View Full Version : Dutch A-stan SF documentary
A documentary that's been on Dutch tv a while back about US SF in Afghanistan. Just found it in the channel's online archives. The comments and subtitles are in Dutch, but I'd say it's still fairly interesting...
It's pretty big tho...about 25 mins or so.

I used a program called WM recorder.
Anyone know of a way to put in English subtitles for all the Dutch stuff?

Recorded it. Now how do I make a bit torrent file outta this?
Yeah I had posted a bunch of pictures from it a while back when it was on. The subtitles don't really matter because all of the American SF guys are all speaking English.

This movie was made by an american cameraman and a Norwegian journalist. Both working freelance for the Norwegian commercial broadcaster TV2 and was shown on that channel first time a while back.
The linked movie is only an excerpt of the full story who's about an hour long or so.
This excerpt does for instance not show those parts of the reportage concerning the hearts and minds effort of the American soldiers depicted.
The medical part of it appeared to be well working, but the rest of it was not very impressive. Consisting mainly of handing out leftover spoils from our western market echonomy like clothing and toys of the sort that no one wants to buy in the west, and packets of Kellog's Corn flakes and other food stuffs out on date.
When what the locals really wanted, was an improved more sustainable supply of water.
Also noted that most of the Afghan mercenaries working with the depicted US troops appeared not to be locals, but a ragtag of outcasts from several different tribes of low dependability.
The SF guys didn't seem to have much trust in their charges, with regards to the temptation on them to do looting amongst other things.
Not a reassuring sign either.
And lastly the US guys appeared too dependant on locals to act as interpreters (i.e. one more guy not to be trusted).
Not that locals working as interpreters always use their position to actively gain information for "the other side". But as they live in the area "the other side" can often be in a good positon, with regards to blackmail/threaten a local interpreter to work for them.
Yeah I think that was one of the profound challenges for SF guys in Afghanistan. Since the main languages spoken there are rather uncommon, the amount of SF soldiers available who could speak it was probably extremely low. My guess is that they had a much easier time in Iraq since it was all Arabic.

Now, the "locals" in this flic appeared to be pashtuns (or pathans as the Brits used to say during the days of the Raj). I'm shure US instructors trained pashtun Mujahedins for years in Pakistan, before the Soviets pulled out of Afghanistan. And still the knowledge of Pashtun tounge in the SF community appear to be that limited. That's a lazy effort if you ask me.
Yeah but that was 15-20 years ago already. Hardly a current requirement for the standard SF.

From what I heard, Russian actually came in handy pretty often in Afghanistan. Alot of the locals knew enough Russian for the teams to communicate with them.

Guess it's all so pretty obvious nobody asks, yet no one seems to do that much about it either. Ain't that what's called apathy ?
lol guess I just started the invasion of this movie to the net... to think this movie had been lurking in the archives for 4 months now and I just found it by accident. :)

If you have the newest version of media player and can get it to play to completion, right before it ends hit "save" in the tool bar.

I've been following these guys stories in the last couple of issues of Soldier of Fortune. I noticed that they are bit rough on the locals and there homes, but their the ones putting their necks on the line 24/7 and I'm sure that treating them with kid gloves wouldn't win them any fans anyway. Nice video, the last part when they raid the compound and restrain the two guys, was a raid on a compound in which they found bombs/detenators and trigger devices. The propane tanks were to be used as ieds. The bad guys had planned to take out the ODA and through good intel and fast action they got them before the could do any damage. Job well done!

Thanks, bro. I don't know why it wasn't working the first few times I clicked on it! Downloading now.
EDIT: Damn, it's not saving. It initializes the download but the it says the file is not on the server. :(
If there's any easy way of subtitling it I could sub it.

I would also like to know if there is an easy way of editing movie files. There's a movie that I want to get from Shrek but I need to get it OPSEC'd properly. I don't know how to do that yet.

Ok, I got the movie all downloaded! :D I'm thinking about doing a special MP.NET hosting event where I host half of the file for 3-5 days and then host the rest of the file after that. I only have 100mb of unlimited bandwidth storage so I would have to do it that way. I have a really nice java application called Jaxe that I would also provide. It's really simple to use.
I really don't like that netherlands host. ;) (It's not reliable and it's not savable).

It was on American TV with the subtitles, I recorder it! It's a very factual no-crap version of what it was like day-to-day over there! The team in the video was a hundred miles or so from us. They were referred to as the luckiest team alive because in their entire time there they weren't ambushed once; not one shot fired! I wanted to move in with them ;-) For a while people thought that the Rocket scientist was me because that's what I do as well.
Great bunch of guys!
