The reason I asked is because in 1918 China and Manchuria were seperate, and much of China was run by western powers. Read my post again. China wasn't really a country the way we think of it today. It wasn't really such until Mao booted Chang Kai Shek out after World War Two.[/quote]

Canada has and always has had a bigger population than australia. Both Canada and Australia are forgotten for most of their sacrifices. I didnt say Australia because i would think taht some aussies on the board here would have stepped in and said something. Like Canada, Australias sacrifices shouldnt be forgotten either. Especially Gallipoli where Canucks and ANZACS (big ups to the kiwis) fought side by side.

For everyone getting their figurative panties in a bunch, where did he claim that that was in any way a comprehensive list of major WW1 participants?
I noticed no one mentioned Bulgaria, the fourth major member of the Central Powers. With 1,200,000 soldiers mobilized, they had more than Canada and Australia combined. Serbia and Romania also mobilized more men than Canada, and felt the war more directly, too.
BTW, Mustafa Kemal was not the leader of the Ottoman Empire. The Sultan during most of the war was Mehmed V. He died in July 1918 and was succeeded by Mehmed VI. The Grand Viziers during the war were Said Halim Pasha and Mehmed Talaat Pasha.
Oh, Bulgaria's head of state was Tsar Ferdinand I.
Total numbers mobilized in WW1:
Central Powers:
Germany - 11,000,000
Austria-Hungary - 7,800,000
Ottoman Empire - 2,850,000
Bulgaria - 1,200,000
Allies:
United States - 4,355,000
Great Britain - 8,905,000
France - 8,300,000
Russia - 12,000,000
Italy - 5,615,000
Japan - 800,000
Australia - 322,000
Belgium - 267,000
Canada - 600,000
Serbia - 707,000
Romania - 750,000
Greece - 230,000
New Zealand - 25,000
Portugal - 100,000
Montenegro - 50,000

Actually there is a good reason why neither Canada or Australia is on that list, or any of the other "independant" Dominions such as South Africa or New Zealand either.
While Canada technically became independant from Britain with the BNA of 1867, it and Australia were only partially independant. The Dominions were self governing and responsible for domestic matters yes, but possessed no distinct independant foreign policy.
Canada did not actually acheive full independance from Britain until the 1920's as evidenced by voting against British policy at the League of Nations (as if that really mattered).
The Canadian PM MacKenzie King demonstrated full independance in regards foreign policy in WWII by waiting seven days after the Brits to declare war on Germany on September 10, 1939.

It took 27 postings before that came up... Cheez, ligthen up folks. He just posted some trivia questions on who was the leaders of some countries. Not who did the most work... bla bla bla.

hahaha
population of britain now is 60 million it was less back then, and yet 9 million died which then would have been 1 in 6 if not more.
canadian contribution 600 000, for it to be a bigger contribution it would of had to be less than 3.6 million canadians at the time, whereas in reality it was closer to 15 million.

Apart from not having as higher numbers as some, it is impossible to say Canada did not make a considerable contribution to the war.
Yes, but not enough to get arsy about not being named in the list of countries at the start of this thread.

actually Canada gained more idependence from GB before 1920 i think 1917 im not sure though.
oh and [AFSOC] you kick ass woot im guessing by your avatar your American right? its nice to see people stick up for countries that people dont like to recognize (ie Canada, an Australia), i would've jumped in here to flame at the guy who didnt include Can. Aus. but you guys seemed to have covered it

It actually didn't culminate until the 1920's when we actually voted against the Brits at some League of Nations motion about an Italian-Greek territorial dispute in the Med.
You are right though in that the process started in 1917 with what we accomplished at Vimy Ridge. After that we and the Australians were the elite, the shock troops of the Imperial forces. We were also seen as Canadians and not British colonial troops for the first time.
Had the war gone on for another year it is more than likely that the British PM Lloyd George would have fired Haig as Cin C of all British forces in France and replaced him with Arthur Currie the Canadian Corps commander who had started the war as a Militia Col. The Australian Corps Commander would have been his 2ic.
Both were considered because of their innovative idead.
As it was Canada earnd it's own seat at the peace table seperate from Britain which started us on the road to full independance.

Wrong. China fell apart and was reunited quite a couple of times since then.
