Actually there was a quiz which civilians could answer and then submit to the Navy, some of the winners could fly in a Navy chopper, embark in a frigate or have a trip in a submarine. :)

That is really neat. Great PR beside giving some civilians a memory of a life time.

these demos are rare in front of public usually are executed inside the military installations for visiting dignitaries. Your best chance is to plan your trip prior to the next Navy Week.:)

Depends on how fast their replacements will arrive. The upgraded F-4E AUP will remain in service for some time to come, but the Corsairs will be retired earlier.

:D

During my service in Cyprus, we had one private named Haydar. He was a shepherd from Hakkari. He learnt Turkish in the military and could barely count to ten. One day we were at the grenade training range, practicing different throwing techniques to 25 and 35 metres. It was his turn. The captain ordered him to throw the grenade. He smiled back the captain. We all expected a moderate performance since the company was not very good at grenade throwing. All of a sudden, he threw the grenade and the captain whispered "****.." We measured the distance and it was about 52 metres! Haydar kept similing and asked the captain "another one?"

;)

Cheers

HS Argo historical trieres ship and HS Roussen FAC on the background:
http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/2796/tpkroussen1lf1.jpg

thats a very strong picture..in one word,tradition

although Argo is not a trireme, Olympias is

and technically this trireme is part of the Greek Fleet the following is not OT :)

History Brief of Trireme 'Olympias' (http://www.hellenicnavy.gr/trihrhs_en.asp)

Construction works for the trireme of 'OLYMPIAS' began in Greece in May 1985 and was finished in July 1987. The drawings for her manufacture were provided by the 'Trireme Trust' of Britain, while the essential funds were granted by the Hellenic Navy. Initially, the trireme was used as part of an experimental archeological project, in order for scientists to determine the sailing characteristics (speed, etc. ) and her strength. Finally, battle tactics and living conditions inside the vessel were as well examined.
Information concerning the vessel's construction and tests that were followed, can be found in Commander's S. Platis H.N. relative article, published in volume 458 of the Naval Review publication. Additional information can be found in 'The Trireme Trials 1988, Report on the Anglo - Hellenic Sea Trials of Olympias by J.F. Coates , S.K. Platis , J.T. Shaw', published by Oxbow Books.

Due to trireme's frequent use when she was transported in Britain in 1993, in order to participate in events about the 2,500 years since the beginning of Democracy and the way the trireme was designed and constructed, several damages were caused to her craft. Large scale repairing from the summer of 1995 until the autumn of 1996, which was covered by the Hellenic Navy budget, rectified the previous damages. In 1997, the Naval Supreme Council decided that the trireme should be used solely as an exhibit and not for sailing. The trireme was transported in Naval Tradition Park in Trokantero, where it remained as exhibit. In 1998 it was detected that the degree of the damages had grew, while in 1999 further damage was revealed.

As a result of this extensive damage as well to the requirement for the trireme's use for the needs of the Athens 2004 Olympic Games, it was decided that repairs were necessary. In 2002, Elefsis Shipyards offered to undertake the repair of the trireme, free of charge. The Hellenic Navy accepted the offer and the trireme was transported in Elefsis Shipyards. The works of repairing included the total replacement of timber in the hull of the ship and the enhancement of her stiffness. Modern ways of ship's construction were used to connect and make the timber waterproof, in order to ensure the longevity of the ship. Additionally, the timber in deck 01 was replaced and the masts as well as the steering wheel were repaired.
The trireme was launched in May 14 2004 and remained in Elefsis Shipyards for 10 days for waterproof test. The Hellenic Navy equipped the trireme and performed stability tests. Finally, the vessel was delivered to Municipality of Piraeus, which manned the ship and prepared her properly for the Olympic Flame's transportation in the night of August 11. The trireme also participated in "Classic Week" and was returned to Hellenic Navy on 15 Sept 04.
On September 2004, taking into account the high maintenance cost, the high personnel requirements, both for maintenance and for sailing, as well as the lack of any apparent practical use for the Hellenic Navy, the Naval Supreme Council decided to designate the trireme as an exhibit in a specially designed space of the Naval Tradition Park. It was also decided that the trireme be assigned to the command of the Battleship Averof navel museum. The proper storage conditions ensure the ship's proper preservation at a considerably reduced cost. The trireme was transported to this space on 25 Nov 05.

