View Full Version : Iowa Caucuses surprise everyone

Many people (including myself) had thought that the Democratic primaries had come down to a three-way race between Dean, Lieberman, and Clark. We couldn't have been more wrong.

The Caucus isn't complete, but right now John Kerry is in the lead, with John Edwards coming in #2. **** Gephardt and Howard Dean are struggling for #3.

If John Kerry ends up being the Democratic front-runner, Bush is going to have a much more difficult time in November. Dean never stood a chance. Kerry could turn this back into a real election contest.

this is getting to be a pretty interesting story.

cauc is the nominative singular form of caucus apparently. however, where can you go from here if you don't have the dictionary? it could be a fourth declension noun, so caucus is the plural of cauc. so, the caucus would be the plural form of 'drinking vessels'.

there is a latin preposition 'penes' which means 'in the power of, in the hands of'. :D

surprisingly, the nominative singular form of '*****' is indeed '*****', which would make the plural form 'penes'. interesting connection with the above preposition.

however, there is another possible root of *****, which is the nominative singular of 'pen' as in an animal pen. the definition of 'pen' is a 'provisions, food; stock of a household; storeroom in temple of Vesta;'

Vesta? the people who worship her and keep vows to her are called 'Vestal Virgins'. is there ****** connection between these words?

ducimus is the first person, plural, indicative, present form of the word 'duco' which means 'to lead'. ducimus thus means 'we lead'.

Vesta was the greek goddess of Hearth and Home..... (roman name Hestia) It's where we got the saying "keep the home fires burning"
She took a vow of celibacy, and the virgins who lived in her temple and tended the fire did the same.... hence the term "vestal virgins"
