View Full Version : Who here would go to Iraq?

And not in some Special Operations fantasy role either. Get real.

Who would go and stand at checkpoints, inspect vehicles, patrol hostile areas etc......Who here would be willing to go and risk their life for the "liberation"

Dalleer

Well, if I'd be in the US armed forces it'd do it of course.

And not have a doubt for a second.

Why? because it would be my job.

mustamato
01-14-2004, 07:10 PM
I would. Because of the adventure and the experience I would gain of it. And because I would hopefully get the chance to help people. Not because of... "Bush and patriotism" and not because of "the war on terrorism". But if I would kill a innocent iraqi civilian I would have nigthmares for the rest of my life. So I would keep the safety on...

Sweden is sending troops to Liberia soon. I would have liked to be one of them. :| But they are there as UN (obviously).

They will amongst other have Combat Vehicle 90C

If I was part of the Norwegian engineering battalion, I'd go in a heart beat.

The Desert Vikings are down there to rebuild the infrastructure, and I'd love to help.

Well, I already know for a fact that I'll be going in another 2 years once I complete my college education. I truly do believe that America and her allies are going to make a difference in that country which will eventually lead to a turn around in the entire region.

I've told everyone at work that I'd be more than happy to go to Iraq - as long as I can kick doors down. Heck I'll even take my own firearms (god knows the AF doesn't issue the crap I've bought)

By way of my job, all I've done is sit behind multiple locked gates, in dark AC'd structures... I'd like to do something 'tangible'

Sorry to hear that

Thanks vance.

Ya see i had my knee crushed severely in a footballing incident. i fell, twisted it, then had a 300 pound tackle crash on it. this was about 5 years back. Its healed, i can walk, i can run and stuff. I got some screws in it. But there is pretty much no way i could run for an extended time or carry a heavy load, both of which would be required of me if i was in the forces.

I might still do something. I know that night managing a grocery store isnt something i want to spend my life doing. I rather serve in some way or another. Im thinking of taking civil service exams and either getting involved with the rescue squad or becomming an officer of the law.

7-11 night shift in Baghdad anyone? The Kalashnikov and three clips come with the uniform.

well ****, the 7-11's out here come with a uniform and your choice of mac ten or a shotgun. the 7-11 where i grew up has had the atm pulled out of it by a truck with a chain, been sprayed with bullets when a gang member retaliated on the clerk who was gang affiliated, has had cut animal parts thrown at it by a angry cult member and at one point the owners had to shut it down because no one would work there whatsoever. after splitting to a better neighborhood i always wonder what came of it.

id go to iraq in a sec. i hate moving heavy boxes all day. did it at my last job, wasnt fun. then again i guess id have a lot less to lose over some with really good paying jobs. gate guard? perimeter patrol? something else to eat other than maruchan ramen and hot dogs? **** yeah. id toss sales in a sec.

Kinda pointless to ask. If you've enlisted, you've already said this...

I, (your name), do solemly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed overme, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God.

I and many others joined the military to give to back to our country for the way of life that our country has afforded us and our families. If that is what I'm tasked to do, then I'll do it.

BTW, I do want to go to do my part. I just need to PCS into an AEF base.

Hey, um...what about....other places. Don't forget, this is the war that is probably not gonna end in our lifetimes, remember? This is the LONG HAUL, make no mistake. Five years for the Second World War..Vietnam, the ten thousand day war...This one is, unfortunately, going to eclipse them. Sad, but true. Don't break out the ration books and Draft cards just yet, but this sorry business is not going to just "finish" or ""go away" any time in the near future, eh...
Let us bear in mind the very real and likely prospect of deploying troops to other global hotspots whilst contemplating all-expense paid trips courtesy of Uncle Sugar.

Firstly, don't forget the axis-of-evil is a triangle that that has only had one of it's three sides dealt with. President Bush has not been nearly as focused on the other two "angles" of the trio, for some reason...
North Korea....or Syria?....or Indonesia, for that matter...
Nexti-in-line Iran seems like a cut-and-paste of Iraq, with a slightly more hostile local populace. Maybe not quite Mogadishu, but pretty close, if the ruling clerical Government in power has any clout remaing should it come to that. 444 days cooped up in an Embassy is a very ****ty way to lose a year of your life, I imagine. Where else, folks, but Tehran...'Lest we forget.(Please, no disrespect intended.)
Speaking of Mogadishu, what about an armoured drive into the heart of Pyongyang? Fighting in , the whole way ala Baghdad. Didja wonder if that'd be on the cards too?? What about doing it but at night, in the snow...
(And before the gung ho chest-thumping starts, "bring it on" is not a constructive reply, and is an easy-out.)
<takes off devils advocate cap>

Please do not doubt my dedication or committment to the War on Terror.. I am a patriot, and a proud ex-Infanteer. I have no doubt that any nation militarily taking on the US of A will come off second best, every time. But as TriggerPuller so wisely pointed out, aspiring to a tour in A'stan might just as easily turn out to be spent hunting insurgents in the Phillipines, or assisting Indonesian miltary teams chase down Jemah Islamiyah bomb-making factories. Or you might just pull gate sentry duty at Cheyenne Mountain. The armed forces are funny like that. (Well, maybe you can go cry to the Chaplain, and he might be able to pull some strings for you, but otherwise...Sorry Charlie.)

Having said all that, to answer the original thread question, on would I go do it again if I could? Not just yes, but Hell yeah..
Why? It's a Warrior thing. (If you have to ask, then you probably wouldn't understand ...)
