The first thing these guys are going to ask you is how much you want to spend.

I have a simmons on my rifle and on my slug gun....and both are awesome.

Clear sighting is easy, no need for a perfect placement of cheek to butt stock needed. Good in all kinds of weather (I hunt in Michigan so we get it all during deer season). They hold their zero exceptionally well.

go to Cabelas.com for a list of the good scopes. I think I paid less than $140USD for each.

If there's EVER a problem Cabelas will make it right...no questions asked!

Get a 3-9x40/50 Leupold Rifleman. You don't need 12x magnification for deer hunting. Spend the rest of your 350 on GOOD RINGS AND A GOOD BASE IF YOU DON'T ALREADY HAVE THEM.

Here in Europe, we generally prefer European scopes on our rifles. You don't say what calibre your rifle is but I'm assuming it is at least .270/.308/.30-06 this is important as many cheap scopes (especially the reticules, won't withstand much recoil.

I have Schmidt & Bender scopes on two of my deer rifles and a Zeiss on the third, but I don't know how these cost out Stateside. I prefer Schmidt & Bender over anything else, both for durability and optical qulaity - IMO they are way better than Zeiss or Swarovski and leavethe likes of Leupold and Redfield in the shade.

I would agree with HoboWithAK, good rings are paramount, as are bases if not already machined into the rifle. In fact, my advice is buy the best scope/rings combination you can afford, and then buy a rifle to hang below them, there are few bad rifles today, but many bad scopes and even more terrible ring/base combinations.

N.B. Remember to free float your barrel, bed the action, and to properly seal the stock if it is a wooden one.
