Better yet, WHY?

Only reason I could see is an environmental one, similar to the KRS being used by Finland when they are out doing ops in the hills.

The silencer is based at WTD in Meppen. WTD = Wehrtechnische Dienststelle which is a German Army proving-ground. And cause Germany is not as big as e.g. the USA, this proving ground is not too far away from housing areas which is the main-reason for the "silenced" M109...

So how does it work? What if the cannon needs to be moved in order to adjust fire, how do you move the "silencer"?

Jack Mehoff

Look like that silencer can only aim in one direction

This is not used for combat. They use it to fire weapons on testing grounds that are in close proximity to residential and comercial areas so that the sound of cannon fire is not disturbing to the surrounding area.
