Have a look at this:
http://www.forgallantry.altervista.org/
I won't link to the pics directly, since the site is not my own. It's in Italian, but navigation is fairly simple so you can easily see the pictures. It's about the Armed Forces of Malta's "Elite Units". The official AFM site, where you can find some other pictures, is http://afm.gov.mt/
To be frank, with only about 1800 troops in all, there isn't much of a "Defence Force" in Malta, and the term "elite" is relative only (no AFM troops have parachute capability, for instance), and the AFM budget is painfully small. Also, Malta is absolutely and firmly neutral (not in the Swiss or Swedish sense, but neutral to its balls i.e. it will not participate in any foreign military operation, including peacekeeping), so operational tasks are confined to Maltese territory. At the moment the single task of the AFM consists in the handling of illegal immigrants. For a brief period before 1996, Malta was a member of Partnership for Peace, but a rabidly anti-European Labour government withdrew Malta's membership on its first day in office.
By the way, since some of you are from China, Malta only got one rifle per soldier when China recently donated a batch of AK-47 rifles. That's the kind of situation it's in.
nice pic
malta is a tpycal mediterrian country.
Nice pics, I lived there for a couple of years.
I wouldn't mind retiring there.

Thank you for your website!!!
But sorry,I don't know any information about China donated a batch of AK-47 rifles to Malta ,Chinese AK is Type 56/56-1/56-2,and I found the soldier of Malta'sAK is not from China. :) :)
Those guys are Brits from the Royal Berkshire regiment and are not Maltese. Pics were taken around the time of the Suez crisis in 1956. Thread title should be changed to reflect the pics as it gives the impression they are members of the Maltese defence force.
Nice pics though.

The standard AFM infantry rifle is the AK-47, of Chinese manufacture. I'm not an expert on weapons so the designation might be different. Within C Company, the standard rifle is the Russian-manufactured AKM-47. The AFM also have som FN-FAL rifles, and SLRs which are used on parade. Around 2002/2003, the AFM purchased a number of MP5s, which have replaced the Sterling and Beretta M12 within the AFM. Some Berettas are still used by police units and the Revenue Security Corps.
China also donated a number of anti-tank weapons. You can see the picture here (I had posted it in the "women" forum) http://img311.imageshack.us/img311/5740/pictureafm0294wx.jpg

I've been to Malta twice on holiday/vacation, they made the movie Popeye there, the place is top. Loved it, and would love to go again. The first time we went, on the way out we stayed at an old military base the holiday company was turning into a holiday camp, that was nice.
Malta, then the Greek Islands are my all time favorites in the Med woot
