It's a cultural thing the way I understand it. The Afghanis don't really respect clean-shaven guys...the SF guys needed a beard for the locals to even listen to them. I guess the more the better.

The Afghan mujhaideen(spellcheck?) believe that the bigger the beard the more authority you have. SF also grew beards the first 6-8 months of the war to blend in better with the locals so if there were Taliban around they had to get close to actually notice they were Americans. Read Robin Moore's "The Hunt For Bin Laden" if you want more info, great book.

Some of 5th Group had beards before EF, many began immediately after 9/11. Some were already deployed in the "Stans".

Afghans believe that real men shouldn't shave their beards... so if you are an adult and you don't have a beard, you are a woman.
