This thread reminds me of the unit which I did my national service in, which had its origins in a bicycle recce-squadron established shortly after WW-2.
With the establishment of the Northern Norway brigade during the mid 50's it was decided that the bicycle unit in question should move from it's original location in Southern Norway to its new location up north on its bikes.
Halfway along in the town of Trondheim the unit was to drive past an inspecting high ranking general (military district CO or something like that) on the main square of the town, in parade fashion closed ranks and saluting the general.
As the men of the unit then took their right hand of the handlebar to salute the general, the front wheel of one of the bikes in the front rank of the formation got stuck in a tram-track in the road. With the result that the rider of that bike fell over in such a way he took with him the bikes of the rest of the unit in the fall domino fashion. rofl

Since then it has been it has been custom in the Norwegian army not to salute to officers or NCOs riding bikes with anything but a nod, and for them to return the salute likewise only with a nod. rofl

As I've understood it, the Finnish defence forces still use the bicycle as a standard "go around"-vehicle for the infantry on long marches and all that.

It's a handy way to move around, for the armies that can't afford large numbers of Bradley IFV's or BMP-3's even that the method of moving around might be a bit outdated.

Heh heh, how would a company of US troops moving with bicycles out in Iraq look like?
