Don't say manual is hard everyone is able to learn it faster than handle car well on the progressive road turns. I would say manuals are safer than automats, I haven't heard about anyone who rode through shop window with manual, but I heard a lot of such stories with automats...

I prefer manual, though those new paddle-shift DSG gearboxes with the two clutches are a helluva lot of fun. Still doesn't give you quite the same control though, but it's close (and gives you the edge when that type-R or that renaulsport wants to take you on :-D )

my old car (69' El Camino) was a stick shift.
But im getting my new car tommorow, a 97 Nissan Sentra GXE. Its an automatic.
Its nice, i cant wait to get it.
82,000 miles on it, cost me just under 5,000 dollars. Its the sport model, with the spoiler and sunroof. Its also got a set of rims and a 500 dollar system in it.
I had to buy it because the El Camino is constantly needing work lately. I havent even driven it the past few weeks, ive been driving my Girlfriend's NIssan Sentra, which is identical to my new one, only hers is purple and mines grey.
So now i have to hopefully sell the el camino for a grand or so. It will hurt because it was my first and only car, and i love it, but i just cant afford to constantly be doing work on it.

I've owned 4 cars so far. Two of them were stick, the other 2 (current truck) is automatic. I'd prefer an auto for daily city driving and comfort driving. But, if I'm gonna be driving anything with 2 seats, meant to go 0-60 in under 4.5 seconds and want to take it out to a movie on the weekend, it better be stick p-)

yeh but thats when you just keep it in first and keep your foot on the clutch and brake. the worst is when you find yourself on a hill with a stop sign or light at the top.

That's my thing. I drove a '97 black Camaro SS for about a year. That was one of the most wicked cars I'd ever driven. But it wasn't a practical car. I got real annoyed driving it in stop and go traffic. It's not comfortable. I liked taking it out with my girl on the weekends to a movie or sumthin'.

I know I was driving stick when it happened. I was releasing the clutch and speeding up, while releasing the handbrake and nothing happened. Plus I had a row of cars behind me. So after three attempts, I though: Either I've forgotten something or I'll have to push the car.

Sequential gearboxes or "semi-automatic".
I've started driving couple of weeks ago and I've only driven automatics but I want my dad to teach me how to drive a manual. Anyway, semi-automatics are fun and easy because you get do to something other than just drive, and you don't have to worry about too many things.
Oh, and I don't like 2 seaters so the whole speed thing doesn't really matter to me.

My advice to you is go with your father for a couple drives in the thing (start with an empty parking lot). After you think you can get the car going from a stop pretty easily, start driving on your own. I was able to learn much faster without my parents in the car.

Automatic is OK for a everyday car.
I use to go to race tracks every now and then, and a manual is a must have imo.
I also driven cars with Semi-Automatic (F1 Gear, SMG etc.), but most of them suck. I tried them on a Ferrari 360 and a Maserati 4200 GT and it just plain sucks and is no real fun to drive. (IMO)
The new SMG on the BMW M3/5/6 however is very very good. And I heared the new Ferrari isn't bad either.

I know how to drive an automatic, I just need to get a car with a manual gearbox and have my dad teach me. I'm going home in about 3 weeks and they don't have so many automatics back there, so hopefuly I'll find a car and daddy will teach me.

This is the DSG that I'm talking about! VW have put it on the GTI Mk 5 and it's amazing.
Macs, on the GTI it's behind the steering wheel as you mentioned; it's also fixed to the wheel so it goes with the wheel when you turn it, unlike Ferrari's version on the 612 (where the paddles are fixed to the "trunk" going up to the wheel, so they do not turn with the wheel). The Ferrari's version is also single clutched, so there is a lurch when you change gears - the DSG has two clutches, one for odd gears and one for even, so there is no such problem when you make a gearchange.

Oh, and I don't like 2 seaters so the whole speed thing doesn't really matter to me.
I salute you. I don't know how I survived my first years of driving. In Denmark you used to get your permit revoked if you drove 100% beyond the speedlimit. Whenever I drove alone or without adult supervision, I'd drive just below of the 'double' speedlimit. I had a few near misses, but never got a ticket or a scratch. I never thought of the possibility of losing controle or killing someone.
I remeber hearing about a girl in town getting hit by a car doing 80km/h in a city zone and she survived, but had both legs amputated. I used to drive sometimes 100km/t that place. After hearing about that, I stopped speeding.

I remember the u.s.army trucks blocking the right lane of the autobahn all the time i drove to the south, when passing würzburg. Maybe it was you.
I drive manual, and even my small car makes 110+ mph. As Macs said when you're driving to work without speeding and just being relaxed 160km/h (100mph) is a regular speed. When you don't have heavy traffic of course. And i'm lucky of having a free autobahn every morning, because i live in the city most people work in and work outside. I can drive pedal to the metal and laugh at the other side of the autobahn who are normally stuck in a 15km traffic jam. Driving under 20mph.

I voted both because I prefer a manual in a car, but my Jeep Grand Cherokee is only offered in an auto.

Auto can't compare to the feeling you get when you push your engine up to ~6500 rpm and shift from 1st to 2nd. Even triptronic doesn't stack up to that slamming the shifter back feeling.
I <3 my manual tran and the engine its connected to.

Depends on the location. Folks down here in the south cant drive for **** so fast braking is required, nearly all the accidents around here are by drivers with manual transmissions

Are you getting a Mk4 or a MkV?
'cos the MkV is the shizzle. On the roads there's barely a damn thing that can keep up (or attempt to :-P )

You know what kicks ass?
For homecoming at my school (Sept 30) we drive the homecoming attendants across the football field in front of the stands during halftime, and make the presentation. We alwys have the coolest mother****ing cars cause everyone at my school is a rich bastard.
I get to drive the Aston Martin next week. woot

It's a Mk4 (1.8t), Mk5 (2.0t) is going to be a 2007 model in the US, i believe...
I orignally wanted a N/A Chevy cobalt SS, but test drove the two back to back, the GTI was ridiculously better, and farrrr more practical. Black with black leather interior, can't wait to pick it up monday!

Ive owned both. Personally, i prefer an Automatic at this time.
Up here the traffic can be rough, especially in the mornings, and the snow and stuff makes a stick shift a hassle.
If i lived somewhere where there wasnt as dense traffic or poor road conditions in the winter, i would definately want a manual.
in fayetteville north carolina a manual is not a good idea but in fort hood its not that bad because they have more than 2 lanes open at one time

200bhp (though there's a mod chip out now to get it upped to 230... I'm sorely tempted...) and 0-62mph in 6s.
Fastest I've taken her is 155mph.
And username, you can't heel and toe in any car that uses a synchromesh gearbox which is most modern manual cars!
wow thats a beautiful car, whats the base price?

GTI MkV starts at £19000... so it'll probably retail in the US when it comes out for something like $25000 or something... not too sure on that though.
It's an excellent car, it's a helluva lot of fun :-D not that i'd break the speed limit or anything p-)
