Here's my department:

My station (station 1) has the ladder, the rescue, one of the three pumpers and the on-duty Lt.'s vehicle. [/url]

that place looks familiar.

Didnt that remodel that firehouse like 4 or 5 years ago?

I dont like them new fire engines all the stations around here are getting. They all look the same. Rescues and pumpers, you cant tell the difference anymore. The pumpers used to have the chrome water control panels on the side, and the open rear cab with the jumpseats, the gun on top... Now all that stuff is covered up by them rolling doors on the side, which the rescues also have. Of course, looks arent all that important when it comes to functionality- saving property and lives.

up until about 3 months ago the station here had 3 of these:

http://www.mcfw.com/main/app/rcfd/183.jpg

now they have one of these as a rescue, and 2 similar looking pumpers.
i dont like em, they look to cold, they lack heart.

Good looking units guys. I just put in my app to the local fire deptarment, all volunteer, minus the fire chief . Hope to hear back soon from them. Cant wait to begin training.

Those are Saulsbury pumpers/rescue if I'm not mistaken. I worked for Saulbury as an Engineer for three years. There's definitely something to be said for the classics (I drove a 1954 American LaFrance 700 open cab pumper once), but the new rescue pumpers have their advantages in function.

Good to see someone else from the Rochester area.

Unfortuantly these are the only pictures I can find of my area's Fire & Rescue Service :(...

http://uepc014.ee.qub.ac.uk/rtr/special_features/goddess/green_goddess_back.jpg

... have seen a bit of service aswell in the past year/s. ;) (They're 'Green Goddesses'... The Armed Forces fire-engines, they were used by the Armed Forces and part-time/reserve fightfighters during the firefighters strike. Unfortuantly they're not as reliable as the civil ones, which led to one breaking down in the middle of my town, which led to a load of Townies laughing at the soldiers trying to get it started up again... Shame the soldiers didn't have their L85s on 'em.)

Please tell me im not the only one who think the European fire trucks look like modified Eurovans?

Our firetrucks here in America are probably the best around.

You mean the BIGGEST in the world. One of those big trucks wouldn't be any good on my station ground - you wouldn't get it down the country lanes.
And what good is a truck wedged between the banks of a country lane when your house is on fire?
Not a lot.

LA County Fire Dept. is one of the largest in the country (not sure exactly which spot, but for some reference, LA County Sheriff's Dept. is the 3rd largest dept. in the nation.) so they use a variety of vehicles. The station closest to me (two blocks away) uses these types.

Why you call fire-trucks engines?

Fire engines have the abillity to pump water from their onboard tanks using an engine, thus the name.

Ladder companies have trucks, and are unable to pump water.

Most people call everything painted red with lights on it a fire truck though...

What he said. Basically it's just slang/lingo for diferentiating between the different types of fire trucks. ;) My uncle is a battalion chief for LA county fire and that's what he told me so I can only assume it's true.

Note: there are ladder trucks that also have an engine drive water pump and tank, which are called Quints (short for Quintuple). Most "engines" are what were traditionally referred to as Triple-Combination-Pumpers (triple because it has a water pump, a water tank and supply hose). There used to be many Quads (same as triple plus a full compliment of ground ladders - those found on a ladder truck, not just the two or three found on most triples). Quints add the Aerial device (ladder and/or bucket on a turntable). Of course, most Quints have only 300 gallon tanks versus the 500 - 1000 gallon tanks found on most pumpers/engines. There are also Tankers and Tanker-pumpers, which have a 1500-3000 gallon tank (there are a few with 5,000 gallon tanks, but these are usually converted commercial tanker trucks). These are mostly used for rural firefighting where one pumper sets up in front of the house with a porta-pond, which is refilled by tanker trucks on a rotating cylce (they go from the house to the nearest water source).

This info mostly pertains to the US fire service - it's definitely different elsewhere in the world.

How come a fair number of US fire departments also have ambulances and paramedics on strength? I ask because in the UK the two services are totally seperate.