Question to the hellenic experts: Why exactly this Army SF Hummer could have got 10Φ in the recent wargames?

Could it be due to sub-standard maintenance by the personel? Improper armament? Or is it a manufacturing fault?

The vehicle is brand, spanking new. So I suppose it's a shipping reference/lot number chalked at the factory or the depot before being issued.

No, it's not. The older Murmansk was a US-built Omaha class (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omaha_class_cruiser) light cruiser given to Russia under Lend-Lease during WW-II, but the Sverdlov class (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sverdlov_class_cruiser) was a post war affair.

Instead of a change of command, we should have a repatriation ceremony. Bring our people back from Kosovo, Afghanistan, etc. Participation in these endeavors costs way too much money, which can better be spent elsewhere for the benefit of the military.

I think those kinda deployments give the troops a lot of battlefield experience.

Interesting. The Maverick is green. AFAIK, HAF uses A and B models, which are usually white, and G model which is usually grey. Green Maverick are most usually D models.

Could be all wrong though :-|

Murti, read the forum rules and stickies in each section before you post again.

We do not tolerate nationalist rants in this section. If you have a Problem with Greece do not do it here.

If you decide to continue, your stay will be short.

There's also some sort of potential upgrading going on; if I remeber from an AMYNTIKH BIBLO (def. revue) some years ago. Any further clues on that?

What exactly is an "Army Reserve Club?" I've never heard that term before.

chris450
09-22-2008, 03:04 AM
its a reservist association..given the fact that unfortunately the state does not provide adequate training let alone the proper gear for the reserves ,numerous associations have been formed ,the one in question beeing one of the most active

they operate under the supervision of the Greek MoD

And I might add in cooperation with the Military when organizing National or (soon) international events.

Interesting. And they supply their own gear? Out of their own pockets?

I recall having to deal with hand-me-downs too. As a reservist in the 1980's in Canada, I remember riding around in trucks like this one:

http://www.4x4offroads.com/image-files/old-army-trucks-sept05-251.jpg

And our FN's were older than we were. :)

Yes, we do buy our gear ourselves. Not too expensive if one knows where to look. And we are active in more areas than plain military matters, like civil defense, firefighting and emergency relief.

Do you have to buy your own ammo? How do you get your firearms?

Haha, no. The Military provides us with firearms and ammo on official events, like the 7th Panhellenic Reservist Games in 2005. That's how I got to fire the M16A2 rifle (I had a G3A4 when in the Service).

Can you get buck-shot and slugs for your shotguns? Can you get Benellli M2 tact shotguns? Are the gun laws different on Crete vs the main land, I was told.

Can you get hand guns?

I feel bad every time I shoot my Garand with the Greek HXP, Pyrkal 30-06. :-(

Sure, ammo for smoothbores can be purchased at any store that specializes in hunting and outdoor activities supplies. There are certain configurational limitations on shotguns, i.e. no full auto, no folding stocks, etc, but Benellis are available, if expensive. Crete situation is not Law, but tradition, sort of. The same Law applies to all of Greece, but in Crete they just break it - a lot.
As for handguns, there is a bit of a hassle, as one has to be either a registered member of a gun club and possess a sports shooter ID, or has to demostrate convincingly that he needs a handgun for protection.

Are these reservist associations a relatively new thing in Greece, like they are in Finland?

Lot of our reservist organizations are actually lot older but currently activities are having sort of renaissance here and MoD has been stepping in organizing them to become more "regular" and active. They have assigned some about major to colonel level officers to run "official" side of things since late 90's and early 2000's.

Nice pics guys, keep 'em coming!

Dark Avenger

Been around for the last 10-15 years. Older associations were mostly founded by retired carreer personnel, and by definition do not engage in the kind of activities that we do.
Things are a bit slower here, but hopefully our MoD will follow your example - eventually.

