to drink atleast 4 litres a day, you would think they would be doing it for these kids - dehydration is the biggest killer.

yah apparently they called out the base medical staff (it took place at Bragg) and there were all these soldiers helping out. (BTW ANY PICS??) anyways this **** happened right when legislators where questioning whether to allow boy scouts to have activities on military installations. I bet you this would effect the decision considering what a waste of time it was for those soldiers to have to come out and help the kids and ****.

Extremely innacturate, like any organization of this size (which there are very few of..), there are good folks and bad folks, personally, i have never came across a scoutmaster who i thought was reckless or unfit to be a "real" adult, though i'm sure they're out there. However, sometimes accidents are just accidents. Though I agree on what was said about heatstroke, frankly, it was the scout's own damn fault who got it, because in scouts every single outdoor merit badge's first requirement is "Show that you know first aid for injuries or illnesses that could occur while *insert whichever activity*, including hypothermia, heatstroke, heat exhaustion, frostbite, dehydration, sunburn,....." and that is drilled into your head in scouts. I can't tell you how many times i've heard the phrase "The best way to treat it is to prevent it." And at every summer camp, weekend trip, high adventure, i've heard hundreds of times to make sure i drank enough water. Some people just don't listen, and that's what it comes down to.
I just got back, *today*, from a week in Quetico provincal park in Canada canoeing, for my troops' high adventure. All the scouts and adults came back safe and sound, except for some bruises and scrapes maybe. So don't try and label every single Scout leader as some irresponsible loon, especially so, since you've never been involved with scouts at all, and are basing you're statement only on the news and internet. And i can't speak for anyone else, but I personally take offense from it.

I'm sorry, the Scouts are not the Army. You can't pound them. Scouts don't sign a binding contract.
P.S. The event didn't take place at Bragg. I have seen no Scouts on post.
If you look at the National Jamboree's website you'll see it took place at Fort A.P. Hill, Bowling Green, Virginia.

I got my Rifle Marksmanship Merit Badge (this was in 1992, when I was 13) using an AR-15.
Not all Troops are created equal. Some local Councils freak out every time a Scout goes for a firearms badge. YMMV.
Scouting should be more paramilitary, like God and Baden-Powell intended!

Kids will do what kids will do. A Scoutmaster is usually a parent of one of the scouts. They are required to look after several kids who are not there own. You try making someone else’s 13-18 year old child do something they don’t want to do.
Also…throwing the "Chief" in there doesn't make your comment any more convincing... Buddy.

That's an M1 Carbine, not a Mini 14. And judging by the magazine, and the ammo just lying about disorganized, that's probably not a boy scout. No weapon a scout is allowed to shoot is allowed to have more than one round loaded into it at a time, ergo, no magazines, no clips, etc etc, and all the scout run shooting ranges are crazy safe and organized.
I'm not a scout master but I do instruct youth firearm classes and scouts several times a year on firearms use (for their rifle badge) at my range. We bought a dozen bolt action .22cal CZ model 452 rifles for this purpose.
http://www.lemongrovegunclub.com/photos/NRAFamily2005/089.jpg
Kids are allowed 1 magazine (5rds) at a time and each scout has an adult instructor with them on the firing line.
http://www.lemongrovegunclub.com/photos/NRAFamily2005/093.jpg
We stress safety to the extreme. Older kids that feel comfortable on the range are allowed to shoot larger weapons, again with one on one instruction after completion of the basic class. These include AR15, M1 carbine, SKS, M1 garand, FAL (pic below),
http://www.thekaiserworks.com/type4/blk4m.jpg
and various shotguns and pistols. We have never had an accident 25 years of these classes because of the close supervision.
Other than the close supervision of firearm instruction, it stands to reason that if you take a large group of children into the outdoors, statisticly, they are more ****e to accidents than say a child who sits indoor all day playing video games. Who will ultimately be the healthier child? The anti-social gamer or the child out learning land navigation in the woods? The child with the playstation or the children using teamwork to make a shelter or climb an obsticle? There are risks in life that we try to minimize, but short of locking a child away indoors their whole life, skinned knees, a broken bone, and poison ivy should go hand in hand with childhood.
Now, lightning strikes and the like are horrible and there may be some adult negligence involved, who knows?
But the real reason why these events are publicized so negatively about the scouts is everything the scout is taught to aspire to: loyalty, honor, reverence, discipline, manners, love of country... is hated and vilified by the dominant leftist/liberal media culture. So the scouts are mocked. Even though I was never a scout as a child, I respect their message and mission and see it as vital.

I don't think the disagreement is with the program in general. We had record high's in temp. and humidity on the East coast. And it seems that the organizers weren't prepared for that. Why? I think it's a great program and teaches all of the necessities that the left is trying to weed out of our youngsters. Keep up the great work!
