UPDATE w COMMENT: Russian military Tu-134 violated Finnish airspace -Defence ministry
6.8.2005 at 17:48
(Adds comment from Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen.)
Finland's Ministry of Defence told the Finnish News Agency (STT) on Saturday that a Russian Tupolev Tu-134 military transport jet had violated the country's airspace on Friday afternoon.
Earlier in the summer the Finnish government asked Russia to stop repeated airspace violations, including some involving Beriev A-50 aircraft, an airborne early warning and tactical control platform.
The Finnish government said then that around 15 airspace violations had taken place within the space of six months.
After the media tumult that ensued in Finland, the Russian air force promised to pay more attention to navigation, which, it says, lies behind the violations.
Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen (centre) in June announced he was happy with a report given to him by General Yuri Baluyevski, the chief of staff of Russian armed forces.
Mr Vanhanen added that the two countries had agreed that the possible airspace violations had not been intentional.
Mikhail Fradkov, Mr Vanhanen's Russian opposite number, said that the public discussion around the issue had been somewhat overdramatised.
"REGRETTABLE" -PM
The Finnish government decided in June that all future violations would be announced in public. A defence ministry statement said Friday that an unspecified aircraft had penetrated around 1km into Finnish airspace close to Porvoo, situated on the Gulf of Finland coast in the southeast of the country.
Mr Vanhanen, holding a reception for dignitaries attending the Helsinki world athletics championships in his Kesäranta residence, said the breach was a "regrettable isolated case", according to a Finnish Broadcasting Company (YLE) television news bulletin
He was further quoted as saying by YLE that the matter was considered awkward in Russia as well as the earlier violations had been discussed at a meeting with Mr Fradkov in early June.

That was an interesting one, story said it was a cold war plot by CIA to induce Soviet into believing an preemptive strike was imminent. Pilot of that flight even said he would not come back before taking on the plane ..

Wow, 1km. That's what, 4 seconds for a jet airplane? That doesn't even count as foreplay. I bet the airspace is all going like "next time you better last a lot longer."
What happens over here is that when our air space in violated two close-by fighters intercepts the plane within minutes. One puts itself behind the intruder and the other goes on the left side of the plane. The pilot is then informed that he's violating national air space and that he will be escorted out. If no radio contact is possible the pilot is shown the international sign which is tipping the wings meaning "follow me" (if I recall it correctly).

It's stupid to compare UK vs Ireland and Finland vs Russia. As you have already mentioned; Brits entering Irish airspace would result in a "learn to navigate for christs sake", while Russians on the wrong side of the Finnish border is more serious.
Spain were not that happy when British Royal Marines had an ambibious exercise at the wrong side of the border between Gibraltar and Spain.
The airspace must be really hurt now.

while Russians on the wrong side of the Finnish border is more serious.
Do tell us why is so serious? RF and Finland arent at war... not even close. Politically the relationships are overall normal. WTF is the big deal? So 4km of your precious airspace got penetrated by VTA's Tu-134 (or whatever else), explain to me exactly, how its going to affect you, or anyone esle tomorrow? Dont you realize that IF, for some unknown reason RF decides to start the all-out war with Finland, it would not start with 30 year old Tupolev cargo plane flying over your border. Get over yourselves and quit trolling for attention.
Z.
Your country's territory is your integrity as a sovereign nation. A country has both a national as well as an international obligation to control it's territory.
Russia is obviously testing how far it can push Finland.
Obviously...yeah.
Though, you forgot to answer the main question. Why RF and Finland is more serious then UK and Ireland, or any other country for that matter. If it is your obligation to control your territory - go ahead and control it. Crap like that happens all the time and everywhere, when busy air communications routes are involved. I am not saying that RF is justified in violating your country... my point is, quit blowing it out of proportion. We are not at war. And on the related note... I assure you, if RF really wants to... they can push you pretty far before your govt decides to do anything at all.
Z.
Because you are Russia. That's the answer.
I'm not a finn though.

As a Finn, I couldn't care less about these incursions. I wish the officials would at least keep silent about them, so that the beer drinking redneck armchair generals wouldn't get all wound up every time this happens.
The fact is: we can't shoot them down and we won't force them down (can't afford to piss off the Russians too much) and, in general, we can't do anything about them, so it's just better to learn to live with the incursions.

