UK cemetery vandalised in France

Police in France are investigating the desecration of a cemetery containing the remains of British soldiers killed in World War I.
They say vandals damaged more than 40 headstones at the graveyard in the village of Bailleul-Sir Berthoult, near the north-eastern city of Lille.

Investigators say no graffiti was found at the scene and the motive for the desecration remains unclear.

Britain's Commonwealth War Graves Commission said it was shocking.

Tombstones were toppled over, one or two broken and one torched. Police say the visitors' book for the graveyard was also burned.

The vandalism in the Albuera cemetery, which has 252 graves, is thought to have taken place last week.

France's war veterans minister, Hamlaoui Mekachera, said he was "strongly dismayed at the desecration" and hoped that those who carried out "such barbaric and shocking acts" would be arrested.

I hope they are caught and made to fix their mess and apologise to the relatives of the graves they desecrated.

I was is France and Belgium last month and visited the graves of my great, great uncles (Australian Infantry). I was the first relative to visit in ~ 90 years. I was impressed at how well cared for the graves are kept, and the visitors book was very very sad to read. One memorable signature said "Dad I am now 90 years old, this will be the last time I can come to visit you, your loving daughter......."

I was nearly in tears reading the visitors book. **** those bastards who burnt it.

Our country boys from 1,000s of km's away came over to that foreign land and gave their lives for French freedom, show some respect.

I'm so dissapointed to hear this kind of news from my own country. I really hope the vandals will be arrested too.
