I think this may be a SAUER M38H, but the picture in Janes does not have a safety switch on the left side. I found another picture online and it is the same, except for the writing on the left side of the slide. Were there copies made of the SAUER M38H pistol by combloc countries or is there a good chance this is the real deal???
There are a few identifying marks, it has a few(what looks like) the German Eagle with wings spread with what looks like a #37 underneath. There seems to be 3 of these on the pistol, one on the left side of the frame just in front on the trigger, one on the right side frame at the back of the grips below the serial# and one on the right side of the slide just above the serial# infront of the serations. Also when I stripped it down I found a 272 on the frame under the slide. It says CAL. 7.65 on the left side of the slide.
Hopefully this makes sense.

I'm pretty sure the grips on this one are after market junk grips. I may try and take better pictures at lunch.

Sorry about the last two pictures for some reason I couldn't get a good close up picture.

Pics I found online,

Surely if it is a Sauer, the calibre should be 7.65 and not 7.62! It certainly looks like a Sauer - but this type of pistol was often copied - I saw a very nice Walther PPK in 7.65mm some years back - it had all of the correct marks but had come from the Darra Bazar! It is only a possibility, but all sorts of pistols were turned out on the NW Frontier before the Afghan conflicts kept them busy.

My bad, you are very correct on the caliber, thinking about 7.62X25. The thing that has thrown me off is the markings, similar to the ones you often find on the P38.

I haven't seen too many sources about Sauer 38's being copied Post World War II (Not to say it couldn't happen)...

A weathered and beaten Model 38H close up for you is below if it helps any:

I am wondering if it is a model made near the end of the war. It has a protuding flange at the magazine well that I have not seen so exposed on similiar models. The below picture is of a known late model production specimen which has little in the way of markings and no safety lever so you can get some variations.

I found out over the weekend, that the number under the eagle was the number of the plant that produced the firearm, if this is the case, is there anyway to track down which plant #37 would have been in Germany?
