Right this is one for the Diggers out there.

Why was it that only 68 members of the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam (AATTV) (http://www.aattv.iinet.net.au/) were awarded the General Service Medal with South Vietnam clasp (http://www.vvaa.org.au/med-gsm.htm)? I understand that the Vietnam Medal (http://www.vvaa.org.au/med-viet.htm)came along in 1964 but surely there were more than just 68 troops in Vietnam before then that qualified for it (i.e. were in country for a period of 30 days or more etc)? My history of Aus/NZ troops in Vietnam is a bit sketchy at best ........ could anyone enlighten me ......? :|

Our main effort didn't start untill June 65, prior to that we were primarily involved in the Emergency and Confrontation, those conflicts being the driving force in increasing the size of the Royal Australian Regiment from 4 to 9 Battalions. The team didn't grow untill the same stage, mid 65.

Ah, cheers for that. I was always under the impression there were alot more troops in there before 65 ..... but obviously not!
