What on earth were they doing going upto a suspicious package in the 1st place?
What are the SOP's regarding this?
Bloody incredible that they're alive today,I'm a bit suspicious that they were filming this at the same time, somebody knew what was going to happen, and set the camera's to film it!
Incredible..........New underwear please!!

Correct me if I am wrong but dont they have to secure the area, means they have to be in some proximity, as for the video, the troops knew it was there so taping would make sense.

In NI when we had anything suspicious the IA was to cordon it off to prevent anyone going near it,for the exact reason that these 2 lucky buggars found out, walking up to inspect a suspicious package is a no no,there are so many different ways to detonate it,such as pressure pads, trip wire's,timers(this looked like a timer job) tilt switches. So you never went up to have a look!!
We had a rule" if you can see it,it can see you" so when placing a cordon you stayed out of the "package" Line of sight!.
Yeah the taping makes sense if it was reported, but it looked like there was No Command and Control,or no ICP(Incident Control Point) set up either.
Clear and Cordon should have been the priority to prevent ANY casualties whether it be civilian or Military.

I dunno, I think the first thing I would do is piss my pants. Then I'd try and set up some sort of defensive position...

These ****y traps (they're not improvised explosive devices. Please. These are ****y traps. That just doesn't SOUND good, and hurts morale so we have to be politically correct I suppose) are sometimes command detonated. That means someone may have been watching/waiting for soldiers to get close before they blew up the device. This guy may have gone early since the soldiers were suspicious. In any case, that means a hostile might be watching right then. Weapons ready, look alive.

Another nasty surprise is sometimes there are two bombs. After the first bomb goes off, they wait and then detonate the second bomb as soon as they start trying to pull out the wounded. :(

Well if you notice though it looks like it was that tree that probably saved their lives since they were standing in front of it and it seems the bomb was on the other side of it.

hmm , interesting . But it shouldn't have to be "suspicios object" , it can be burried charge , and they just didn't saw it . And yes , those guys got very lucky . Don't jump here guys , but it's not very proffessional to stand like that . Wonder what were the reaction of the force , after the charge detonated . Here you have , by the way , example of collathoral damage made by the combatants - instead of the soldiers , they hit Iraqi child , something that happends pretty much in Urban populated areas . Regards to the tree . I recomend it to award .

That was close.. :( On the news in Denmark it was reported that two Iraqis were wounded and one Iraqi schoolboy (15) was killed.
The troops were notified by some schoolboys on their way home and the troops went tp envestigate, apparently a suspicious device had been found in a trashcan along the road. As the troops got close the device detonated, this way pointing in the direction that maybe this was a radiocontroled bomb, a tactic seen used in chechnya and i suppose also in Israel.

As for the presence of camera team I don't find that suspicious, a lot of the news crawling all over Baghdad probably use radio scanners to find out where "the action" is. Common news crew tactic.
