This happened on 20 AUG 05

This is my vehicle that I was in when our truck was hit. I was the gunner of the vehicle, the girl in the picture was our medic. Their were 4 people in the truck, the medic recieve glass to the face and the driver recieved glass to the neck. My protective glasses were blown off and the ammo can from my .50 cal machine gun was hit and exploded over 40 rounds causing it to hit me in the face. I received a lacerated cornia, temporary partial vision loss in my left eye, glass cuts to my arms, whiplash, whole left side of my body feels like I was hit by a 2 X 4 and everyones ears are still ringing. Everyone says I am lucky to be alive. The passenger on the opposite side was untouched. The bomb was 2 155mm mortar rounds detonated by wireless radios. Everyone is feeling better today, the doctor said my eye is healing well. 3 of us will be recieving purple hearts and we have all been returned to duty. I am holding in the picture the shrapnel that went threw the ballistic window and landed at my feet. I wasn't in the pictures on the scene becuase they had to move me into another truck

AFAIK 155mm is artilery round not mortar...

Plus a direct hit of a 120mm on a humvee leaves....almost nothing :d

Do they only rig them to explode? Not launch towards a target?

of course they only rig it how on earth would you want to hit a hummwe with artilery? Or even a mortar? they dig them in and rig them and detonate them with cellphones or wire.

I ment - don't they rig it so it launches on the road side towards the target, not just explode the explosives inside it?

to launch it you need a launcher... they usualy put wire and simple detonator inside it where orginal artilery detonator was usualy located and then construct some cell phone/radio/wire based detonating device... It's crude and simple but it "works"

AFAIK 155mm is artilery round not mortar...

I have seen pictures of 160mm mortar rounds found in Iraq so I doubt that is a typo.

Even single 155m round even when used as IED demolishes MBT, M1, T-72 and T-90 alike. Must be one superb hummer.

The US Army has tried multiple anti-IED devices, such as jamming radio waves sent to the IED to make it explode, but you must remember that the designers are not exactly rag-tag fighters. These terrorists are smart, well educated guys. They probably went to a prestigeous university, fell for al Qaeda's bull**** propoganda, got degrees in either chemistry, eletrical engineering, or physics and are now slaughtering people for "Allah's will."

What, you guys didn;t see the buried M109 howitzer that fired the shells at the humvee? C'mon... you're going blind!
