Chandler, who pilots Thunderbird No.1, said Thunderbird plane Nos. 3 and 4 touched as they flew in their signature diamond formation Saturday afternoon.

All four planes returned safely to the Gary Airport after the incident.

No one was injured.

The piece of the plane was not recovered.

The Thunderbirds were conducting an investigation into why the planes touched, Chandler said.

Chandler would not comment Sunday on a possible cause of the accident, and said the damage to the planes was still being assessed.

Mayor's Office of Special Events spokeswoman Cindy Gatziolis said the piece that fell is not essential to fly.
