or whatever its pelled... Anyone found interest articles about them. after a mythbuster with water(where bullets were broke into small bits that probably couldnt do any harm) I just started to thinkg about how bullets are richocheting, about consistency of that ricochets, and any adamage such secondary projectiles can inflict...

basicly they can fly to any direction all other than directly to the location the were shot from, you would see this by shooting tracers, and especially at night its sometimes also scarry yet awesome to see how they fly..

But sorry i have no articles about this. And the phenomenom is rather random as it depends on so many variables that to how far and to which direction projectile will richocet if it does at all.. surface its hitting, the properties and angle of it, velocity and shape of the bullet etc hardness, mass and density of the both surface and the projectile hitting if youd know those all you could calculate i guess, but thats really beyond me..

Yup I saw few of such night videos... that is a one of the reason I asked . Does machineguners have minimal distance to engage armored vechilcles? Are strafing planes in danger from their own richochets?
By consistency I meant if there are any situations where existance of ricochets should major consideration not the consistency of direction bullet go...

To both i think not.

Well, one comes to mind, and thats CQB in concrete house / bunker of a kind, where in close range firing high velocity weapon and even a pistol you could very well get you own bullet under your skin.

Shooting at steel targets at 100 yards with a 7.62x51 rifle, one of the spectators standing directly behind me took a hit in the leg. It didn't penetrate, but you could clearly identify the mangled copper casing of the bullet.
So yes, riccochets can travel directly to the location where it's shot from.

Well, if it traveled DIRECTLY where it was shot from, it would have ended up in the barrel again, right?

Just ****ing around. I've seen people get hit with birdshot when shooting hard targets like bowling pins. I don't think i've ever seen them penetrate clothing, but they DO come back, and they could ruin your day (eyes, crotch, other soft places).

I know you're just joshing, but the shrapnel could as well in theory hit the business end of the barrel, ending up inside it, instead of hitting the person behind me.

Yes. :P

And that is also the most unlikely place it will land, is the place it left, everything else is possible.. ;)

Depends, what is seen when Tracer Bullets hit a target is usually just the tracer Material that is seperated from the Bullet by the Impact and not the Bullet itself.

Theoretically a Bullet can be deflected to any direction without loosing much energy.

Ive fired lots of tracers but really didnt realize that this would be the case, but it makes sense as they sometimes fly so slow and in weird loops.. :P

working the butts in the range in april for the machine gun range, there was a richocet and it was bouncing around inside of the butts. it bounced twice and then stopped. I was actually quite suprised that it still looked like the way it would if it was still in the casing.
but it scared the hell out of me when it happend, no need to make myself look hard.

Me and some mates used to shoot with the local rifle team just for fun.
They had an indoor range, and used .22's and competition quality CO2 guns. Anyways, we ended up using the CO2 guns alot, it's in the basement of a small mall in an old bomb shelter there (Cold War era rules) and the AC failed, wich meant the gasses drifted up into the bank directly above, so they suspended the .22's untill they could get it fixed.

So anyways, we had this one mate, he had a nack for hitting the little amount of metal there was over the targets. You'd hear "twiiiing" and then something hitting the wall behind you a couple of times every time we shot. Every time me and 2 other would turn towards where he was and shout "VIDAR!!!" Never failed, he did it atleast once every time we went there. You ended up ducking everytime he shot. Not much force in the pellets when they came back, but they'd still fvck up an eye. rofl we had a lot of fun with that.