The fact that LEFED is using airsoft guns for practise does not make them "an airsoft club"
Those are citizens and not army personel and the law does not allow citizens to own millitary rifles. If you go some pages back you will see that in post NO #3322

I just mention what bizo249 wrote about "Greek Army Reserve Club Reconnaissance Patrol Training"? As far as I know, real life military operators and self respecting reserves do not use airsoft plastic toys. As far as I see by the picture, they use airsoft. Why? Judging from what Chris450 wrote, "rifled weapons are illegal in Greece", we must assume that the other rifles (M-4 clones and Minimi too) are airsoft plastic toys too? OMG! What a surprise. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the seem "weekend plastic warriors" to me than "Greek Army reserves". Greek Army is a respected Army and I do not think that could support actively airsoft "plastic warriors" clubs. After all, I would feel quite pitty if Greek Armed forces would rely their combat effectiveness on plastic airsoft tactics at the time that Turkish Armed forces are exercising much harder, using real ammo and weapons on a much harder operation field. Do you agree?

PS. What does the civil protection badge means on their BDUs? Really strange to me considering that LEFD are not medics, not real serving or reserve operators, not airsofters. Then what? Maybe THIS (http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f206/bgold1/Motivational%20Posters/poster.jpg)?

I am sorry to say that you probably did not read carrefully or you don't understood what i wrote. Let me explain it to you
The Hellenic Army do train its reserves tactically with real guns and in army instalations.
The Hellenic Army does not depend on LEFED.
LEFED is a CIVILIAN Club consisting of people that has served in the Hellenic Armed Forces, in Special Forces mostly but not only there.
LEFED does cooperate with the Hellenic Army using Hellenic Army's installations and weapons. But that does not happen too often. The rest of the time LEFED provide training using Saiga and Airsoft "toys"
I hope that you are aware that modern Armies use wooden and plastic "toys" for training
And yes they do belong to the Civil Protection officially since they have the training and the means to help (and they did it) in firefights and desasters. I am sure that there are forumers here who know LEFED better and they will provide you with more clear answer but its clear enough that you have wrong about them...

@ GREEK-AIRBORNE: Army reserves, but civilian too. Illegal bore rifles combined with Army property rifles, airsoft toys combined with Saigas and Benellis (does Greek Army use these stuff?), civil protection role while carrying firepower... Too much complicated! Don't you think? I am not Greek like you to know better, but judging by the pictures, infos and data found inside this forum, it sounds like a cheap airsoft club to me with well wired connections. Or - in worst scenario - a political para-military guerrila group, trained to operate under the curtain.

I vote for airsoft weekend warriors

PS. What does the civil protection badge means on their BDUs? Really strange to me considering that LEFD are not medics, not real serving or reserve operators, not airsofters. Then what? Maybe THIS (http://i48.photobucket.com/albums/f206/bgold1/Motivational%20Posters/poster.jpg)?

i think some things are probably unclear to you ,you are jumping into conclusions way too fast here..

let me begin by saying that the men in the pictures are Greek Army reserves (not Greek army) ,many of them served in SF units and some are active LE officers. If you think you are watching pics of the average 18 year old teenager with no experience with real weapons ,think again

that said ,current laws in Greece do not allow rifled weapon possesion or use by civilians, with a few exceptions meaning that a) most of the reservists own smooth bores b) they use Greek army issued weapons when training in Army facilities ,which its pretty damn often c)reservists that are LE officers dont face the same problems d)YES airsoft does serve its purpose in certain cases, mock ups too

Grenadier reservists exercice for instance,"plastic toys" in the foreground ..this may come as a surprise but they are used for training purposes all over the world

http://img212.imageshack.us/img212/3394/grenadier200812dp4.jpg

now i dont know whats your beef with airsofters but this is definately not the place to rant on cheap plastic toys and imaginary operators

i doubt that your average airsofter gets to do this

etc,etc,etc

Army reserves, but civilian tooarmy reserves ARE civilians by definition and the civil protection badge has nothing to do with Medics , the term is pretty self-explanatory

i hope this helps

EDIT

The only way to be sure about their role is to be one of them. Are you?he may be or could be not ,so a)thats not a polite way to ask b) its non of your business anyway c) i dont think that any of the guys in the pics will lose any sleep if you tag them as airsofters

I remember reading some change in Greek military structure a few years ago to include national guards (or was that citizen militas) in the northern areas. I always thought they would be similar to US national guards, e.g., frequent military service to stay trained. I assume LEFED is not part of the national guard units (forget the Greek abbreviation for them).

