GREETINGS FROM SEAL TEAM 2 IN IRAQ!

Actually now tha tI already posted, any reason why they are still using the shortened M60 as opposed to an M240 variant? I can undersand why they would want the 7.62 of the platform to increase the squad's firepower, but I'm curious if there is a reason why they haven't updated to the M240, or if it is just funding.

Yeah, it's a re-post, but worthy for sure. I recognize a couple of those dudes from a picture of a SEAL team in Bagdad. A women who I work with son is an ex-seal (actually he's a SEAL pup) and these dudes are in that picture. I recognize the big guy on the left....

Well that's kinda strange for an elite fighting unit such as the SEAL's don't you think?

Maybe it's lighter and shorter thatn the M240? I am pretty sure they are the same as the Mag58 (waits for argument on correct name). If so then I would say that it is more likely the reason as opposed to funding.

They were decommisioned after WWII and became the U.S. Navy SEALs in 1961
The first SEAL teams were created in the early '60s, and the UDTs lived on until they were decom'd in 1983. The existence of the two units overlapped. The NCDUs and Scouts and Raider teams were decom'd after WWII, with the UDTs and SEAL teams taking over their roles.

Relaxed grooming standards...
Enable operators to better blend in with civilians if need arises. The logic goes "its easier to shave it than grow it... when the need arises.
It is also a sign of masculinity it Muslim countrys. Therefore they need the beardage to be taken seriously as opposed to being batty boys.

Just to add a little info to that, the decommissioned UDTs either became SEAL teams or SDV Teams. Both UDT's and SEALs served in Vietnam.
Some additional info on the UDTs. In addition to bech recon, and demo missions, some of the UDTs were tasked with opeating the SDVs (Swimmer - now SEAL - Delivery Vehicles), or trained in the use of SADM (Small Atomic Demolitions Munition). The yalso stood by to conduct rescues everytime the US made manned space launch, and did some very risky wire tap operations during the cold war.

HUH. That doesn't make sense. How is a "ex SEAL" a "SEAL pup"?

No it's because he has to be able to wear the most horribly coloured, mirror-like-reflecting Oakley's. ;)
But seriously, what if you're at the frontline, or in their case probably behind enemy lines and this guy loses/damages his glasses. What will you do, ask for a re-supply? I don't think so.

Some of the guys get prescription goggles that would take a RPG to break (maybe an exaggeration there).
Plus, the pricks shouldn't lose or break their glasses! Otherwise they'll cop the biggest ribbing from the blokes for the rest of their career!

You're right, they shouldn't, but **** happens. Ever had to take care of an egg during a field exercise? Well, it needs a lot of attention, therefore it's a liability.
Most blokes normally take two pairs when they go bush mate.
Also it's not as if they break easily is it? I am sure they are stronger than an egg too

Students can enter BUD/S with at most, 20/40 in one eye and 20/70 in the other. There's nothing wrong with a SEAL having glasses for a little correction.

Facial hair, especially in the middle east, is a sign of manhood. The Mujahadeen (Northern Alliance, Afghanis, etc) won't listen to, nor respect, a soldier who is incapable of growing facial hair. They view it as a sign of his maturity. IF you can grow a beard you're a man.

The 240 was looked at, and is used in vehical ops or base protection, but it's to heavy for our primary mission. Besides the Mk48 is taking the place of the Mk-43, (M-60).
The Mk-48 had some teething problems, so it took a while to get out.

Robbie, relax man.
The US military has no policy against wearing glasses for ground units. Even elite units like the Rangers and the SEALs don't have a real problem with it. As a Ranger you'll get those nice big army-glasses which can't be broken.
For the non-dutchies who think Robbie's behaviour is strange; In the Royal Netherlands Marine Corps it's not allowed to wear glasses. Everybody is required to have (near) perfect eyesight. That's the reason why poor guys like myself need to have eye-surgery before we can apply for a job as Marine.
So for a Dutch Marine it seems strange that you are allowed to wear glasses as a SEAL.

Certain eye surgeries, (such as Lasik) are disqualifiers for passing the dive physicals. Eye glasses in the teams are not common, but it's not a big deal either. Team guys that wear glasses get those bullet proof Amry versions you see Rangers wear from time to time, but it's a personal thing. Your eyesight still needs to be good enough to see without them and still be able to function.

A role that has been since taken over by USAF Pararescuemen. I can't remember if it was SEAL or UDT frogs who did recovery missions for the Apollo missions in the '60s and '70s. NASA also selected from the frog ranks to conduct human physical limits testing for the early space program.

Why does it disqualify you? I thought lasik (performed properly) would give you perfect 20/20 vision? What's wrong with that?
Lasik surgeries can create problems when the eyeball is put under pressure because it consists in part of tiny slits in the eye surface. At depths, it can cause the eyeball to warp. That's why Lasik is also a disqualifier for jet pilots. Atmospheric pressure can have adverse effects on it.
Matchanu, correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the requirement is no worse than 20/40 in one eye, no worse than 20/70 in the other eye, both have to be correctable to 20/20.

I'm not possitive on the other part, it sounds right, but I'd have to check with the NSWC regs on that to be certain.

The Mk-43 was accepted in to NSW service around 1996. It basically an M-60 with some modifications to make it lighter and more in tune with NSW missions. The Mk-48 is a varient of the Mk-46. The Mk-46 is a 5.56 belt fed atuomatic weapon modified by Crane for NSW. The Mk-48 is a 7.62 version of the Mk-46. Essensially it's the same weapon.
I have heard recently that it's in use and kicks serious ass.

I post this only as ARSOF (I dont know about others), as you may be aware, could rcv PRK on the G-dime. Lacking attention to detail I posted as if they are the same, they are not.
I just figured you guys deserved some added surgical benefit to boot. I mean who couldn't use a pair of ****?
Does refractive surgery also affect dive status regardless of procedure? I would assume the flap of the Lasik would be the problem.
just curious.

Honestly I don't know. I have 20/20 and so have just about everyone else I knew in the teams. Some guys wore glasses but never got the surgery. I found out about the Lasik thing only recently.
If you really want to find out, I'd go over to SOCNET and ask on the NSW forums.
