I was watching Black Hawk Down the other day, and noticed that at one point, the M249 gunner (if I remember correctly) takes a magazine from a dead Somali's AK47. I thought it uses 5.56mm... ??

Its so other militia men dont grab the magazine to use or he kept it as a souvenir.

I never even thought of that. Are u sure it wasn't the guy with the M-60 which fires 7.62mm ammunition? I'll have to watch it again.

The two rounds are far from interchangeable. The US/NATO round is the 7.62x51mm verses the Soviet 7.62x39mm so-called short round. The NATO 7.62 is a longer, more powerful round whilst the 7.62 short is considered an intermediate rifle calibre.

Most people forget that the AK-47 and the AK-74 look very similar. While he 47 used a 7.62 round the 74 uses a 5.45 x39 mm. Although it isn't a NATO standard round, its smaller then the bore size, and will thus fit through the barrel.

This is definitely a newbie question, but wouldn't using smaller size rounds than what the gun is spec'ed for, cause issues with rifleing and it bouncing around inside before it leaves the barrel?

Thats right Hood and due to the length of the case it wont work at all. Probably kept for souvernir

AK rounds does not fit in m60s. the russian 7.62's velocity is different and the rifle line in m60 will jam the round.

I talked to some friends at Battalion and they said that the 5.45x39 will fit in the chamber of the M-16/4 and will fire. The rounds for the AK-47 however will not work in any of the 7.62 NATO weapons.

Ok, I just so happened to have it handy, and they say:

"Nice man, very smooth."

"Single shot through the engine block."

"Sh*t, that's a shame, that was a nice jeep."