This thread is basically run by the Greek members of this forum. I would suggest going with what they say, instead of just speculating. If you have nothing positive to contribute, leave them alone.

@mansakoni

Well said, partner!
I too would prefer to use some other means for two-way training, like Simunition, but that's just too expensive and also considered illegal on account of the pyrotechnic method of operation. Laser-tag systems are also out of our rather limited budget's reach, so airsoft was the only realistic alternative.
As we are using airsoft replicas for training and not playing around, damning us as "airsofters", i.e. using them as toys, is unfair.
We use our LEGALLY OWNED firearms only in designated ranges and with full attention to safety to keep our marksmanship skills honed.
Those criticizing us should consider this: If we are called upon to do some refresher training, or fight for what the matter, we'll have the knowledge and skills thanks in part to that kind of training.
And yes, Civil Protection is an important aspect of our work as part of our contribution to our country. Just watch the October 28th parade, as reservist associations will parade as Civil Protection affiliated organizations.

Tags on the upper chest showing O+ and A+ probably refer to blood types.
Which brings the question whether metal ID tags are being used.

Dark Avenger

ID tags are generally issued, but wearing them is a matter of personal preference. That notwithstanding, wearing a blood type indicator readily visible can save valuable time compared to trying to find and read the dog tags (unaffectionately known as "tombstones/tafoplakes", "dead meat signs/psofotampela", etc...)

Cry me a river.

Not having civilian legal semi auto assault rifles is probably caused by local gun laws. Airsofts are good for practicing urban combat, but range limit around is 50m. Like that motivational poster you posted, one airsofter said good reply for that... Airsoft: for people who don't want to kill their buddies in free time for having fun. Here in Finland we have more liberal gun laws and have access to real "reservist" rifles, but some reservist organizations still organize things like paint ball or laser tag for fun and practice sometimes.

Para-military group?
These reservist associations are controlled and regulated by ministry of defense to some extent. And sometimes they have plans for those in civilian disasters like floods and big forrest fires. Para-military may be good description, but it implies to rather negative things like south American right wing narco-terrorist militias like in Colombia for example. These guys are having fun and practicing soldiers skills in own time and mostly to own expense. In Finland similar associations have courses from any thing like first aid to rappeling and to complete reserve NCO/officer courses with military. They aren't politically connected in anyway and they will not be part of any coup or similar political plots, they are devoted to national defense. As people in them have made soldiers wows and are obliged to defend nation and maintaining laws, not attacking those.

Greek F16s at Lossiemouth
Paid a visit to RAF Kinloss this morning but nothing happening so wandered along to nearby Lossiemouth which was also quiet until a flight of five Greek F16s arrived on a fueling stop while enroute to USA via Iceland. I probably would not have stayed if it had not been thanks to Macc for a tip off of this possibility, all in all a satisfying end to the day.

The fact that LEFED is using airsoft guns for practise does not make them "an airsoft club"
Those are citizens and not army personel and the law does not allow citizens to own millitary rifles. If you go some pages back you will see that in post NO #3322

It's not that possession of rifled weapons is entirely illegal, it's just very limited. For some reason (oversimplification is one that comes to mind), the Law equates all rifled weapons, even a rifled shotgun to a military firearm, possession of which is not allowed, unless it's a deactivated collector's item. Card-carrying athletes can possess rifled weapons, but only within the narrow constraints of the Law. Basically, it's traditional European no-guns mentality. Like everywhere else, it doesn't matter how restricted and regulated the legitimate market is, if one wants a weapon to commit a crime, he'll find it.

basically the specific law is a 1950s relic ,right after the Greek civil war (communist rebels Vs national army)...every rifled weapon was categorised as "πολεμικό όπλο" meaning military weapon and all smooth bores as "hunting weapons"..so in Greece , its perfectly ok to own a 12 gauge semi auto but its illegal to own a 60year old bolt action rifle :)

Needless to say that nobody dares to touch this law due to political reasons...

That would theoretically be possible, but would still require some new legislation, something which lawmakers are rather unlikely to bother with. And the major stumbling block would still be the existing bias against gun ownership...
