Im going to apply for NROTC and i want to go into special operations. What navy careers are available in special ops? Also, how difficult is it to get into BUD/S?(since i want to try to be a SEAL)

You might want to send a PM to Matchanu for info about NAVSPECWAR and BUD/S, in case he doesn't see this thread.

Going SEALs as an officer is going to be hard as ****. Your best bet for Naval Special Ops is with the Special Boat Unit (they work with the SEALs and Marine Recon).
This site has the Navy MOS for Spec Ops http://www.fas.org/irp/agency/dod/socom/sof-ref-2-1/SOFREF_Ch4.htm

We had a bunch of Midshipman from NROTC units working the ships this summer, some of the girls were pretty hot :D.

I got your PM but I'll answer what I can here in case anyone else has a simular question.
First, are you an american citizen? are you able to get a secret clearence?
O.k., did you want to go the officer route or enlisted?
The standards are pretty high for just getting your name in the hat to go to BUD/S. You need to be in near perfect physical condition, no mental defects, clean background, etc....
If you go enlisted, you'll need to join the Navy, go through boot camp and "A" school, and if your paperwork checks out and you have orders to BUD/S, away you'll go. Try to get something in your contract that will guarantee going to BUD/s. You will have a physical fitness test in boot camp and "A" school prior to getting your orders to BUD/S. When you get to BUD/S, you will take the fitness test again before "classing up".
As far as the officer route goes, you'll have to ask your NROTC trainers or NSW counsler about that. I was enlisted so I don't know the process. One thing is for certain, there are far less billits for officers than enlisted.
A lot of people are filtered out before training even begins.
I'm sure I don't need to talk about BUD/S as it's been covered to death.
There is SWCC as well, it's a good program, not easy by any stretch of the imagination, but not quite as intense as BUD/S.
Going Special Operations in the Navy is a big gamble. In the Army you can wash out of training and still play with guns. Wash out of the Air Force program and you are still surrounded by all those cute Air Force chicks. Wash out of BUD/S or SWCC and you'll be haze grey and under way, kind of like hell, only wetter.
BUD/S has a 70%+ washout rate. That doesn't even account for the large number of sailors that won't even make it to BUD/S due to one reason or another. Even passing BUD/S doesn't guarantee a slot in the teams, you still have 6 months of SQT.
Team life is rough, you will be gone most of the time, divorce rates are about 90%. BUD/S is difficult no doubt, but there will be far worse days ahead, and far more dangerous.
I'm sure you'll have more questions, but I hope this helps a bit.

Were you a citizen of another country before this? I only ask because of the comment made by another poster.
How old are you now?
How are you eyes? Hearing?
Are you physically in shape?
How well do you work under pressure?

Pretty key. When I left for the Point one of my high school buddies left for Navy Basic. Told us he was going straight to the SEALs when he finished. Those of us in the know, pretty much figured he wouldn't. 4 years later he's still not a SEAL.
Like Match said, its a big gamble. That said, good luck with it all.

If one has been diagnosed as Bipolar, and taken medication for it, will the military check your medical records if you don't tell them you were diagnosed? And does that mean they will not allow you to join?
I'm just curious if there is any way around that.

If it's not in your contract, there is a good chance you'll end up in the fleet for 2 years before you'll even have a chance to try out. Even then, if you are good at whatever you are doing in the fleet, they might not let you go, if you are a **** bag, NSWC may not want you. It's a double edged sword.
I went in on the Divefarer contract in 1988. I was guaranteed to go to BUD/S, but I had to sign on for an additional 2 year extension. If you pass BUD/S, you'll have to extend anyway for a minimum of 4 years in the teams. 4 years is only 1, maybe 2 operational platoons so it goes by very quickly.

Background check may or may not reveal this. If you try to hide it, not only will you not get a clearence, you may serve jail time or be fined.
This job isn't for everyone. There have been guys that are PT studs, can move, shoot, and manuver better than anyone, and still get ****canned from the teams for any number of reasons.
Does your diagnosis completely preclude you from ever joining the teams? I don't know, it would depend on the serverity of your illness and whatever the Navy docs and NSWC would determine.
Your best bet is to be completely honest.

It may depend on what country you originated from, but sometimes that is to NSW advantage. There was a couple of guys that were in the teams that were formerly from another country. The Turkish guy on the East Coast was a serious bad ass. There have been Canadians, Vietnamese, etc.. that became U.S. citizens and joined up.
Are you in contact with a NSW recruiter as of present?

Let me ask around and see if I can get you pointed in the right direction.
IIRC, the most important thing for nrotc or going officer ranks for any service is going to be your sat scores. I think 1050-1100 combined is bare minimum. And its very competative, some people with 1200's get passed over....