Like Korean Airlines flight KAL 007?
Russia insisted that KAL 007 was part of a U.S. operation.
The U.S. demanded the UN condemn the shoot down.
So there was an investigation. Which uncovered the fact that KAL 007 was being shadowed by a U.S. ELINT aircraft which was monitoring Russia's
defence system's response electronic - (mapping their air defence?)
Which Russia detected.
KAL flights were notorious for straying off course (all of the stewardesses dissapear into the cabin about midnight ;) ) but they were never shot down before.
So the Russians were partially right even though the U.S. was only taking
advantage of an opportunity it didn't arrange.
The U.S. quickly dropped it's complaint top the UN when this info came out. And there were recriminations since, the ELINT aircraft had detected the interception by Russian air defence, they cold've done something.
As a Finn, I couldn't care less about these incursions. I wish the officials would at least keep silent about them, so that the beer drinking redneck armchair generals wouldn't get all wound up every time this happens.

hmmm no i like the finnish F-18s the paper planes could be used as a protective shield on which all surface to air weapons would be wasted upon and THEN send in the F-18's (finally followed by the ultimate in aviation "Fokker F.27 Troopship") invincible!
that's a good plan!!!
then all 25 paratroopers on board can take moscow!!!!!

that said, I need to add thet the f.27 (and it's offspring) is the c00lest medium transport aircraft evar!!!
too bad our own government doesn't seem to think so (neither does the airforce but that's because we were forced to use them for wrong missions)
And russians deny it, as usual
The article states both sides agree the incursions are unintentional.
How could that be if the Russians are denying it is even happening?

Waste of time... just like a pissing contest with Finland.

The company that currently makes the F-18 seems to want to buy enough. They have significant investment in several aviation companies in Russia.

If the Tu makes about 750km/h it travels at 208m/s so after 5 seconds its within the Finnish Airspace and in 10 seconds it's out there again...

"Russians admit wandering into Finnish airspace, Finland content with confession."
http://www.helsinginsanomat.fi/tuoreet/artikkeli/1101980522235
"MOSCOW/HELSINKI.. Russian military officially admitted crossing over to Finnish airspace on tuesday. Russian airforce spokesman Colonel Aleksandr Drobysˇevski told that inquiry by the military showed that the plane in Finnish airspace belongs to Russian navy. It was Tupolev Tu-134-type military transport. "We apologise the event that took place and will take all precautions to prevent it from happening in the future" Drobysˇevski told to newsagency Interfax.
Finland is content with the confession and apology, replied minister of foreign affairs Erkki Tuomioja to STT.
On last friday the military Tupolev insulting the Finnish airspace flew in Finnish territory for about 17,5 kilometres. At the deepest point of it's path it was 1,2km inside Finnish territory.
The type of the plane was verified recognition flight by stand-by fighter of Satakunta Squadron.
Russian plane was of the type Tu-134 and it arrived in to Finnish airspace 14:23. Plane exited into international airspace 14:25 hours. Finnish Gulf coast guard was informed about suspected incursion at 14:43 hours.
Tupolev flew at the height of 7,4 km, and from east to west. "

"MOSKOVA/HELSINKI.. Venäjän asevoimat myönsi virallisesti Suomen ilmatilan loukkauksen tiistaina. Venäjän ilmavoimien tiedottaja eversti Aleksandr Drobysˇevski kertoi asevoimien tekemän tutkinnan osoittaneen, että Suomen ilmatilaan harhautunut kone kuului Venäjän merivoimille. Se oli tyypiltään Tupolev Tu-134 -sotilaskuljetuskone. "Me pahoittelemme tapahtunutta ja ryhdymme kaikkiin toimiin estääksemme nämä tapaukset tulevaisuudessa", Drobysˇevski kertoi uutistoimisto Interfaxille.
Suomi tyytyy Venäjän tunnustukseen ja pahoitteluun ilmatilan loukkauksesta, ulkoministeri Erkki Tuomioja (sd) kertoi STT:lle.
Viime perjantaina Suomen ilmatilaa loukannut venäläinen sotilas-Tupolev lensi Suomen alueella noin 17,5 kilometrin matkan. Syvimmillään kone oli Porvoon edustalla Suomen puolella noin 1,2 kilometrin verran.
Tyyppi varmentui Satakunnan lennoston päivystyskoneen suorittamalla tunnistuslennolla.

Russia is our 2nd largest trading partner if I remember correctly, it's not in Finland's nor Russia's intrest to escalate this any further.
Few here seem to think that in a scenario like this there are two ways to act, either go to war or shut up. This sort of thinking is, of course mentally retarded.
As for operaattori's last post.. . I don't know what to say.. . Seek help?
As a sidenote, there was an article about this in the local Crapazine "Iltalehti" could have been "Iltasanomat" as well, they're both pretty much the same.
Anyway, It seems the Hornets have taken photos of the intruding planes, and the paper thought they should be published. The Airforce said that this could "reveal capabilities of the airdefence" so they didn't want to make them public.
Do Hornets come with cameras as part of the regular equipment? If not, does anyone know what cameras they are using?

Yes , I suppose I'm not ready to go to war over this just yet either. But it isn't exactly good conduct either from the Russian side to keep doing these airspace violations at regular intervals.
